The tremendous explosion jolted Resas out of his intent study of the distant Candel Empire camp through the window.
Before he could react, however, a blast wave suddenly struck him.
The workers' quarters at the mine had never been particularly sturdy. The exceptionally powerful blast wave sent the whole room swaying, while the window shattered outright, hurling its fragments toward Resas along with the rushing air.
Resas gave a sharp grunt and circulated the energy within his body, blocking every shard that came flying at him. Then he leaped out of the swaying room, which looked ready to collapse at any moment.
He turned his head and was instantly appalled.
The mine's residential district had become a sea of flames. Debris from the explosions lay everywhere, and he could even see several mangled bodies sprawled on the ground.
His subordinates in the Guards Corps had already been fast asleep. Awakened by the explosion, they all ran out of their barracks.
Fortunately, the Xinfei Merchant Guild Guard Corps maintained extremely strict training. Even in such an emergency, they emerged fully armed. After a brief initial panic, they quickly regained their composure and prepared to assemble.
Resas had no idea what had happened, but this was clearly the moment for him to fulfill his role as captain.
Yet just as he was about to shout orders for his subordinates to assemble and prepare to face the enemy, he suddenly heard a piercing whistle from the sky behind him to the right.
He turned in alarm and saw an intensely bright streak of light hurtling toward them through the sky.
"Scatter!"
Resas had no time for any other orders. He could only turn and shout at the guards gathering around him before diving to one side.
