That Soul Master kept charging into the fray, and more Soul Masters joined him. There were not many, but for the moment, they plugged the gap left by the Clones.
Jiang Hao treasured his Clones. He had blamed himself ever since the first one was ambushed, and he had sent away every Clone that was injured. Those who remained were all unscathed.
Atop the tower, Eagle-Eye Bro's eyes filled with tears, the whites streaked with blood. "I can do without these eyes today!" He unleashed his Soul Skill once more.
"Fly! Falcon, take to the sky—Enemy Intelligence Sharing!"
The Soul Beasts appeared as red dots in the sight of every Soul Master taking part in the battle.
"That effect is incredible. I never thought they had someone like that among them."
The woman in black robes murmured to herself, then swung her sword twice more, slaying the Hundred-Year and Thousand-Year Soul Beasts that approached her. She led the charge into the heart of the battlefield.
"Swords, come—Phoenix Cry!"
A clear cry rang out. Several sword phantoms solidified in the air, crashed into the ground, and swept into the distance.
On the other side, a Fire Dragon breathed flames, holding the ground below the deep pit alongside Xiao Xiao's enormous Cauldron.
The Soul Beast corpses burned fiercely in the heat. Fat rendered from them, filling the air with a pungent stench.
"Going by the way beast tides work, there should be a leader. If we take it out, the tide might end." Owl Bro analyzed the beasts charging in, fixing his gaze on one after another, only to rule each one out.
"Not that one. It may have thirty thousand years of cultivation, but it isn't smart enough to command this many Soul Beasts.
"That one has strong enough Spiritual Power, but it's too weak to make the others obey.
"That one's too small to command a herd... No, there's no leader here at all. Their leader is still hiding in the forest!"
"Beans—take flight!"
Owl Bro's Owl flew from his shoulder and plunged into the forest. As Beans's vision entered both his and Jiang Hao's minds, they saw a dark-red spider crouched not far from the forest entrance, hissing without pause.
"That's it! Hawkeye, shut off all Enemy Intelligence Sharing and mark the Soul Beast that started the tide. We're carrying out a Decapitation Operation!" Owl Bro said.
Jiang Hao gripped his greatsword. "You? All we did was hunt a few Soul Beasts on your turf, and you unleashed a beast tide over it?"
As Jiang Hao assessed the beast, Owl Bro relayed what he had observed. "It's a Bloodthirsty Demon Spider, around thirty-five thousand years old. Watch its attacks. It spits corrosive liquid."
"Everyone! Who will join me in taking that thirty-thousand-year Soul Beast's head?" Jiang Hao shouted to the higher-ranking Soul Masters on the battlefield.
The first to answer was, as ever, the three-ring Soul Elder. "It's only a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast! Just watch—I'm terrifyingly strong today!"
The Soul Master, swollen as round as a pig, jiggled with every movement. Dozens of Boosts from different directions poured into him without pause, along with the occasional Healing System Soul Skill. He was having the time of his life.
"Let's go! I'm coming too!"
"Me too!"
The voices belonged to the six-ring wielder of the Fire Dragon Martial Soul and the five-ring wielder of the Short Sword Martial Soul.
"Form up around me when we get there. I'll kill it!" The middle-aged man with the Fire Dragon Martial Soul clenched his right fist. Wings spread behind him as he charged toward the forest, burning a trail through it for the others.
Jiang Hao followed close behind. He stowed his greatsword in his Soul Tool and quickened his pace.
As flames rose among the trees, the Bloodthirsty Demon Spider reacted. It had barely tried to flee when the Fire Dragon pinned it to the ground and hurled it out of the forest.
The moment Jiang Hao saw the spider fly out, his greatsword reappeared in his hand. He poured thirty percent of his Soul Power into it and hurled it forward. The blade whistled through the air, and he raced after it.
The blade struck the spider's hard shell and threw off sparks. Jiang Hao leaped up, caught the greatsword as its momentum died, and swung it down again, smashing the enormous spider into the dirt.
Sensing danger, the spider tried to rise, but a shout rang out behind Jiang Hao. "I'm here to help you, old villain! First Soul Skill: Red Light, Stop—No Entry!"
Not far behind Jiang Hao, Red Light Bro crawled over from beyond the defensive line, his face caked with dirt. He drove the sign in his hand into the ground. Red light spread three hundred meters ahead in a 120-degree arc. The spider he had targeted froze mid-rise. It could only wave its legs helplessly, unable to shift even an inch.
"Red Light, Stop—No Entry restrains every creature caught in the red light ahead and prevents them from moving for up to sixty seconds. The stronger they are, the faster they break free. If they do it within sixty seconds, their movement speed drops by thirty percent.
"Hit it, quick! I can't hold on much longer!"
Jiang Hao barely blocked the spider leg stabbing toward his chest and retreated. The three-ring Soul Elder took a great leap and landed backside-first on the spider. Two legs plunged into his fleshy body like venomous stingers. Fatty Liu cried out, sprang back up, and rolled away from it.
A sword flash followed, severing the Ten-Thousand-Year Bloodthirsty Demon Spider's two front legs. Flames swallowed its shrieks as the six-ring Fire Dragon Soul Master charged in again. Fire wreathed his fists. He smashed one into the spider's skull, then struck it again.
The spider's agonized shrieks rang across the camp. The Soul Beasts that had followed it into the attack seemed to sense something. Every Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast turned and rushed for the forest. Only the less intelligent Thousand-Year and Hundred-Year beasts kept battering the defensive line, and no more Soul Beasts emerged from the trees.
"Kill every Soul Beast still outside! Supply support effects without limit—don't let a single one escape!"
Owl Bro directed the Clones as they cleared the trenches. Most had only minor injuries and could handle Hundred-Year and Ten-Year Soul Beasts. They began sweeping the battlefield.
Jiang Hao dropped beside the burning pyre. The pitch-black Soul Ring floating above the spider, its burning body, and the stench rising from it began to fill the emptiness in his mind.
He could not help laughing through his tears. "Hmph. I'll remember this grudge!"
"Thank you all for stepping in to help. Every Soul Beast here has been slaughtered. We didn't let a single one get away."
The Clones began cleaning up the aftermath. Those Jiang Hao had summoned from the forest also made a show of leaving camp.
After all, more than two thousand Soul Master Clones appearing here would cause needless trouble sooner or later. Letting them scatter like the beast herd and go their separate ways was the best outcome.
Owl Bro laughed heartily, holding several wooden chests. "You all stepped up so generously. The Thirty-Person Group has little with which to thank you, but we've prepared a small gift. Please accept it."
He opened a chest packed with round Gold Soul Coins—ten or twenty thousand by a rough estimate—then pushed it toward the three people before him.
The woman with the Short Sword hesitated a moment, then accepted the chest. She took another, gave a polite salute, and said, "You must be the leader of the Thirty-Person Group. I'm Qingzhu. A pleasure to meet you."
Once she had accepted her chest of Gold Soul Coins, the aloof Fire Dragon Soul Master reached out for one as well. "I'd never heard of the Thirty-Person Group before. You've accomplished a great deal at such a young age. I am Nan Heng, a Consecrated Elder of the Earth Dragon Sect."
When a chest of Gold Soul Coins was pushed toward the panting three-ring fatty seated on the ground, he waved it away. "I don't need it. I'm an ordinary outer disciple of the Snow Demon Sect, and the young master of the Northern Snow Trading House. Just call me Fatty Liu."
