Ch. 701The Orks' tactics
Key events
- Horus, Captain Brutus, and a small band of Justaerin Terminators are trapped deep inside Ullanor’s fortress, fighting an apparently endless Ork assault. After a month of combat, their armour and weapons are failing, ammunition and supplies are nearly gone, and casualties are mounting.
- Their decapitation strike began promisingly, but the White Scars’ defensive sector was breached. Ork fleets poured into the system, throwing the Imperial siege into chaos and cutting off effective orbital support.
- Warboss Urlakk proves strategically capable: he uses Ork air superiority to reinforce the planet, while ground forces raid supply lines, ambush isolated units, and delay Perturabo’s main force from reaching Horus.
- As Horus’s force advances through the fortress, Orks seal off its retreat and attack from unexpected routes. With contact to the outside world nearly lost, the survivors are reduced to close combat.
- Horus recognizes that, without reinforcements, he may die there. He nevertheless orders his warriors to hold formation and declares that the Luna Wolves will not yield. They answer his rallying cry and fight on.
Character developments and interactions
- Horus shifts from confident battlefield dominance to exhausted, methodical survival, conserving strength and targeting weaknesses. Though furious at Urlakk and aware of the danger, he sustains his warriors’ resolve through forceful leadership.
- Brutus remains aggressive and loyal, fighting beside Horus back to back. He adapts to dwindling resources by ordering the troops to conserve ammunition and rely on melee weapons.
- The Justaerin are badly battered but remain organized and steadfast, protecting their Primarch and responding to his final call.
- Urlakk, though never seen directly, emerges as a cunning opponent whose deliberate tactics have isolated Horus’s force.
Significant themes
- The cost of underestimating an enemy: The Orks’ apparent lack of sophistication masks effective coordination and strategy.
- Isolation and attrition: The elite Imperial force is gradually worn down by disrupted supply lines, overwhelming numbers, and severed communications.
- Leadership and defiance: Horus’s authority and resolve give the survivors purpose even when their chances of rescue appear negligible.
- Heroism amid desperation: The warriors’ refusal to surrender contrasts with the grim possibility that a Primarch may fall.
