Background / History
Before becoming Pope, Qian Daoliu traveled the continent and studied the two great empires. He concluded that founding a nation would entangle Spirit Hall in noble factions, class interests, economic holdings, and political institutions—the same constraints that Soul Masters sought to escape by joining it. Although Spirit Hall’s founders had intended to establish a nation, he abandoned that ambition at the height of its strength and imposed an iron rule that Spirit Hall would never become one 35.
Following Bo Saixi’s rejection, he returned to Spirit Hall and prepared to marry at his father’s urging. Ling Yuan confessed her love and offered to marry him, but he avoided acknowledging her feelings because he could not reciprocate them. He married another woman, who bore Qian Xunji; afterward, he barely spoke to his wife, and she eventually died of despair. He regarded the Angel God as his faith and Bo Saixi as the love of his life 113.
After leaving the papacy, he became Great Enshrined and took charge of the Offering Hall. Under Spirit Hall’s traditional division of authority, the Pope governs the Elder Council and ordinary affairs, while the Offering Hall operates separately under the Great Enshrined 24.
Personality
Qian Daoliu is an authoritative leader who combines overwhelming personal strength with political restraint. He rejects nation-building, warns against wars between the empires, and distinguishes an evil Martial Soul from criminal conduct. During the campaign against Evil Soul Masters, he explicitly orders that those who have committed no evil deeds be brought back for appropriate training rather than condemned 35 47.
His mentorship alternates between thoughtful instruction, teasing, and harsh physical discipline. He praises Huang Tieyi’s ingenuity and protects him in battle, but also beats him to settle their disputes. With Qian Xunji, he identifies complacency rather than incompetence as the problem, encouraging vigilance despite years of successful leadership 42 46 78 109.
His devotion to the Angel God can conflict with his protective duties. At Central Lake, he stops Huang Tieyi’s effective suppression of Demonic Qi because it is eroding the Angel Holy Sword and affecting the goddess. He then asks the exhausted Huang to continue guarding the site, prompting Mo Daolin to accuse him of transferring danger to a junior to protect divine interests 93.
