Background / History
The Hyuga's Byakugan supplies intelligence valuable to many of Konoha's clans. Fugaku credits this reconnaissance with preventing substantially greater wartime losses and argues that the Uchiha have no reason to resent the Hyuga's contributions 8.
Within the clan, the Main Family traditionally controls Branch Family members through the Caged Bird Seal and monopolizes advanced techniques. Rotation and Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists are among the techniques withheld from the Branch Family. Even the exceptionally talented Hayato cannot obtain instruction from Hizashi without the clan head's approval 29 32.
Hizashi's death in Hiashi's place leaves Hayato convinced that Branch Family members are disposable sacrifices. Madara wins his allegiance by promising justice and eventual abolition of the seal, then secretly replaces Hayato's seal. Hayato also brings Hizashi's son, Neji, into Madara's training circle 56 57 58. Madara later tells both of them that Hizashi volunteered to die; by the later Chunin Exams, neither remains bound by resentment toward the Main Family 137 142.
Upon becoming Hokage, Madara challenges the clan's hierarchy directly. Hiashi supports abolition, while elder Hyuga Iwame resists until Madara announces that he can distribute a removal method without the elders' cooperation. Iwame yields, ending both the Caged Bird Seal system and the Main–Branch distinction 160 161 162.
Appearance
- White eyes: Hayato's eyes are white even when inactive; activating his Byakugan makes the surrounding veins bulge 20 23.
- Forehead seal: Branch Family members formerly bear the Caged Bird Seal on their foreheads. Hayato conceals his beneath his forehead protector and bandages 57.
- Uncovered foreheads after abolition: Some former Branch Family members openly expose their foreheads once the seal system ends 297.
Abilities & Skills
Byakugan
An ocular ability used for reconnaissance, chakra observation, and precise targeting.
- Hayato uses its described 360-degree field of vision to scout his team's surroundings 23.
- Skilled users can see chakra pathways and acupoints inside an opponent's body 20 41.
- Hayato detects Baki's nearly invisible Wind Blade, preventing its use as a concealed assassination attack 147.
- The Hyuga locate the Second Mizukage's summoning beast through his mist-based Mirage 298.
- Limit: Tetsuya Raikō's Lightning Flash temporarily blinds Hayato, preventing him from exploiting his Byakugan 41.
Gentle Fist
A taijutsu style that injects chakra into an opponent's body to damage the meridian system and internal organs 28.
- Precise strikes can disable limbs or interfere with chakra use despite leaving little visible injury 25 41.
- Hayato paralyzes Tetsuya's four limbs through repeated acupoint strikes 41.
- Limit: Sealing an acupoint is not necessarily permanent. Baki pierces his blocked point with a kunai to restore its function 148.
- Traditional constraint: Holding a kunai interferes with the chakra control required for conventional Gentle Fist precision, prompting Madara to suggest training around that weakness 28.
Rotation
The user releases chakra from bodily acupoints while spinning, producing a rotating hemispherical defense 46.
- Hayato repels poisoned needles and destroys an approaching puppet with Rotation 46.
- During the war, Hyuga members shatter attacking vegetation and establish safe gathering areas inside the First Hokage's forest 292.
- Hayato's modified Rotation destroys Kumogakure's gates and later blocks the Second Mizukage's explosive clone attack 167 300.
- Limit: Mastery requires sufficient aptitude; abolition of the family restrictions does not make every member capable of using it 292.
Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm
A ranged attack that releases highly concentrated chakra from the palm as a shock wave 44.
- Byakugan targeting allows precise attacks against distant acupoints 44 46.
- Hayato severs a puppeteer's chakra threads and disables Baki's hand-sealing ability 46 147.
- Coordinated Vacuum Palms knock the Second Mizukage's lightweight oil-and-water clone away 300.
- Hayato learns to use small, accurately placed bursts rather than waste his limited chakra reserves 46.
Individually Developed Techniques
- Rotation: Modified — Hayato: An offensive use of Rotation capable of smashing through Kumogakure's gates 167.
- Eight Trigrams Palm: Heaven-Breaker — Neji: Condenses Rotation's spinning force into a palm strike. Against the Second Mizukage's clam, it devastates the interior without cracking the shell 298.
