Background / History

Small River Village and Adoption

Jiang Tian was abandoned as a child and raised collectively by the villagers of Small River Village, eating at different families’ tables. After becoming successful, he repaid them with a hundred-year tax exemption and material assistance, helping the village become prosperous 2.

He later found an abandoned infant drifting down a stream in the same village. Seeing their shared circumstances as fate, he adopted the child and named him Jiang Mingyang 1. He raised Mingyang without favoritism and arranged tutors for reading, music, art, mathematics, and Soul Beast studies 1 8.

Provincial Service and Recall to Court

After becoming a Soul Douluo, Jiang Tian was assigned to govern and protect Fasinuo Province. The appointment placed an unusually powerful official in a major agricultural region bordering the increasingly rebellious Balak Kingdom 1.

As Crown Prince Xue Qinghe’s influence grew, Jiang Tian supported him and prepared to return to the capital. He permitted Mingyang to accompany the prince ahead of him, despite finding the departure unexpectedly rushed 4.

His recall brought appointment as Grand General of Huaiyuan and Grand Marshal of Shenwu, together with authority over military operations against the Star Luo Empire. Emperor Xue Ye also rewarded his wife and sons, granted the family Cheng Garden, and publicly presented Jiang Tian with the scepter of imperial military authority 7 8.

Campaigns Against Balak

When Balak rebelled, Xue Qinghe ordered Jiang Tian to lead an army of one hundred thousand. His forces rapidly retook much of Balak’s western outskirts, but covert Spirit Hall assistance and support from other rebels eventually stalled their advance 24.

Jiang Tian also brought Mingyang into military service. Rather than treating him as an ordinary vanguard soldier, he offered a route toward Commandant rank and independent command, provided Mingyang earned the soldiers’ respect 23 24. He later took Mingyang back to the battlefield when Balak again refused to pay taxes 30.

His handling of the earlier rebellion established his reputation for exceptional command and oversight of the entire battlefield, leaving his position as Heaven Dou’s foremost military commander largely unchallenged 87.

Support for Jiang Mingyang’s Rise

Jiang Tian privately regretted his own decision to submit to the existing political order. Suspecting that Mingyang’s travels had raised questions about the treatment of ordinary people, he resolved to support his adopted son even at the cost of his life 19.

After learning about Mingyang’s divine inheritance, he explicitly promised to support whatever future Mingyang chose. Mingyang then declared his intention to replace the Heaven Dou and Star Luo empires 46.

When rumors of Mingyang’s Mandate of Heaven spread, Jiang Tian initially considered the announcement premature. Once reassured about Mingyang’s strength, he offered to hold the capital and planned to establish a provincial foothold through Jiang Ti and Jiang Nan 75. When Mingyang unexpectedly began presiding over state affairs, Jiang Tian ordered army drills so the family would be ready if the situation forced an open struggle for power 85.

Military Power and Voluntary Retreat

Jiang Tian expanded his forces and suppressed military factions opposed to Mingyang. This support also became a source of unease: roughly eighty percent of Mingyang’s troops came from Jiang Tian, and most senior commanders were his men. Mingyang feared that Jiang Tian’s orders might outweigh those of the regent—or even the emperor 102 111.

Jiang Tian recognized the danger of appearing to overshadow his adopted son. At an army camp, an officer’s accidental decision to announce the Grand General before the Prince of Wei alarmed him, although Mingyang accepted the apology without punishment 114.

After Mingyang became emperor, Jiang Tian voluntarily surrendered two-thirds of his military authority. He understood that a minister commanding more troops than the founding emperor would undermine the new ruler and strain their father-son bond 129. He remained Grand General and guarded the altar during the new empire’s founding ceremony 132.

Personality

Jiang Tian places strong value on gratitude and responsibility. His repayment of Small River Village provides the example he wants Mingyang to follow: cultivate diligently, become independent, and use personal success to benefit others 2.

As a father, he balances protection with independence. He believes children should remain sheltered until twelve, but afterward supports Mingyang’s travels and choices about tournament participation. He also refuses to impose his own answers on questions Mingyang wants to resolve firsthand 3 8 16.

His tolerance extends to Mingyang’s private life. Believing that Mingyang and the publicly male Emperor Xue Qinghe are lovers, he awkwardly assures his son that he will not judge him 46.

Politically, Jiang Tian is pragmatic and attentive to hierarchy. His loyalty to Mingyang outweighs attachment to the Heaven Dou imperial family, but he also recognizes when retaining excessive power would damage the relationship he wishes to preserve 19 46 114 129.

Abilities & Skills

Bright Moon Bow

Jiang Tian combines personal strength with extensive control over officers, troops, and military institutions 87 111.

  • Leads rapid advances against Balak and coordinates the broader battlefield 24 87.
  • Uses his position to create opportunities for Mingyang’s promotion and military connections 23 24.
  • Expands forces and strengthens the capital’s defenses while suppressing factions opposed to Mingyang 102.

Cultivation Guidance and Protection

  • Recommends Soul Skills with percentage-based benefits that remain useful at higher cultivation levels 3.
  • Has suitable first-ring Soul Beasts captured in advance, then supervises Mingyang’s acquisition of his first ring 3.

  • Xue Fang — Wife and Mingyang’s adoptive mother. A Swan Martial Soul user whom the court names Lady of Yongjia Commandery 1 7.
  • Jiang Ti — Eldest son and Bright Moon Bow user. Participates in the family’s preparations for Mingyang’s rise and is considered for deployment to Fasinuo Province 1 75 85.

  • Qian Renxue / Xue Qinghe — Supports her public identity as crown prince and later emperor. Her confidence in an early succession partly rests on Jiang Tian’s backing; he misunderstands her relationship with Mingyang while she remains publicly male 4 28 46.
  • Ma Hongjun — Mingyang’s friend and follower. Jiang Tian readily helps suppress his Evil Fire and accompanies him on the Sunset Forest Soul Ring hunt 23 48 52.
