Background / History

Ancient Demonic Qi Calamity

According to Spirit Hall’s traditional history, Demonic Qi spread across Douluo Continent more than twenty thousand years earlier. Countless Soul Masters and Soul Beasts lost their minds and became walking corpses driven to slaughter. Qian Yuhan attained level one hundred, became the Angel God, destroyed the corrupted creatures, and sealed the Demonic Qi 23.

Zhong Hunmie disputes how Qian Yuhan achieved godhood, alleging that she sacrificed thousands of Qian Family members to obtain the necessary power. He nevertheless agrees that she sealed the Demonic Qi and saved the continent. Spirit Hall continues to regard guarding the Land of Chaos against escaping monsters as a practical duty 23.

Origin of the Central Lake Manifestation

Huang Tieyi initially suspects that Sunset Forest contains a second seal. Central Lake lies roughly 108,000 li from the Land of Chaos, with no surface waterways connecting them. He proposes that the Sea God may have sealed escaping Demonic Qi there before ascending ten thousand years earlier, but this explanation remains a theory 76 79.

The lake’s Demonic Qi differs from the mindless corruption described in historical records: it preserves enough of its victims’ intelligence to coordinate them and can form a speaking face. Huang identifies it as a detached fragment of divine thought. Qian Daoliu later confirms that another god left it behind, rather than it forming from the continent’s negative emotions 87 88 92 93.

Appearance

  • Dispersed form: Black vapor or a thick layer of black Qi beneath otherwise clear lake water 73 76.
  • Active contamination: Can spread through Central Lake until the water becomes black as ink 82.
  • Intelligent form: A face with blurred features, formed from churning Demonic Qi 87.
  • Visible host effects: Black fumes, pitch-black eyes, enlarged bodies, and increasingly savage auras 87 91 92.
  • Energy conduit: Produces a pitch-black chain that pierces the Short-Tailed Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey and channels additional Demonic Qi into it 82.

Personality

The Central Lake face is arrogant and contemptuous, initially claiming that Huang Tieyi is unworthy of seeing its remaining methods. It taunts him about an impending slaughter and becomes enraged when he eats and rests while steadily wearing it down 87 88.

Its behavior is also calculating and strongly self-preserving. It conceals corruption inside Soul Beasts, maintains a backup plan, and tries to outlast Huang’s Soul Power rather than confront him directly. When it suspects Huang’s identity, it refuses to name the being it fears and attempts to contact its true body. Under intensified sacred suppression, its defiance gives way to pleas for mercy 88 90 91 92.

Abilities & Skills

Corruption of Bodies and Minds

Demonic Qi erodes both humans and Soul Beasts, damaging their judgment and potentially reducing them to slaughter-driven puppets 23 81.

  • Gradually corrodes a host’s flesh, brain, body, and soul 81 86 88.
  • Makes affected Soul Beasts dull-witted before complete mental collapse 81.
  • Can coexist with Soul Beasts without immediately destroying their personalities, allowing coordinated behavior 87.
  • Can magnify powerful Soul Masters’ desires; Huang identifies corruption of the imperial family as a possible route to political turmoil and war 89.

Transmission Through Water and Flesh

Central Lake serves as the manifestation’s main means of spreading corruption 76 79.

  • Slowly infects Soul Beasts that drink contaminated water 79 81.
  • Remains dangerous inside the bodies of infected beasts 89.
  • Uses the consumption of corrupted Soul Beast meat to carry Demonic Qi into Heaven Dou City’s population 89 93.
  • Can remain dormant inside hosts, concealing an additional threat after the initial Beast Tide 91 92.

Artificial Strengthening

Demonic Qi can force Soul Beasts beyond their natural development, but the resulting power does not necessarily represent genuine maturation 73 82 102.

  • Enables some beasts to speak human language before reaching one hundred thousand years 82.
  • Enlarges hosts and floods them with additional power 81 82 87.
  • Artificially strengthens the Dragon-Patterned Demon Tiger into a false Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast 73 95 102.
  • Can taint Soul Rings and Soul Bones, making them unsuitable for some cultivators 76 102 111.

Distributed Will and Command

The intelligent manifestation’s thoughts and will can travel through its Demonic Qi, allowing it to direct infected creatures 89.

  • Organizes a Beast Tide intended to spread corruption and provoke conflict 88 89.
  • Commands the Azure-Winged Snake to attack Huang Tieyi 88.
  • Its screams under sacred suppression coincide with cries and black fumes from infected Soul Beasts throughout Sunset Forest 91.
  • Attempts to contact its main body through its connection to its source, but fails to establish contact during Huang’s interrogation 90 91.

Resistance and Divine Erosion

The Central Lake face can reform after being dispersed, but sustained sacred power steadily diminishes it 88.

  • Repeatedly reforms after strikes from the Angel Holy Sword 88.
  • Loses roughly one-tenth of its size during the first hour of continuous suppression 88.
  • Erodes the Angel Holy Sword in return; the effects reach the Angel God herself 93.
  • Has no direct attacking power or ability to escape in its lake-bound state, relying on corrupted servants and endurance instead 88.
