While Tai Tan was at the Xuanming Sect, back at Jiang Nannan's home...
Tang Qi and Jiang Nannan helped Jiang Mother inside and carefully settled her on the bed.
Her breathing was still a little weak, but she was much better than before.
Once Jiang Nannan was sure her mother was all right, she and Tang Qi quietly withdrew. One after the other, they entered the living room.
"Um..."
Jiang Nannan stopped and turned around, her beautiful eyes fixed on Tang Qi without blinking.
"I don't think I've asked your name yet."
"Tang Qi."
"Oh..."
Jiang Nannan nodded blankly. Tang Qi walked past her to a chair by the dining table and sat down as though he owned the place, without a trace of a guest's reserve.
"Something wrong?"
Seeing her standing there in a daze, Tang Qi raised an eyebrow.
"No, nothing!"
Jiang Nannan hurriedly waved her hands, her slender, fair fingers fluttering wildly through the air. At some point, a blush had crept across her lovely face.
The air seemed to freeze.
The girl stole glances at him now and then. After weighing her words for a long while, she finally gathered her courage and asked in a clear voice, "Little brother Tang Qi, have you eaten?"
"What did you say?"
Tang Qi frowned at her.
"Have... have you eaten?"
His reaction left Jiang Nannan at a loss. Thinking she had said something wrong, she obediently repeated herself.
"The part before that."
"Little brother Tang Qi..."
The words slipped out before Jiang Nannan could stop them.
"I went to all that trouble to drive off the Xuanming Sect's people, then sent someone to find medicine for your mother."
Tang Qi folded his arms and watched her at his leisure, amusement in his voice. "What did you call me?"
His stare made Jiang Nannan uncomfortable all over. Her watery eyes fluttered as she looked back at him helplessly.
"Little brother Tang Qi... I'm older than you, so..."
"If we didn't know each other, I wouldn't fault you for calling me little brother because of our ages," Tang Qi interrupted with a half smile. "But you agreed to my condition. What do you think you should call me now?"
Jiang Nannan froze, then understood.
The tips of her ears turned bright red, and her cheeks burned. She lowered her head, her voice as faint as a mosquito's whine.
"...Brother..."
Tang Qi's lips curved upward. He raised an eyebrow, pretending he hadn't heard.
"What was that?"
"You—!"
Jiang Nannan glared at him, her lovely face flushed with indignation, her pink lips pouting and her eyes wide.
But the moment she met Tang Qi's smiling eyes, her indignation crumbled. She wilted, looked away in embarrassed frustration, and spoke a little louder.
"Bro... brother..."
This time, Tang Qi really couldn't hold it in.
He lifted a hand to his forehead, fighting back laughter.
Seeing that, Jiang Nannan grew both embarrassed and angry. She bit her lower lip and shot him a glare, her face crimson.
She couldn't tell whether it was embarrassment or anger making her face burn so fiercely. She wanted nothing more than to crawl into a crack in the floor.
Just then, the curtain over the bedroom doorway was suddenly lifted.
Jiang Mother had recovered enough strength to get out of bed. She pushed the curtain aside and emerged, only to walk straight into this scene.
"Nannan, you..."
Jiang Mother had never imagined her dignified, quiet daughter had a side of herself no one knew.
The mother stopped short of saying more, a complicated look on her face.
Jiang Nannan jumped and spun around, meeting her mother's gaze.
She opened her mouth but found herself at a loss for words. In the end, she could only lower her head and flee back to her room.
Jiang Mother shook her head helplessly, then turned to Tang Qi with a gentle expression.
Before she could speak, Tang Qi stood and introduced himself politely. "Auntie, my name is Tang Qi. You can call me Little Qi."
A smile appeared on Jiang Mother's face.
"Little Qi, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Come eat with us."
Tang Qi didn't stand on ceremony. He nodded readily. "Sorry for the trouble, Auntie."
It was all Haji San's fault for waking him up so early. Since arriving on Douluo Continent, he hadn't had a single bite to eat.
He had a path to death all laid out for him!
Smiling, Jiang Mother went into the kitchen.
Before long, the clatter from the kitchen was joined by the soft creak of Jiang Nannan's bedroom door.
Children from poor families learned to run a household early.
Jiang Nannan had lost her father when she was young, and Jiang Mother was frail and often ill. So Jiang Nannan had learned early on to help her mother cook and manage the housework.
She shuffled out of her room with her head down. As she passed Tang Qi, she noticed his undisguised gaze, lowered her head even further, and darted into the kitchen as though fleeing.
Soon, steaming dishes were brought to the table.
It was no lavish feast, but there was fish and meat. Their aromas filled the little living room and made Tang Qi's mouth water.
Jiang Mother and Jiang Nannan sat on either side of Tang Qi, occasionally putting food into his bowl.
Tang Qi didn't stand on ceremony. He accepted every bite they offered.
As the Son of God, his physique far surpassed that of an ordinary child. Naturally, his appetite was astonishing too.
"Is it good?"
Jiang Nannan's eyes curved with a smile. Her earlier shyness gone, she propped her chin in her hands and watched Tang Qi tuck in, curiosity in her voice.
Tang Qi didn't say a word, but the thumb he raised said it all.
Time passed, minute by minute.
Mother and daughter stared in astonishment as the food on the table visibly dwindled. In the end, more than half of it had gone into Tang Qi's stomach.
"You... you have quite an appetite, don't you?"
Jiang Nannan couldn't help warning him softly, afraid he might make himself sick.
Tang Qi set down his bowl and chopsticks and let out a satisfied breath.
Leaning back comfortably in his chair, he said with heartfelt feeling, "That was the best meal I've had in this world."
After all, it had only been one day, at most, since Tang Qi had escaped the control of his Biological Dad and biological mother and come to Douluo Continent.
Hearing such sincere praise from Tang Qi delighted both mother and daughter.
Tang Qi pulled out the Gold Soul Coins he had just "picked up" from the Xuanming Sect steward and poured them all onto the table.
He had smelled food drifting from the kitchen while he was still in the courtyard. Yet the mother and daughter had kept busy for so long afterward that they had clearly cooked another meal from scratch.
A spread this generous could not have been cheap.
"Little Qi... what are you doing?" The smile vanished from Jiang Mother's face.
"Auntie, it's just a small token of my appreciation," Tang Qi said with a light smile.
"I still can't accept it!"
When Jiang Mother remained unmoved, Tang Qi pushed the Gold Soul Coins toward Jiang Nannan instead.
"Take them..."
"But..."
Jiang Nannan looked at her mother, then at the pile of Gold Soul Coins. The little money-lover inside her was already clamoring wildly, but she still felt a bit embarrassed. She looked pleadingly at Jiang Mother. "Mom..."
"Take them. Consider it a gift from an older brother to his younger sister," Tang Qi said calmly.
At those words, Jiang Mother couldn't help looking up at the boy before her. He was still so young, yet everything he said and did carried the air of an adult.
After a moment's silence, she had no choice but to nod helplessly.
Jiang Nannan immediately broke into a delighted smile, her beautiful eyes curving.
She eagerly scooped the Gold Soul Coins into her hands, then ran excitedly back to her room.
