Ch. 181Eighth Battle, the curtain falls!
Plot points and events
- Sasuke’s Wood Release and Earth Grudge Fear strip away Izuna’s Susanoo armor, then destroy the remaining Susanoo. Izuna escapes and uses his right-eye space-manipulating dōjutsu, Ajahe, to sever the pursuing Wood Dragon.
- Sasuke avoids Izuna’s spatial attack and traps him in a vast woodland. Izuna anticipates Sasuke’s ambush, immobilizes him with Ajahe, and attacks with lightning and explosive tags—but the victim is a Wood Release clone.
- Izuna predicts Sasuke’s hiding place and flushes him out, only to discover that Sasuke’s apparent attacks are decoys. Sasuke had concealed himself inside the Crow puppet, whose altered design disrupts sensory abilities. He strikes Izuna with a lightning spear and Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm.
- Sasuke follows with a Lion Combo enhanced by Gentle Fist point-blocking, shutting down Izuna’s chakra points and seemingly winning the Eighth Battle.
- Izuna senses Madara’s chakra and becomes convinced his brother is alive. As Sasuke prepares a finishing seal, Izuna uses Izanagi to escape his defeat, then releases himself from Impure World Reincarnation so he can go warn Madara about Sasuke and the powerful ally he suspects is behind him.
Character developments and interactions
- Sasuke demonstrates patience, tactical ingenuity, and mastery of his combined abilities, repeatedly using clones, misdirection, and the puppet to counter Izuna’s dōjutsu. Izuna recognizes Sasuke’s strength but remains driven by his loyalty to Madara.
- Izuna’s apparent defeat gives way to renewed purpose when he senses his brother. He interprets Sasuke’s composure and unusual powers as evidence of a dangerous force working behind the scenes.
- The battle is an escalating contest of hunter and prey: Izuna turns Sasuke’s woodland ambush against him, while Sasuke ultimately outmaneuvers Izuna through layered deception. Kabuto and Orochimaru observe Sasuke’s final combo and recognize its connection to the Lion Combo and Hyuga techniques.
Significant themes
- Strategy and adaptation: Both fighters repeatedly counter each other’s techniques, making deception as important as raw power.
- Obsession and loyalty: Izuna’s devotion to Madara outweighs his defeat and drives his escape.
- Power and hidden influence: Sasuke’s abilities suggest unseen support, which Izuna sees as a threat to his brother.
- Victory’s uncertainty: Sasuke wins the battle, but Izanagi and Izuna’s release from the summoning prevent that victory from ending the conflict.
