Ch. 508Negotiation

Ligo and Silei investigated the strange attention surrounding Silei at the banquet, then learned that her lapel pin marked her as a guardian. Meanwhile, Hesta refused to sign Pujina’s documents but agreed not to reveal what she learned before being allowed to visit Rob Green.

  • Ligo restrained a man who tried to touch her hair, and Silei made him apologize.
  • Silei suggested Ligo wear the earrings so they could discover their meaning, and Ligo agreed.
  • A young man identified his lapel pin as a guardian lapel pin and offered to show Silei around; Silei accepted after Ligo urged her to go.
  • Pujina offered Hesta permission to visit Mr. Robogriye in exchange for signing documents, but Hesta refused.
  • Hesta agreed that she would not be the source if her conversation with Rob Green was leaked, and Pujina let her proceed.

Ch. 509Bringing It Up Again

Hesta was taken to Rob Green’s room and learned that he had obtained a special Ship Card to find refuge from the ship’s dangers. She asked him to continue the story about Yarek and Dech that he had begun beneath the sea.

  • Hesta told Pujina she had guessed Rob Green came to the self-service station for a special Ship Card, and accused her of choosing victims to kill regardless of the rules.
  • Pujina brought blindfolded Hesta to Rob Green’s room, where Rob objected to her staying but let her in after Pujina invoked the Occupancy Agreement.
  • Hesta removed her blindfold and told Rob that Miss Chiba had sent her because the room was safe.
  • Rob checked Hesta’s Ship Card and questioned her about her connection to the Quicksilver Needle who guarded her.
  • Hesta recalled meeting Rob in the exhibition hall and asked him to finish what he had begun saying about Yarek and Dech beneath the sea.

Ch. 510Winning Trust

Hesta challenged Rob Green’s interpretation of Robogriye’s ideas and explained how patriarchal thinkers had altered the myth of Alecto into the story of Yarek. The conversation left Rob eager to preserve Hesta’s confidence, though she was disappointed that he supported compromise rather than strict separatism.

  • Rob questioned why Hesta had raised the topic, then tried to end the discussion and go to sleep.
  • Hesta explained that the transformation of Alecto into Yarek reflected a longstanding effort to erase women’s achievements and sever their inheritance.
  • Rob recognized Hesta’s knowledge of Robogriye’s history and admitted he had judged her too hastily.
  • Hesta criticized Rob’s group for including women and rejected being associated with other women, saying she wanted to live as a real person.
  • Rob argued that separatism needed to adapt to the present, but Hesta called him a believer in compromise and said she had hoped he could guide her.
  • Hesta asked Rob to keep their conversation secret, and Rob assured her he considered them fellow travelers and respected radical practitioners.

Ch. 511Meaning

Rob told Hesta that she would have to undergo a trial before she could meet the person who truly built Eden. At a dinner party, Silei and Ligo discovered that their jewelry granted them strange powers over consent.

  • Hesta questioned whether someone else was behind Rob, and Rob admitted that she would need to pass a trial to meet that person.
  • A young man called Ligo led Silei and Ligo to the dinner party and explained that it was the first gathering held aboard the ship.
  • The young man told Silei that, as a guest, she could do whatever she wanted and that no one could refuse her that night.
  • An old man grabbed at Ligo, and Ligo threw him to the floor before the young man rebuked him for mistreating Silei's companion.
  • Silei guessed that Ligo's earrings meant she could not refuse anyone that night.

Ch. 512Majority

Silei and Ligo sought out party organizer Mr. Robogriye while Hesta questioned Rob about the Egalitarianism’s trials and its ideals. Hesta learned that the trial could only be arranged in Core City, and Silei noticed an intimate photograph that seemed out of place in a Thorn Monks gathering.

  • Silei remembered her first conversation with Anna, praised Ligo’s outlook, and asked to meet party organizer Mr. Robogriye.
  • Hesta challenged Rob’s account of the trial, and Rob explained that it tested people according to their individual limits and was only available in Core City.
  • Rob argued that Mr. Robogriye’s effort to erase women ignored human instincts and the beliefs of the majority, while Hesta invited him to continue.
  • Silei and Ligo climbed the stairs with their guide, and Silei questioned why a photograph of two men clasping hands was displayed in a place associated with the Thorn Monks.

Ch. 513Youth

Silei and Ligo heard a young man explain Robogriye’s “Youthful Love” as a way for men to escape the matriarchal order. Elsewhere, Rob argued to Hesta that Robogriye’s ideal was too extreme and that society needed a compromise that tolerated women only as a defect.

  • A young man told Silei and Ligo that Robogriye’s “Youthful Love” transcended reproduction and offered men a path to freedom from the matriarchal world.
  • Silei questioned whether the group treated sexual orientation as a political tool and asked why the banquet had so many women accompanying men.
  • The young man said changing an ideology took time and left Silei’s question about the voyage unanswered.
  • Rob told Hesta that Robogriye’s persistence had brought controversy and that some men were better off remaining providers than joining the movement.
  • Rob said he wanted to reconcile the transcendent with the mundane and described tolerating women as a defect while refusing to accept their demands for equality.

Ch. 514Consciousness Transfer

Rob explained his vision for Eden and asked Hesta, a genuine Quicksilver Needle, to share what she knew. Meanwhile, Silei and Ligo entered Robogriye’s empty lounge, where technical documents revealed ambitious Golden Age plans for Consciousness Transfer and prosthetic-body travel.

  • Rob told Hesta that Eden reflected his ideal society and explained why he needed genuine Quicksilver Needles; Hesta agreed to answer his questions.
  • A young man escorting Silei described the new order as offering a choice between an ordinary life and a great one, leaving Silei uneasy about its fanaticism.
  • Silei and Ligo reached Robogriye’s lounge and found it empty, with a painting Silei recognized from the From the Deep Forest exhibition.
  • Silei discovered engineering documents about Ceres relay stations, Mars energy development, and using Consciousness Transfer with prosthetic bodies for rapid long-distance travel.
  • Ligo explained that Consciousness Transfer could send a person’s consciousness as electronic signals to a prosthetic body at another destination, potentially reducing a journey from Earth to Mars to twenty minutes.

Ch. 515Breakout

Silei and Ligo discussed Ligo’s friend Lieutenant Dona and the burden of protecting others. Their conversation was interrupted when a strange substance and chlorine gas overtook the corridor, forcing them to escape through the ship’s outer wall.

  • Ligo told Silei that her friend had died rescuing hostages after taking on too many responsibilities, and Silei realized she meant Lieutenant Dona.
  • Silei said she had visited Dona’s grave and defended her bravery, while Ligo asked her to imagine how her death would affect those left behind.
  • A white gelatinous substance spread through the room and corridor, and yellow-green gas began seeping from the ventilation ducts.
  • Ligo carried Silei through the corridor and smashed through the wall as the deadly gas filled the passage.
  • Silei jumped through the opening onto the ship’s exterior, and Ligo caught her before she fell and carried her down through the air.

Ch. 516The Party Breaks Up

Silei and Ligo investigated the ship’s self-repairing hull and returned to Level -2 to track the strange elevators and find out where the banquet guests had gone. Meanwhile, Pujina took Hesta away from Rob, and the chapter left Silei and Ligo watching the elevators shuttle between Level -2 and the sixth floor.

  • Silei and Ligo saw the breach between the sixth and seventh decks repair itself, then Silei headed for Level -2.
  • Rob put Hesta in his room for the night, but when the lights went out, Hesta disappeared and Rob called for her in the darkness.
  • Pujina told Hesta that the elevator was occupied and warned her to stay with them until the situation settled down.
  • Silei and Ligo rode to Level -2 and returned to what they thought was the sixth floor, but found an empty corridor with the wrong carpet and a window that opened onto nothing.
  • Silei and Ligo watched two elevators travel between Level -2 and six, then found that their own elevator would not move as the others continued shuttling.

Ch. 517Pseudo-Humans

Ligo and Silei fought attackers on the Third Deck who appeared to be guests but had mechanical bodies and abnormal strength. As Silei rushed to rescue victims, Ligo discovered that destroying the attackers’ eyes killed them, leaving her questioning whether they were Chelated Beings.

  • Ligo and Silei heard gunfire on the Third Deck, and Ligo shielded Silei from bullets before entering the corridor alone.
  • Silei found a severed limb made of electronic components and metal, then shot an attacker who was assaulting a victim, but the victim died from his injuries.
  • Ligo fought several formalwear-clad attackers and urged Silei to leave, but Silei rushed into another room after hearing cries for help.
  • Ligo noticed that an attacker died after his eyes were destroyed, tested the discovery on another attacker, and called out to Silei when gunshots sounded nearby.

Ch. 518Smuggling

Hesta was escorted away after questioning Pujina about her conversation with Rob Green, while Ligo and Silei dealt with the aftermath of the Night Banquet attack. The supposed rescue crew vanished with the wounded and the mechanical wreckage, leaving Ligo and Silei to realize they had been deceived.

  • Hesta denied Pujina's questions about her conversation with Rob Green and told her to ask Albodoronica instead.
  • Silei shot several formally dressed attackers and checked on the injured as Ligo surveyed the bloodshed on the third level.
  • Bernhard found his adjutant among the wounded and, after learning Ligo had confronted the attackers, ran to question Silei.
  • Ligo noticed the mechanical wreckage was gone and discovered that the crewmen carrying off bodies had disappeared.
  • Ligo and Silei realized the supposed rescue team had likely worked with the attackers and might have taken the injured away.

Ch. 519Honey Jar

At the Hard Rock Bar, Anna and Pujina questioned Hesta about her suspicions that Rob would die before they disembarked, then Anna teased her about her fortunate life. While examining items left by guests at a banquet, Hesta found a bawdy wooden puzzle, and Anna recommended a book about the people who made it.

  • Pujina asked Hesta whether she believed Rob would die before disembarkation, and Hesta explained that a death threat in The Egalitarianism had led her to suspect it.
  • Anna called Hesta someone who had grown up in a honey jar, listing her good pay, prestige, comrades, support, and trustworthy mentor.
  • Hesta noticed unfamiliar items hanging in the bar and learned from Pujina that banquet guests had left them behind.
  • Anna asked Pujina to bring over the lost-and-found items, and Hesta solved a wooden puzzle to reveal suggestive carvings inside.
  • Anna urged Hesta to read Male Awakening to better understand the guests and their philosophical ideas about penetrative acts.

Ch. 520The Beginning of the Journey

Anna, Pujina, and Hesta discussed conquest, stories, and alcohol at the bar. As Hesta prepared to leave, she drank a glass of tequila and privately asked Anna how old she was and when she was born.

  • Anna explained to Hesta how penetration and conquest figured in the Ascetic Monks’ culture.
  • Pujina discussed her writing and asked what might be the starting point for a woman conquering everything; Hesta answered, “Endless... parting.”
  • Anna warned Pujina about alcohol’s harms and described how it weakened rational restraint.
  • Hesta drank a glass of tequila, approached Anna, and asked her age and birth date.

Ch. 521Friends for a Moment

Hesta drank with Anna, who said they could be friends for a moment, while Silei and Ligo returned to find Hesta unconscious and later heard what she had learned. Hesta revealed that Anna was Albodoronica and suggested the ship’s passengers and crew might be connected to long-distance travel and Eden’s hidden creator.

  • Anna agreed to be friends with Hesta for the duration of their drinking, and Hesta later vomited in the bathroom with Silei.
  • Silei recounted the night’s events to Hesta and said the killings seemed like a terrorist act targeting people with dissenting views.
  • Hesta told Silei that Anna was Albodoronica and had committed the Golden Age cruise-ship massacre as well as the current crimes.
  • Hesta said Anna claimed to come from the Golden Age and that Robogriye, also known as Rob Green, had described an important figure behind Eden.
  • Ligo connected the ship’s veterans to a document about ultra-long-distance travel and said some Core Cities could replicate human bodies.
  • Hesta reassured Ligo and Silei that the ship was now genuinely safe for them.

Ch. 522The Reason

Hesta and Ligo discussed the dangers of the third-deck attack and the suspicious Sapphire Earrings, then Hesta arrived at the morning gathering to question what had happened. She warned that attending discussions about the Bylaws could count as accepting them, while a passenger who had not read them condemned the group and left the danger unresolved.

  • Ligo warned Hesta that the third-deck attackers were nearly as dangerous as Chelated Beings and said she had to return to Chiba's room for seven hours.
  • Silei and Hesta found the passenger elevators sealed off on their way to the Bishop Restaurant, where Ligo had not yet arrived.
  • Bernhard arrived furious and questioned a young man who had ridden the elevator during the attack; the man said the monsters had ignored him.
  • Hesta asked the gathering whether they had read the Bylaws and warned that listening to more than three rules could mean accepting the entire framework.
  • Fionn defended attending the discussion, but the young man said the others would be the next to die.

Ch. 523Cause of Death

After nineteen men from Bernhard’s unit vanished in a deadly attack, Hesta and Silei questioned him about the deaths and linked them to a violated rule about elevators stopping on Floor -2. Silei asked the group to consider why the rule existed.

  • Tasia reminded the departing men that they might have heard the Detailed Rules, prompting Fionn and others to go read them at Grace Theater.
  • Hesta questioned Bernhard about the nineteen casualties, and Silei explained that the male victims had been stabbed through the abdomen with sharp objects.
  • Bernhard’s adjutant identified the missing men as former Armed SS members, and Bernhard accused someone of targeting his unit.
  • Hesta pointed out that the men had violated Rule Eleven, which warned people to avoid elevators stopped on Floor -2.
  • Silei approached the whiteboard and asked whether the group now understood why the elevator rule existed.

Ch. 524Provocation

Silei and Ligo explained the dangers and rules of the Night Banquet, including the deadly Sapphire Earring and the protection offered by the Scepter Brooch. Helen received an invitation for that night and demanded the brooch, while Hesta accused her of wanting to attend alone.

  • Silei explained that dangerous guests could enter a deck if someone summoned an elevator transporting them from Level -2.
  • Hesta stopped Adams and Fionn from retrieving the passengers and asked Silei to describe the Night Banquet.
  • Silei warned that guests had to choose the Scepter Brooch rather than the Sapphire Earring, and Ligo arrived with injuries and recounted their near-death experience.
  • Ligo said the brooch had protected Silei from the monsters and that she had used Gustav's earring to attend the banquet.
  • Helen showed her invitation, received Silei's brooch, and asked whether a Quicksilver Needle would accompany her.
  • After Helen challenged Ligo's willingness to protect passengers, Hesta accused her of wanting to attend the banquet alone.

Ch. 525Intent

After Helen challenged Hesta’s plan, Hesta warned the passengers that she would withdraw support from anyone who refused to cooperate. Later, Hesta’s companions learned her hand was trembling and discussed how the ship’s deaths and Robogriye’s theories of rule through fear might connect to what could happen when they reached shore.

  • Hesta told the passengers that future challenges would count as active refusal and result in the person receiving no protection or information.
  • Helen apologized to Ligo, and the morning meeting ended with the passengers leaving by the stairs.
  • Hesta, Ligo, and Silei decided to visit the infirmary to question survivors, and Ligo discovered Hesta’s left hand was trembling.
  • Hesta explained that Anna had recommended Male Awakening, whose author Robogriye had supported using terrorist attacks to create fear and establish order.
  • Ligo asked whether the deaths aboard the ship counted as mass death, and Hesta said the situation might change when the ship reached shore.

Ch. 526Registration Point

Hesta, Ligo, and Silei investigated the ship’s rules and searched the infirmary for clues about Robogriye and the deaths aboard. They found a temporary registration form listing Risk Passengers, Ship Card numbers, and guardians, and Hesta realized Helen had registered as a guardian.

  • Silei reported that Mantel had visited the infirmary for painkillers and that her name appeared on the form.
  • Hesta, Ligo, and Silei discussed how everyone aboard the ship was subject to its rules and went to the infirmary to question the wounded.
  • Ligo noticed that the infirmary resembled Robogriye’s study and opened a locked drawer beneath the nurse’s desk.
  • Ligo found a clipboard labeled “Medical Station Temporary Registration Point,” with columns for Risk Passenger, Ship Card number, and Guardian.
  • A man rushed in carrying a gravely wounded passenger who had apparently shot himself, so Hesta and Ligo stepped into the corridor.
  • Hesta realized that Helen had registered as a guardian at the infirmary.

Ch. 527Guardianship

Ligo and Hesta discovered that guardians could access a separate Safety Edition of the Detailed Rules, so they arranged to register Hesta as a Risk Passenger under Silei. After learning guardianship would prevent Hesta from serving as an Adjudicator for the rest of the voyage, Hesta registered Jivi as her ward instead and received the rulebook.

  • Ligo and Hesta concluded that Helen had used a guardian registration point to test the rules on passengers whose names had not yet appeared on the guardian list.
  • Ligo brought Hesta to the infirmary office, where the nurse explained how guardian registration worked, and Hesta asked Silei to become her guardian.
  • The nurse warned that guardianship would make Hesta unable to fulfill her Adjudicator duties for the rest of the voyage, and Hesta chose not to register under Silei.
  • The nurse rejected Rene's Ship Card as invalid and snapped it in half, so Hesta used Jivi's Ship Card to register him as her Risk Passenger.
  • Hesta completed the registration and received the Detailed Rules Safety Edition from the nurse.
