A bitter wind howled across the snowy plain.
Banner Bro and the others reached the edge of the Far North, nearly ten kilometers from Dragon City.
There was no sign of human habitation anywhere. Master's Bro carried a suitcase in one hand and a leather backpack on his back.
"Main Body Old Rogue went to buy a shop. This place is outside his jurisdiction, so it's perfect for experiments."
Master's Bro smiled. He knew Main Body Old Rogue might stop him and make him change his methods if some of his experiments proved too cruel.
As the group ventured deeper into the forest, the trees blocked the howling wind, and it began to die down.
They stood quietly in the treetops, watching the food laid out below.
A snow-white Soft Bone Rabbit emerged from a burrow in the snow.
Master's Bro had been studying Soft Bone Rabbits lately. He had discovered that in many regions, their fur color and body size changed with their environment.
The Soft Bone Rabbits of the Far North shared some traits with their close relatives, the Snow Velvet Rabbits. Their hearing was much worse, but they were faster.
The diversity of life. The theory of natural selection.
—Animals were forced to adapt to their environment. Only those that adapted could survive and pass on their traits, eventually becoming a population.
Beneath Master's Bro's half-damaged mask, his smile grew inscrutable. A syringe appeared in his hand.
"Swift Bro, sorry for the trouble, but could you catch all those rabbits?" Master's Bro waved a hand.
Swift Bro summoned his Martial Soul. A long whip lashed down, striking a Soft Bone Rabbit. It convulsed, then finally lay still.
"These should be enough experimental samples."
Beyond the hillside, a Forest Cabin had been hastily built in a valley gully.
To ward off the bitter cold, Fire Dragon Bro sat in the middle of the cabin, digging downward out of sheer boredom.
Nearby stood dozens of captured rabbit-like Soul Beasts: ordinary Soft Bone Rabbits caught in the Star Dou Great Forest, broad-eared Soft Bone Rabbits, high-jumping Soft Bone Rabbits, cold-resistant Soft Bone Rabbits from the Far North, and Snow Velvet Rabbits.
Those varieties were enough for Master's Bro's next experiment.
As Master's Bro worked, he drew drop after drop of pale pink medicine into a syringe, then injected it into each rabbit's ear canal.
Inside a cage that had been quiet, a male and female Soft Bone Rabbit began to swell and chase each other.
Seeing that the medicine had taken effect, Master's Bro randomly paired the remaining Soft Bone Rabbits, ensuring every combination had a control group.
Restless noises rose from several rabbit cages.
Fire Dragon Bro shook his head helplessly. "You really are a pervert! Some of them aren't even the same species, and you're still doing this."
Yet his hands kept digging.
After all, Master's Bro had promised that if he worked hard at digging, he would be transferred over to serve under him and help with his experiments.
He would be first to enjoy anything good that came of it. Those terms were far too tempting.
No wonder Main Body Old Rogue looks at Master's Bro so strangely, like he's on guard against him. So he's been giving the brothers all these goodies behind his back. I'm going to strike it rich by following him this time. Fire Dragon Bro dug on, oblivious to the danger behind him.
After helping Master's Bro soothe the frightened Soft Bone Rabbits with Undead powers and bring them under mental control, Banner Bro left to meet Main Body Old Rogue.
Meanwhile, dusk had fallen over Dragon City. Jiang Hao, Owl Bro, and the others walked along the street. They had just bought and rented a storefront on a good stretch of road. It was small, with two floors.
All the Clones there were renovating it now. It would be ready to open tomorrow.
They worked fast. As Jiang Hao watched, two red lanterns went up beside the entrance, followed by a sign reading "Wanmin Hall." Everything was falling into place.
Jiang Hao and the others hurried to the agreed meeting spot with Banner Bro.
"Come on, let's go. I'll take you there now," Banner Bro said, leading Jiang Hao, Owl Bro, and the others back into the sea of snow.
They arrived at the same place once more. Darkness was slowly falling. In the forest, the Clones hauled a steady stream of timber in from afar. Two hired Snowmobiles brought load after load of bricks, while stone slabs and steel bars kept coming out of Soul Tools.
"It's too cold here for poured concrete to meet the requirements, so construction will be slow.
"We can finish the wooden structure first, then improve it bit by bit," Owl Bro said.
Jiang Hao nodded. "The cold does make building difficult here.
"This place is caught in ice storms year-round. Concrete will take longer to set, and the moisture can't evaporate. We'll need fire-type Soul Masters to heat it as we build.
"But this is already pretty good.
"By the way, where's Master's Bro? How's he coming along with the Solar Power and Heating System I gave him last time?"
Jiang Hao was puzzled. He had not seen Master's Bro anywhere since entering the camp. Hadn't he come along too?
Banner Bro gave an awkward smile. "Him? He's busy breeding Soft Bone Rabbits."
Jiang Hao couldn't help laughing. "Breeding Soft Bone Rabbits? How does he dare?
"Good. Let him keep at it."
"In that case, we'll have to assign those other jobs to different Clones.
"Honestly, expecting Master's Bro to research Soul Tools and develop injections all by himself is asking too much.
"No wonder he split himself in two. One person just wasn't enough."
With a helpless sigh, Jiang Hao swept through the Spiritual Sea, searching among the Soul Masters with Mental Attributes.
He soon found his target: a Golden Fox with exceptionally strong Spiritual Power.
After obtaining his Second Soul Ring, the Golden Fox ranked among the top ten Clones in individual Spiritual Power.
Mental Charm and Mental Weakening—both Soul Skills focused on control, weakening an enemy's Spiritual Power or charming them.
Dragon City should have a Junior Soul Master Academy. Send him there.
Jiang Hao gave the order. Far away in Dragon City, Beard Bro looked utterly confused. "What the hell? I haven't even woken up yet, and you're sending me to school?
"That can't be right, Main Body Old Rogue."
Beard Bro wailed. Never had he expected disaster to fall from the sky while he was sitting at home.
His easy days of resting and waiting for victory to land in his lap were over. Now he had to slog through school.
"Don't worry. I'll arrange for some companions to go with you. Isn't that right, Cannon Bro?"
"What are you saying? What kind of talk is that? You know my Martial Soul is Sanpao, and you still want me doing research?
"Are you trying to make me destroy something at any cost?"
Before you continue
