Ch. 1Where Fate Began: Shinji and Naruto
Plot points and events
- On the first snowy evening, Shinji Uchiha returns to Konoha after a long absence and visits the Uchiha household, bringing Mikoto a gift of fish from the Land of Water.
- Mikoto welcomes him warmly and tells him about the family: Nobihi is growing up and has recently gone on a mission with Itachi, while Sasuke is becoming mischievous. Shinji says he is staying in the village, though he remains emotionally reserved.
- When Sasuke throws a kunai at Shinji, Shinji protects Mikoto and deflects it in one motion. Sasuke watches him leave, impressed but still insisting that Itachi is the strongest ninja.
- Mikoto reminds Sasuke that Shinji’s parents saved their family, and tells him to treat Shinji and Nobihi like older brothers.
- At Ichiraku Ramen, Shinji is eager to eat proper food again after two years of relying on Soldier Pills. He bumps into a small blond boy—Naruto—who apologizes fearfully.
- Expecting to be insulted or attacked as usual, Naruto is instead met with kindness. Shinji gently reassures him, and Naruto asks in surprise whether Shinji is afraid of him.
Character developments and interactions
- Shinji is capable and vigilant, as shown by his swift response to Sasuke’s kunai, but also restrained and kind. He keeps a polite distance from Mikoto despite her affection, yet treats Naruto gently.
- Mikoto is openly affectionate toward Shinji and worries about the strain of adolescence on her sons. She also tries to teach Sasuke respect and gratitude toward Shinji’s family.
- Sasuke is competitive and devoted to Itachi, measuring Shinji’s skill against his brother’s. His pride makes him reluctant to accept Mikoto’s advice.
- Naruto approaches strangers expecting rejection because of how the villagers treat him. Shinji’s acceptance surprises him and begins a moment of connection.
Significant themes
- Belonging and family: Mikoto hopes Shinji’s return will reunite the family, while Shinji’s reserve hints at emotional distance.
- Gratitude and respect: Mikoto ties the family’s history of being saved to the duty to treat Shinji and Nobihi as brothers.
- Prejudice and kindness: Naruto expects hatred, but Shinji responds with compassion, suggesting that one person’s kindness can challenge a child’s isolation.
- Strength and admiration: Sasuke’s encounter with Shinji tests his confidence in Itachi’s superiority, though he refuses to concede.
