The STC system was a complex analytical processing program, an artificial intelligence created during the Dark Age of Technology.
It was said to contain all of humanity's technology. After the Dark Age ended, STCs became increasingly rare, until they disappeared entirely.
In the present age of the Imperium, humanity possessed hard copies of STC data, allowing ancient technologies to be preserved.
STCs allowed different human colonies to maintain a standardized level of technology.
A complete, fully functional STC system was a high-tech computer. It could provide colonists with detailed construction instructions, allowing them to use whatever local materials were available to build efficient shelters, generators, and vehicles without any relevant knowledge.
For example, a user only had to ask how to build a house or a tractor, and the STC would provide every necessary plan.
That was what made STCs so formidable. A complete STC could be described as a fully automated production line equipped with artificial intelligence.
Moreover, a complete STC required no specific materials for production. It could absorb any material, restructure it at the molecular level, and then begin manufacturing.
The Adeptus Mechanicus Archmagos seemed to have forgotten everything around him, including the dangerous fall he had just survived and the fully armed Company Captain Paulus beside him.
Like a pilgrim finally reaching the holy land of his dreams, he dragged his heavy mechanical body toward the pure white sphere standing at the center of the chamber, his steps unsteady yet utterly resolute.
His movements were filled with reverence. Rather than walking, he seemed to be performing a Ritual approach.
Every step was cautious, as though he feared disturbing this ancient creation, which had slept for untold millennia.
At last, he reached the sphere and gazed up at its seamless, mirror-smooth surface. It reflected the beam of
