The two assault squads were sent in separate directions.
Clearly, investigating the Orks' battlefield factory would be the more complicated task. With these Primaris warriors lacking sufficient experience in dealing with Orks, Calando decided to lead them himself.
Reconnoitering the battlefield, on the other hand, would be relatively straightforward. To ensure they obtained accurate information, Calando assigned Iax to accompany the other assault squad toward the explosions and flashes of fire they had seen earlier.
After all, the journey had given Calando a clear understanding of Iax's detection capabilities. With those abilities to assist them, scouting the battlefield would be much easier. Pushing deep into Ork territory to find their War Factory would be more complicated by comparison.
Calando did not want to place his hopes on an Ancient Construct.
Iax naturally had no objections.
It might have been better if these Ultramarines were willing to follow his commands.
But Iax immediately abandoned that thought.
After all, his command expertise did not extend to biological soldiers like these.
If he treated them as the cheapest expendable robots, there was no telling what problems might arise afterward.
Automated combat machines, after all, knew neither fear nor any other emotion. Apart from being somewhat rigid and susceptible to interference without higher-level units coordinating their actions, they had virtually no shortcomings.
The force split into two squads beneath the tower and set off in separate directions. They agreed to return and regroup there in five hours. If enemies occupied the rendezvous point by then, they would fall back to the hills they had passed earlier and regroup there instead.
After checking their equipment, the two squads parted ways.
Apart from Calando and Adrian, everyone had been warned earlier to avoid communicating with the Men of Iron as much as possible. Iax only knew
