Ch. 41Brother Xiao Went from Arrogance to Obsequiousness; the Evil Fire Phoenix Attacked the God King
Plot points and events
- After fleeing through the night, Yu Tianjun, Xiao Hongchen, Ji Juechen, Liao Mengkai, and their captives stop in a remote wilderness. The journey has left everyone exhausted.
- Yu reveals he preserved the female Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear’s soul ring. Xiao initially celebrates the prospect of absorbing it, then pays three million Gold Soul Coins to keep it from being sold to the Terror Claw Soul Engineer Legion.
- Yu then reveals the bear also had a rare left-arm soul bone. Xiao instantly abandons his pride and begs for it, trading away a one-use Level 9 teleportation device—the Void Emblem. Yu accepts the exchange, and Xiao safely absorbs the soul bone.
- Ji kills the male bear and begins absorbing its soul ring. Yu finds no conventional soul bone on it, then cultivates and breaks through to rank 46. Liao jokes about how powerful Yu and the other young Soul Engineers will become, while gloating over the captured Shrek figures.
- At Shrek Academy, Ning Rongrong complains about the poor facilities. She and Tang San discuss the academy’s legacy and decide not to rebuild the Tang Sect, trusting someone of the current era to do it.
- Ma Xiaotao, overcome by her unstable Evil Fire Phoenix, attacks them. Tang San uses the power of his Sea God trident rune to disperse the flames, but he and Rongrong collapse.
- Yan Shaozhe and a healer arrive. Shaozhe orders the students treated and compensated, but also tells them to forget the incident or face expulsion. Tang San hears this while barely conscious and is appalled by Shrek’s response.
Character developments and interactions
- Xiao Hongchen shifts from boastful triumph to shameless pleading when the soul bone is revealed. He remains proud, but is learning when to bargain and when to yield.
- Yu Tianjun controls the negotiations, teasing Xiao and trading the soul bone for the valuable Void Emblem. His cultivation breakthrough reinforces his exceptional talent.
- Ji Juechen remains stoic through the ordeal and focused on his sword, even while absorbing a soul ring.
- Liao Mengkai is amused by Xiao’s antics and sees the group’s gains as promising for the Sun Moon Empire.
- Ning Rongrong and Tang San share nostalgia for their former lives and Shrek’s history, but their reunion with the academy’s present is far from reassuring.
- Tang San protects Rongrong despite the difference in power, then learns that Shrek’s leadership may prioritize avoiding scandal over student safety.
- Ma Xiaotao is portrayed as a danger to those around her when her evil fire overwhelms her reason; Shaozhe admits its suppression has become increasingly difficult.
Significant themes
- Pride versus pragmatism: Xiao’s reversals show that survival and valuable gains matter more to him than maintaining an image of invincibility.
- Power, ambition, and rivalry: The soul ring, soul bone, and Yu’s breakthrough fuel competition between young talents and hopes for the Sun Moon Empire’s future.
- Legacy and change: Tang San and Rongrong reflect on the institutions and traditions they left behind, only to find the present-day Shrek troublingly different.
- Institutional failure and irony: The academy’s supposed training culture contrasts with Ma Xiaotao’s uncontrolled attack and Shaozhe’s attempt to silence its victims.
