Background / History
Yan Shaozhe brought Jiang Chen and Ma Xiaotao together after recognizing Jiang Chen’s Ice Phoenix bloodline. He hoped a Second Awakening would give Jiang Chen Ultimate Ice and enable him to cure Xiaotao’s Evil Fire. When Jiang Chen could not stabilize his bloodline, Yan urged Xiaotao to break up with him. Mu En condemned the decision as shortsighted and made Yan answer for it 1 2.
Jiang Chen awakened his Ice Phoenix Martial Soul and gained Ultimate Ice shortly afterward. Reprimanded by Mu En and the Sea God Pavilion Elders, Yan agreed to apologize in person. He admitted responsibility and offered compensation—including a hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring and Soul Bone—if Jiang Chen would reconcile with Xiaotao. Jiang Chen refused and warned that further pressure could drive him from Shrek 4 5 6 7.
Yan continued to look for a way to help Xiaotao, but she did not apologize to Jiang Chen during the Far North expedition. After Jiang Chen received the Ice Empress’s Sacrifice, Yan pressed her again to make amends. She refused, accusing him of putting the academy’s expectations ahead of her feelings 7 11 12.
Appearance
Yan has a thin face with hollow cheeks. He is also shown transforming into a dazzling Bright Phoenix 6 12.
Personality
Yan is willing to direct his disciple’s personal life when he believes her future and Shrek’s interests are at stake. He initially judges Jiang Chen by his inability to attain Ultimate Ice, then regrets that judgment once Jiang Chen awakens. Although he accepts blame and apologizes, his attempt to secure a reconciliation remains tied to curing Xiaotao’s Evil Fire 1 5 6 7.
He is protective of talent in the Martial Soul Department. During the Freshman Assessment, he disputes Xian Lin’er’s attempt to recruit Jiang Chen and later refuses to hand over Huo Yuhao despite an earlier promise 16 17 23.
