Background / History

Madara was one of Konoha’s two founders. His relationship with Hashirama later became a rivalry, culminating in their battle at the Valley of the End. Madara eventually admits that his attack on Konoha with the Nine-Tails was intended to obtain Hashirama’s power; combining their powers enabled him to awaken the Rinnegan 45 151 158.

He saved Obito’s life and chose him as a successor, passing down Yin–Yang Release, Uchiha ninjutsu and forbidden techniques, and his own technical knowledge through the Sharingan. That inheritance included an early, incomplete version of Impure World Reincarnation. Madara also planted a cursed seal in Obito’s heart to control him 146 159 168.

Madara spent decades hidden while pursuing Infinite Tsukuyomi. After his death, Obito used his name while attempting to carry out the plan independently, explicitly declaring that Madara should remain in the Pure Land 77 169.

The masked “Madara”

  • Obito’s actions are not Madara’s direct appearances. The masked man involved in the Uchiha massacre, Yagura’s control, and Akatsuki’s tailed-beast operations is Obito impersonating him 33 59 77.
  • Danzo recognizes the deception when Obito attacks Konoha alongside the genuinely reanimated Madara 151.
  • Sasuke later exposes Obito’s identity publicly, prompting him to remove his mask before Minato and Kakashi 159.

Appearance

  • Before becoming a jinchūriki: Has long hair and wears armor; his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan can change into the Rinnegan’s concentric-ring pattern 158 173.
  • Ten-Tails transformation: His hair turns white, his armor becomes a white coat, and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs float behind him 173.
  • Forehead features: Has a horn that Sasuke partially cuts off; later reveals a forehead Rinne Sharingan to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi 177.

Personality

Madara is patient, calculating, and willing to treat others as instruments. He conceals his knowledge of Impure World Reincarnation’s weakness until Obito tries to dismiss him, then turns his former pupil’s own body into the means of securing his resurrection 168 169.

He enjoys challenging Hashirama and answers Tobirama’s mockery with composure, even while under Obito’s control. His confidence does not prevent tactical retreat: after acknowledging that Neji’s power surpasses his own, he prioritizes preserving the Ten-Tails and escaping rather than continuing a losing battle 151 161.

His greatest misjudgment is his trust in Black Zetsu. Madara dismisses Neji’s warning because he believes Zetsu is part of his own consciousness, only to discover that his lifelong plan has served Kaguya’s resurrection 178.

Abilities & Skills

Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo

  • Produces a dark-blue Perfect Susanoo over 200 meters tall, armed with a samurai sword 151 161.
  • Channels Rinnegan techniques through Susanoo, including enormous, directionally concentrated repulsive attacks 158 174.
  • After becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, combines Ten-Tails chakra and Senjutsu chakra into Sage Art: Susanoo 174.
  • Its defenses are not absolute: Neji’s tornado destroys it, and Naruto’s Boil Release barrage shatters its jinchūriki-enhanced form 161 174.

Rinnegan

  • Shinra Tensei: Repels Hashirama’s Wooden Man and later destroys his giant statue with a Susanoo-enhanced blast 158 159.
  • Planetary Devastation: Creates attraction cores to gather rock into enormous masses; later splits one core into dozens to force his pursuers into defensive action 158 177.
  • Meteor attacks: Summons six enormous flaming meteors against Hashirama and later rains meteors onto Naruto and Sasuke 158 175.
  • Chakra absorption: Extracts Hashirama’s Sage Chakra after immobilizing him 159.
  • Reanimation limitation: States that his Impure World Reincarnation body cannot draw out the Rinnegan’s full power 158.

Limbo: Border Jail

  • Creates invisible shadows with power approaching his own. Naruto cannot see them but can sense and evade their attacks 174.
  • Deploys four shadows capable of using Perfect Susanoo and Shinra Tensei 175.
  • Uses their interference to escape after Sasuke pierces his heart, and later to delay Neji’s pursuit 176 177.
  • The technique has a cooldown; Kaguya later inherits and uses it after absorbing Madara 185.

Wood Release and Fire Release

  • Uses Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence alongside Nagato to spread giant roots across much of Konoha 151.
  • Uses Fire Release: Dust Concealment Technique to obscure the battlefield and create an escape opportunity. Its Sage Art version blankets several kilometers in superheated smoke 161 177.
  • After Infinite Tsukuyomi, spreads roots worldwide to bind its victims in cocoons 177.

Ten-Tails and Six Paths Power

  • Becomes the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki using Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal 173.
  • Gains nine Truth-Seeking Orbs, a black staff, and flight 173 177.
  • Regenerates every wound on his body within two breaths during the battle with Naruto 175.
  • Uses Light Fang, which Naruto successfully dodges 174.
  • Remains vulnerable to sufficiently powerful opponents: Naruto and Sasuke repeatedly damage him despite his regeneration 174 176 177.

Cursed Seals and Reincarnation Knowledge

  • Planted a control seal on Obito’s heart that Obito could not remove himself 159.
  • Activates the trap faster than Obito can use Kamui, causing black rods and black matter to immobilize him 168.
  • Forces Obito to perform Rinne Rebirth; the technique restores Madara’s life at the cost of Obito’s 168 169.
  • Knows the hand seals that allow a summoned shinobi to sever an Impure World Reincarnation contract 168.

Infinite Tsukuyomi

  • Reflects his forehead Rinne Sharingan in the moon to ensnare nearly all living things on the planet 177.
  • Uses worldwide Wood Release to cocoon the victims and begins drawing their chakra into himself 177 178.
  • Does not affect Impure World Reincarnation bodies or Neji, Sasuke, and Naruto, who are all Ten-Tails jinchūriki 177 178.
  • The gathered chakra becomes the means of Kaguya’s resurrection when Black Zetsu takes control of Madara 178.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Flame Gunbai — Obito hands it to him before assigning him to fight Hashirama 151.
  • Black rods — Used to pin Hashirama before absorbing his Sage Chakra 159.
  • Black Zen Staff — Appears during his Ten-Tails transformation and is used against Naruto 173 174.
  • Nine Truth-Seeking Orbs — Manifest behind him upon becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 173.
  • Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan — Transplants one eye after his resurrection and assigns the remaining eye to Fly 169.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Former friend, fellow Konoha founder, and enduring rival. Madara obtains his power to awaken the Rinnegan and later defeats him to steal his Sage Chakra 45 158 159.
  • Obito Uchiha — Rescued pupil and chosen successor. Their relationship becomes a contest of control, ending when Madara forces Obito to sacrifice his life through Rinne Rebirth 146 151 168 169.
  • Tobirama Senju — Hostile opponent who mocks Madara for being controlled by his own successor and by Tobirama’s reincarnation technique 151.
  • Black Zetsu — Trusted as an extension of Madara’s consciousness; actually Kaguya’s agent, who manipulates and ultimately betrays him 178.
  • Fly — White Zetsu subordinate entrusted with Obito’s remaining eye. Provides Kamui transport and a potential escape route until Neji and Kakashi kill him 169 173 176.
  • Neji Hyuga — Opponent whose Tenseigan power forces Madara to retreat. Later cuts off his escape route and warns him about Black Zetsu 161 176 178.
  • Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha — Ten-Tails jinchūriki opponents who coordinate against him and repeatedly prevent him from gaining a decisive advantage 174 175 176.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reanimation and the Konoha assault

Obito has Kabuto revive Madara at his peak using a specially created White Zetsu sacrifice. During the attack on Konoha, Madara helps overwhelm the village’s defenders before Obito assigns him to occupy Hashirama. Their giant constructs battle outside the village 147 150 151.

The Ten-Tails’ appearance ends Madara’s leisurely approach. He reveals his Rinnegan, defeats Hashirama with meteors and a massive repulsive blast, then absorbs his Sage Chakra. Neji’s arrival reverses his advantage: Madara’s defenses collapse, and he escapes with Obito after helping relocate part of the wounded Ten-Tails 158 159 161.

Resurrection and seizure of the plan

In the Kamui Dimension, Obito attempts to dismiss Madara as no longer useful. Madara breaks the reincarnation contract, activates Obito’s cursed seal, and compels him to perform Rinne Rebirth. After recovering his eyes, he waits for the Ten-Tails to regenerate and absorbs it himself 168 169 173.

Infinite Tsukuyomi and betrayal

Naruto and Sasuke pressure Madara while Neji eliminates Fly, denying him a reliable escape route. Following the Ten-Tails’ suggestion, Madara uses smoke, meteors, and Limbo shadows to gain enough time to reach the moon and cast Infinite Tsukuyomi 174 175 176 177.

Although the technique captures nearly all life, it fails against the three opposing jinchūriki. Madara begins absorbing the victims’ chakra, ignores Neji’s warning, and is pierced from behind by Black Zetsu. His body swells into a sphere from which Kaguya emerges, ending his independent role in the conflict 178.
