After entering the capital of the Land of Lightning, the six-man Root squad led by Yamanaka Fū realized that Raikō Shōta no longer trusted them. The observant Yamanaka Fū had even noticed that they were effectively surrounded by the Land of Lightning's forces.
Judging by their experience dealing with Kumogakure, once they helped Raikō Shōta kill Madara Uchiha, he and his people certainly would not pass up the chance to kill six powerful ninja from Konoha's Root.
If they died in the Capital of the Land of Lightning, Danzo would have no choice but to swallow the loss, however bitterly wronged he felt.
With that in mind, Yamanaka Fū had made an immediate decision and ordered the other five to withdraw with him.
Rather than cooperate with Kumogakure and its sinister intentions, Yamanaka Fū preferred to stage his own ambush outside the city.
If Kumogakure's forces killed Madara Uchiha, all the better. If they failed, his squad could simply lie in wait for an exhausted Madara and Guy to emerge.
