A skilled Hunter never fought a pack head-on. He found ways to Severance it apart and pick its members off one by one.

Lorne noticed that the wounded Worm Man seemed to have drifted slightly farther from its companions in their "back-to-back" formation after his earlier attack. Its "attention" also seemed more focused on its injury and the ground around it, leaving it less vigilant overhead and behind its flanks.

This was an opportunity.

Lorne silently lowered a slender but exceptionally tough alloy cable coated in light-absorbing material from his hiding place, with a miniature magnetic grappling hook at its end.

He adjusted the angle and, within the visual blind spot between the wounded Worm Man and the vigilant one, gently attached the hook to a pipe behind the wounded creature's flank. The cable stretched taut about a meter and a half above the ground, almost invisible in the dim light.

Then he made another faint noise, this time striking a metal wall with a small pebble far ahead of the Worm Man standing watch.

Sure enough, the vigilant Worm Man took the bait and was distracted again.

The instant it turned its head, Lorne fired a miniature stun grenade from above the pipes at the ground between the wounded Worm Man and the other, quiet one. It was nonlethal, but produced a bright flash and thick smoke.

Bang! Hiss!

The brilliant flash vanished in an instant, but acrid smoke billowed out immediately. Though the ventilation system quickly dispersed it, it was enough to create a brief visual barrier and confusion.

Startled by the sudden flash and smoke, the wounded Worm Man stepped back to one side—and tripped over the almost invisible alloy cable!

Its massive body of worms lost its balance and toppled sideways, briefly breaking its back-to-back contact
