Ch. 21The Angler's Ultimate Trial

Chapter summary

  • On Sea God Island, Dai Mubai, Zhu Zhuqing, Oscar, Ning Rongrong, Ma Hongjun, and Lin Yuan undergo the Sacred Pillar’s assessment. The others receive Black-level trials, while Ning Rongrong is awarded the rare Top-Tier Seven Trials. Lin Yuan’s test produces a previously unheard-of variant: the Sea God Nine Trials—Fishing Assessment, which could make him eligible to inherit a variant of the Sea God’s godhood.
  • For the First Trial, Lin Yuan is meant to climb 333 steps under the pressure of the Sea God’s Light. Instead, he uses his fishing rod to pull the light off each step, turning it into Light Pearls and absorbing them. After three days, he completes the trial and gains five Soul Power levels.
  • For the Second Trial, he must cross the Ring Sea and face Xiao Bai, the Demon Soul Great White Shark King. Rather than fight, Lin Yuan baits the sea creatures with powder from a rare beast’s core. Its aura draws their attention, while the bait wins their cooperation. Xiao Bai lets him pass, and the trial raises him to level 60.
  • During the Third Trial, Lin Yuan withstands the tides while fishing and catches hundreds of Sea Soul Beasts. He releases nearly all of them, keeping only two for food. A year later, he completes the trial at level 65. He explains that sparing the fish preserves them for future catches.
  • The Fourth Trial requires him to ensure Xiao Bai survives a coming Shark-Whale Battle. The system warns that Spirit Hall, led by Bibi Dong, has learned of Sea God Island and may be seeking the Sea God’s power. A black sail appears on the horizon, suggesting danger is approaching.

Character development and interactions

Lin Yuan consistently turns trials built around force or endurance into fishing challenges. His ingenuity, patience, and refusal to waste life astonish Sea Horse Douluo, who gradually recognizes that Lin Yuan is unlike other aspirants: he seems to value fishing as much as—or more than—power. Lin Yuan’s principle of releasing his catch also reveals a practical respect for balance and sustainability.
Xiao Bai shifts from challenging Lin Yuan to accepting his approach, even joking that his bait is too spicy. Sea Horse Douluo moves from disbelief to wary admiration. Lin Yuan’s attitude changes at the end when the threat to Xiao Bai becomes real: he grips his rod and focuses on Bibi Dong’s impending arrival.

Significant themes

  • Ingenuity over brute force: Lin Yuan reinterprets each trial through fishing rather than fighting.
  • Stewardship and restraint: Releasing most of his catch reflects the idea that taking less preserves future abundance.
  • Power and purpose: While others seek strength or godhood, Lin Yuan appears motivated primarily by the chance to fish.
  • An approaching conflict: The arrival of Spirit Hall threatens both Xiao Bai and Lin Yuan’s unusual path through the trials.

Ch. 22The Asura Field

Plot points and events

  • Xiao Ruoxue and Shui Bing’er track Lin Yuan to Sea God Island after hearing he had gone there. They bring fish to help restore him, but he releases them and gives the women Sea-Blue Beads instead.
  • Hu Liena arrives with paperwork for Lin Yuan’s Third Trial. Her presence sparks immediate jealousy and suspicion among the three women, while Ma Hongjun, Oscar, and Ning Rongrong watch the confrontation as entertainment.
  • That night, three Spirit Hall warships approach Sea God Island. Lin Yuan uses his Fishing Rod to disable two ships and summon more than 300 Sea Soul Beasts, which overwhelm the fleet. Xiao Bai defeats one Soul Douluo, while another is captured by a sea snake.
  • Hu Liena, who says she is acting for herself rather than either side, abandons her Spirit Hall Saintess Token and leaves, warning that Lin Yuan’s actions amount to declaring war. Lin Yuan says Spirit Hall attacked first and vows to defend Xiao Bai against future threats.
  • The system updates the women’s relationship statuses. Lin Yuan jokes that he is cultivating a “fishing spot,” though Xiao Ruoxue and Shui Bing’er are unsettled to learn he had also given Hu Liena a bead.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lin Yuan remains calm and playful amid both romantic tension and battle. He protects Sea God Island through ingenuity rather than direct combat, and treats the summoned Sea Beasts as friends.
  • Xiao Ruoxue and Shui Bing’er reunite with Lin Yuan and show concern for him. Their rivalry with Hu Liena is overt, but they stand together after her departure. Their reaction to his bead for Hu Liena hints at growing jealousy.
  • Hu Liena shifts from Spirit Hall messenger to an independent figure: she refuses to claim either side, then discards her token after Lin Yuan defeats the fleet. Her decision suggests a serious break with her faction, though she leaves visibly conflicted.
  • Zhu Zhuqing avoids the beach confrontation but later joins the island’s defenders, quietly demonstrating her loyalty.
  • Sea Horse Douluo and the others prepare to defend the island, while the observers turn the romantic standoff into a spectacle. Xiao Bai, meanwhile, recognizes the danger posed by Spirit Hall and jokes that Lin Yuan may eventually be overwhelmed by the women around him.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty and independence: Hu Liena’s choice to discard her token, and Lin Yuan’s defense of the island, challenge factional allegiance.
  • Protection and consequences: Lin Yuan’s victory secures the island for now but risks provoking a larger war with Spirit Hall.
  • Romantic rivalry and restraint: The women compete for Lin Yuan’s attention, while his fishing metaphors frame attraction as something that cannot be forced.
  • Humor alongside danger: The chapter balances a jealous standoff and comic commentary with a major military threat and the promise of future conflict.
