Background / History
Shrek Dean and Soul Hunting
Yan Shaozhe is Mu En’s disciple and serves as Shrek Academy’s dean. His interest in Jiang Hao increases after the boy awakens a Body Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power. With Qian Duoduo away, he offers to take Jiang Hao Soul Hunting and introduces him to his personal disciple, Ma Xiaotao, hoping to arrange a marriage match. Xuan Zi takes over the expedition despite Yan’s reluctance 3.
The hunt ends in deaths and serious injuries. Yan is furious that Xuan Zi abandoned the students, but Mu En protects the elder as Shrek’s intended future guardian and assigns Yan responsibility for compensating the victims. Yan settles the families’ grievances and withstands pressure from a duke’s household without letting the incident become public; Jiang Hao’s staged accusations subsequently expose it across Shrek City 8 9 10.
Ordered to retrieve Xuan Zi, Yan returns to the Star Dou Great Forest with Xian Ling’er, Jiang Hao, Ma Xiaotao, and Zhang Lexuan. He also watches Jiang Hao for unusual behavior at Mu En’s request, eventually finding nothing suspicious. During the expedition, he helps Jiang Hao obtain a five-hundred-year Gem Lanternfish Soul Ring and supervises its absorption 11 12 13.
Ma Xiaotao’s Crisis and Break with Shrek
When Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire takes control of her and she gravely wounds Jiang Hao, Yan suppresses her with light-aspected Soul Power. He recognizes that the fire has accumulated under years of suppression and blames himself for his handling of her condition, including driving her out of Shrek 61.
Xuan Zi seizes the crisis as an opportunity to restore his reputation. Mu En authorizes the public destruction of Jiang Hao’s and Ma Xiaotao’s Martial Souls, while explicitly forbidding their deaths. Yan pleads for his disciple but is restrained by other elders and fails to prevent the pair from being taken away 62.
The following day, Yan attacks Xuan Zi to free Ma Xiaotao. Although beaten and pinned to the ground, he rejects the claim that light or evil attributes determine a person’s morality. His declaration completes the God of Light’s first trial and triggers a breakthrough. He continues fighting, but Xuan Zi defeats him again; Cannon Bro, Owl Bro, and Fire Dragon Bro then use his Soul Power and Ultimate Light in a fusion that creates the Radiant Ancestral Dragon 66 68.
Joining the Fatui
After escaping, Yan initially considers hiding in the mountains with Ma Xiaotao, believing no Soul Master organization will accept her. Owl Bro and Banner Bro challenge this assumption and offer both of them a home in the Fatui. Yan accepts the vacant First Harbinger position on the condition that he personally guide Xiaotao and uphold that she is not an Evil Soul Master. He asks the others to call him “Old Yan” instead of “Dean Yan” 72.
His new life also forces him to reassess his former standing. He admits that much of his influence came from Shrek’s name and that he has no true friends among the contacts he considers approaching. He subsequently proposes establishing an academy, offers to teach the Fatui’s younger members, and writes an introduction to the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect 80 82 83.
Cassell College and External Affairs
As Cassell College’s dean and the Fatui’s Captain, Yan supports the organization’s dealings with major sects and political figures. He protects Pantalone from Elder Scarlet Flame, supervises student sparring, and backs Ma Xiaotao during her restricted duel with the Xuanming Sect’s Fourth Elder. After she kills the elder, Yan prevents the sect’s other elders from entering the arena to retaliate 95 128 129 134 135.
In the Dou Ling Empire, Prince Xue Caikun seeks Yan’s support while preparing to seize the throne. Yan handles the prince’s questions cautiously and participates in discussions concerning an Evil Soul Master suppression effort and its associated commission 139 140 141.
Return to Shrek and War
Yan returns to Shrek City at level 98, explicitly representing Cassell College and the Fatui rather than seeking reinstatement. He demands that Shrek publicly apologize, clear Ma Xiaotao’s name, and require Xuan Zi to bow and apologize to her. He stakes a valuable torso Soul Bone and ultimately his life on the competition’s outcome 150 151.
During the confrontation, he again declares that anyone attacking the Fatui will make an enemy of him. Shrek’s eventual defeat forces Xuan Zi to issue a continent-wide apology and greatly increases Cassell College’s reputation 156 158.
Yan later fights the Sun Moon Empire’s forces alongside Ma Xiaotao. He challenges her to a teacher–disciple contest over their battlefield performance, attacks enemy troops with Bright Phoenix feathers, and counters Mad Bull Douluo when the latter intervenes 163.
Appearance
- Handsome despite his age: Jiang Hao notes that Yan still looks good even though he is getting on in years 14.
- Golden eyes under power: His pupils glimmer pale gold when he confronts the Dark Tiger; his eyes become brilliantly golden during later displays of authority 14 79.
- Formerly bearded: He strokes his beard during the forest expedition. By his reunion with Cai Mei’er, his coarse beard is gone and his face is smooth 15 153.
- Radiant combat imagery: His Martial Soul manifests as a Bright Phoenix phantom, and his rescue attempt carries him toward the prison cart like a golden meteor 66 89.
Personality
Yan is affectionate toward his students and willing to invest effort in their cultivation. He praises Jiang Hao’s talent, accepts the boy’s decision to reject an offensive Soul Ring, and researches Shrek’s historical records to plan Ma Xiaotao’s ring configuration 12. His care can also become intrusive: he tries to change Jiang Hao’s reserved manner and deliberately brings him together with Xiaotao as a prospective marriage match 3.
Initially, his loyalty to Shrek limits his opposition to its senior leaders. He resents having to repair Xuan Zi’s mistakes but still carries out Mu En’s instructions and helps contain the resulting scandal. Xiaotao’s public punishment becomes the point at which he chooses his own judgment over institutional obedience 8 10 62 66.
His rejection of attribute-based morality does not immediately erase every prejudice. Even after his awakening, he assumes Xiaotao must hide because of her Evil Fire, and he initially underestimates some Fatui youths because of their disabilities or unusual Martial Souls. Their abilities repeatedly overturn his expectations 72 83 84 85.
Later, Yan becomes assertive about his new identity and protective of his fellow Fatui executives. His battlefield outlook is also more pragmatic: during the Sun Moon conflict, he dismisses labels such as justice, evil, and kindness as imposed concepts and thinks in terms of interests 95 163.
Abilities & Skills
Bright Phoenix

- Flight and transport: Carries Jiang Hao and Ma Xiaotao through the air toward the Star Dou Great Forest 11.
- Evil Fire restraint: Suppresses Ma Xiaotao during her loss of control. Suppression is not a lasting cure; her accumulated fire later becomes part of the crisis he regrets 61.
- Feather attacks: Manifests numerous Bright Phoenix feathers and sends them through enemy troop formations 163.
- Defensive counterattack: Swallows Mad Bull Douluo’s cannon blast into his Bright Phoenix, then returns a beam of light 163.

- Attribute evolution: His light attribute reaches Ultimate Light following the breakthrough 68.

- Later standing: At level 98, he and Xuan Zi have equal Soul Power levels, while Xuan Zi’s non-Ultimate attribute faces suppression from Yan’s Ultimate Light 156.
