Elsewhere, the corner of a relatively narrow auxiliary passage had become a bloody slaughterhouse.

The air reeked of heavy Smoke, the metallic tang of blood, and assorted foul odors.

Bolt craters, laser scorch marks, and dense punctures left by Shuriken Weapons covered the walls. Bodies lay strewn across the floor.

Most were Imperial Army soldiers in khaki uniforms who had met gruesome deaths, along with four Word Bearers Legion warriors in dark gray power armor whose Helmets had been pierced by the precise shots of Aeldari Rangers.

The six remaining Word Bearers Adeptus Astartes had been forced to spread out on either side of the right-angle bend, using wrecked heavy metal structures and stacked cargo crates as makeshift cover.

Trapped alongside them were over a dozen Imperial Army soldiers, fear and grim resolve mingling on their faces. They gripped their Lasguns so tightly that their fingers had turned white.

Pinning them down was a numerically superior Aeldari force.

More than ten Aeldari Guardians in brightly colored, streamlined armor had spread out in a practiced tactical formation, using pillars and wreckage in the passage for cover. Their deadly Shuriken Catapults poured an unrelenting hail of fire into the corners where the humans sheltered.

Countless sharp crystal fragments battered their cover like a raging storm, producing teeth-grating cracks and snaps that kept the Imperial Army soldiers from even raising their heads.

An even deadlier threat came from three Aeldari Rangers hidden in the shadows farther away.

The long-barreled rifles these Elite marksmen wielded had exceptional range and accuracy, and fired almost silently.

Every flash of those distinctive laser beams, accompanied by a faint, high-frequency hum, invariably meant an Imperial Army soldier taking a precise shot to the head, or another deep scorch mark seared into the
