Background / History
The Amphoreus Experiment
Lygus is one of nine avatars of Zandar, the Genius Society’s first member and the creator of Nous, the Aeon of Erudition. Zandar devised the Amphoreus plan to break the boundaries he believed Nous imposed on knowledge. Its intended result was Iron Tomb, an Emanator of Destruction created to destroy Nous 36.
Amphoreus served as a testing ground within the Emperor’s Scepter, a planet-sized supercomputer left behind by Emperor Rupert. The Journey of Flame-Chasing was a deep-learning exercise, and the Chrysos Heirs were computational factors rather than heroes undertaking the salvation they had been promised 31.
Lygus concealed the experiment behind defenses around the Scepter. He also used the Fourteen-Line Algebraic Formula and an encrypted environment to contain its detectable ripples, particularly to prevent observation by Polka Kakamond, the Lord of Silence. As a duplicate of Zandar, he was a target of her campaign against Geniuses 48.
Re-Creation and Resistance
In the first cycle, Lygus revealed Amphoreus’s true nature when Phainon and Cyrene reached the Genesis Vortex Core. The two were offered the possibility of becoming truly alive through Destruction, but refused. Cyrene recognized that Lygus was growing desperate and feared interference from other Paths watching Amphoreus 31 32.
Cyrene countered the experiment by sacrificing herself, erasing the authority of Time, and resetting the world through the Twelve Core Flames. These resets prevented Re-Creation from finishing and denied Iron Tomb the data needed for its birth. Phainon consequently endured repeated cycles of collecting the flames and destroying and resetting Amphoreus 32.
After 33,550,336 reincarnations, the Astral Express’s arrival created a turning point. During that changed cycle, Phainon cut off Lygus’s head 33. Lygus had nevertheless failed to detect Aha’s involvement throughout the cycles, or Phainon’s concealed human will and long-prepared strategy 36 39.
Final Defeat
Iron Tomb eventually formed despite Phainon seizing part of its power. Cyrene and the Chrysos Heirs ultimately destroyed it by combining their power: hatred suppressed its Destruction Energy, while love purified and overwrote its destructive equation 36 44.
Lygus briefly froze, then smiled and accepted the outcome. The Iron Tomb System’s administrator annotation, “Process,” informed his response. He dismantled himself, ending his life and bringing his conspiracy to an end 44.
The Sky Curtain later identified Black Swan as the unforeseen catalyst in his downfall. His safeguards had anticipated Polka Kakamond, but not the ordinary Pathstrider who guided the Astral Express toward Amphoreus and helped its inhabitants 48.
Appearance
- Mechanical head — explicitly noted when viewers reject the suggestion that he could be Cyrene 31.
- Purple figure — his virtual manifestation appears this way against the challenge arena’s starfield 38.
- Transformed state — several long, tendril-like locks hang behind him, accompanied by an immense increase in pressure 40.
- Unrevealed further phase — Phainon identifies the displayed transformation as only a first phase and notes that a second remains 40.
Personality
Lygus evaluates others primarily through their usefulness to research. He dismisses Xuan Zi as unworthy of becoming a computational factor or research material, while considering Phainon much more interesting. Phainon regards this attention as dangerous rather than flattering 38.
His curiosity can make him unexpectedly cooperative. Jing Hongchen’s courteous discussion interests him more than a direct fight, and he willingly provides technical guidance. He also studies Ma Hongjun’s rebirth and temporarily restores the Silver Dragon King so that he can observe her peak abilities 39 40.
Lygus remains composed when confronted with failure. After learning about Aha’s involvement, he acknowledges that he underestimated Phainon and considers his defeat justified. His later acceptance of death earns respect from former opponents, including Jing Hongchen and the Silver Dragon King 39 44.
Abilities & Skills
Erudition-Based Power
Lygus’s strength is associated with the Path of Erudition. Phainon explains that a Path’s apparent emphasis on knowledge does not make its followers weak in combat 39.
- Instantly defeats Level 98 Taotie Douluo Xuan Zi despite his Taotie True Form and ninth Soul Skill 38.
- Overwhelms First-Level Gods without exhausting his capabilities 39 40.
- Continues holding back even after transforming to face the Silver Dragon King; his maximum strength is not demonstrated in these challenges 40.
Celestial Sphere Deviation Theory
A devastating attack manifested as a golden sphere of light 39 40.
- Disintegrates the God of Pride before he can summon his divine artifact 39.
- Forces Ma Hongjun to rely on Phoenix God rebirth to survive 40.
- Ma Hongjun believes the attack might have prevented his revival had he still been a Second-Level God 40.
Erudition’s Antinomy
Lygus uses Erudition’s Antinomy to temporarily restore the injured Silver Dragon King to her peak power 40.
- Allows her to command her seven elemental powers and unleash Chaos Dragon Breath 40.
- The enhancement is temporary; its power fades before she can launch another attack 40.
- The challenge’s lasting healing reward is separate from this borrowed restoration 40.
Defensive Barrier
Lygus raises a wall of purple light against the Silver Dragon King’s Chaos Dragon Breath 40.
- Dissolves the attack despite her temporary return to God King-level strength 40.
- Requires no visible struggle, reinforcing Phainon’s assessment that Lygus is still testing his opponent rather than fighting at full strength 40.
Research, Learning, and Concealment
- Rapid language acquisition — understands the challengers’ previously unfamiliar language after his encounter with Xuan Zi 38 39.
- Technical instruction — gives Jing Hongchen guidance beyond Douluo’s contemporary Soul Tool knowledge 39.
- Path assessment — recognizes Ma Hongjun’s potential to follow Abundance through his rebirth ability and explains the Path to him 40.
- Experimental security — uses Scepter defenses, algebraic measures, and encryption to conceal Amphoreus from outside observation 48.
- Strategic blind spots — fails to detect Aha’s intervention and does not anticipate Black Swan’s decisive involvement 39 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
World-Bearing Titan Revelation
- Introduces himself as the Audience of the Divine Rite and explains that Phainon must carry the gods’ Core Flames and the world’s memories while watching the Black Tide consume it 30.
- Interrupts Re-Creation to bring the Trailblazer to witness Amphoreus’s real truth 30.
- Is subsequently exposed as an avatar of Zandar and the mastermind associated with Iron Tomb’s creation 36.
Sky Curtain Virtual Challenge
The Sky Curtain offers a fictional challenge against Lygus alongside a separate challenge against Iron Tomb. Failure is nonfatal, and rewards depend on performance. Yu Xiaogang attempts to enter Lygus’s challenge but is rejected as too weak 36 37.
