Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Genin-qualified child | 3 | At four years old, retains his previous life’s combat experience and talent. Fugaku considers him qualified to become a genin; this is an assessment, not a documented promotion. |
| Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan available | 32 | Privately tests Itachi’s eyes and confirms that he can activate the Sharingan and awaken the Mangekyō. The current body’s eyes particularly excel at genjutsu. |
| Chūnin | 50 111 | Promoted after defeating Lingchuan Ling in the Chūnin Exam final; later identified as having become a chūnin at eight. |
| Mangekyō combat deployment | 69 | Uses a blue skeletal Susanoo-like defense and Tsukuyomi against Arakawa Kiba. The victory leaves his left eye bleeding. |
| Complete Uchiha ninjutsu mastery | 87 | Reports that he has mastered all of the clan’s ninjutsu. |
| Flying Thunder God mastery | 88 | Understands the technique within half a day using his past-life insight, then teleports between marked weapons. Gains an alternative to eyesight-damaging Mangekyō techniques. |
| Jōnin | 97 111 153 | Undertakes difficult assassination missions during his assessment and is subsequently confirmed as a jōnin. Orochimaru identifies him as Konoha’s youngest jōnin. |
| Hashirama-cell enhancement | 159 | Assimilates transplanted cells within half a day. Gains physical strength and chakra, repairs Mangekyō eye damage, and can use the eyes without their previous limit. The transplant does not awaken the Rinnegan. |
| Fifth Hokage | 160 | Reaches Konoha’s highest leadership rank following Hiruzen’s death and the succession process. |
| Nature-energy absorption | 186 | Uses Hashirama cells to absorb stable nature energy directly, improving perception, speed, and strength without separately balancing the energy. |
| Sage-powered Susanoo | 187 | Channels gathered sage power into Susanoo, substantially increasing its strength and durability. His initially limited quantity of Hashirama cells makes absorption slow. |
| Giant Susanoo deployment | 227 | Breaks out of Chibaku Tensei with an enormous Susanoo and teleports it into striking range of Deva Path. |
| Rinnegan transplant | 238 | Recovers and implants the eyes previously placed in Nagato. Can conceal them as ordinary eyes and switch through Sharingan, Mangekyō, and Rinnegan forms. Gives Itachi’s original eyes to Sasuke. |
| Advanced nature-energy mastery | 295 | Easily breaks Edo Madara’s fist and attributes the difference in strength to mastering nature energy, not merely possessing Hashirama cells. |
| Sage of Six Paths | 302 | Absorbs the Demonic Statue’s power, gains white hair and Truth-Seeking Orbs, and forcibly enters the Sage of Six Paths’ mental space. His ocular power surpasses the Sage’s. |
Background / History
Madara’s previous life began in the Warring States Period, where he led the Uchiha Clan and received support from the Kōzuki family. After Tobirama killed his younger brother Izuna, Hashirama persuaded him to set aside his hatred. Madara and Hashirama subsequently founded Konoha 61 251.
Disillusioned with the village’s inability to secure lasting peace, Madara attempted to leave with his clansmen, but none followed him. In his new life, he reconsiders that rejection: rather than treating the clan as disloyal, he acknowledges that he had tried to sacrifice their hard-won stability for his own ambitions 64.
Black Zetsu’s alterations to the Uchiha stone tablet led him to believe that Infinite Tsukuyomi could end war. That plan ultimately enabled Kaguya to take over his body. Remembering both this deception and Naruto and Sasuke’s cooperation against Kaguya, he abandons the idea of achieving permanent peace through a solitary shortcut 58 295.
Reborn in Itachi’s body, Madara retains his experience but must rebuild his physical strength. Fugaku teaches him ninjutsu from an early age. His new family, Shisui’s companionship, and the renewed spectacle of children being sent to war give him personal reasons to protect the peace he once dismissed 3 4 5.
Identity and incarnations
| Identity | Distinction |
|---|---|
| Reborn Madara / Itachi / Hokage Madara | The protagonist: Madara’s consciousness inhabiting Itachi’s body, publicly known as Itachi and eventually becoming Fifth Hokage 3 160. |
| Edo Madara | A separate Madara brought back through Impure World Reincarnation. He later cooperates with Hokage Madara and fights him as part of their larger arrangement 237 250 294. |
| Obito’s “Madara” persona | An impersonation. Obito even attempts to recruit the reborn Madara while claiming to be the legendary Uchiha himself 111 230. |
Appearance
- Current body: Resembles Sasuke, but is older. As a child, his looks attract invitations from young Uchiha girls despite his aloof behavior 13 131.
- Intimidating presence: His expression and bearing frighten opponents and ordinary villagers, including Ino and her mother 49 94.
- Eyes: After the Rinnegan transplant, can display ordinary eyes, Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, or Rinnegan at will 238.
- Six Paths transformation: His hair turns white and Truth-Seeking Orbs appear around him 302.
Personality
Madara is proud, commanding, and unusually composed for his apparent age. He initially treats Shisui as someone who must prove himself worthy of becoming a follower. He likewise demands that young Uchiha earn their clan’s reputation through training and achievement rather than inherited eyes or boasts 3 30 32.
His political patience contrasts with his aggressive fighting style. He gathers information before committing to factions, tailors his arguments to Hiruzen, and prefers weakening Danzō gradually when immediate confrontation would threaten the clan. His ambition remains expansive: he intends to unite the shinobi world under one nation and eventually create a world without ninja 9 60 87 295.
Family affection softens his outward detachment. He cares for infant Sasuke, misses Shisui during wartime, and decides against manipulating Naruto after seeing the boy’s loneliness. He also rejects Root’s treatment of orphans as expendable tools, extending his protection beyond the Uchiha to Konoha as a whole 5 11 86 109.
That compassion does not prevent calculated cruelty. He controls useful captives with cursed seals and treats dangerous enemies as training opportunities for his protégés. Most starkly, he watches Sasuke’s group suffer against Ranmaru, refuses to intervene, and expresses satisfaction when Neji’s collapse triggers Sasuke’s Mangekyō awakening 121 192 207.

Precision and attack geometry compensate for his childhood body’s initially limited strength.
- Uses overlapping trajectories and a splitting Fūma Shuriken to force Shisui to activate his Sharingan 3.
- Corrects Shisui’s sword technique with more effective two-handed slashes 4.

- Protects him from his own flames and the Thunder God Shield’s lightning 103.
- Gains green threads and increased strength and durability when infused with sage power 187.
- Resists Animal Path’s multiplying dogs and breaks free of Chibaku Tensei 227.
- Can be moved with Flying Thunder God, allowing its enormous blade to strike from an unexpected position 227.
Flying Thunder God Technique
Madara learns Tobirama’s space-time technique from Hiruzen’s secret scroll.
- Uses marking formulas resembling the Uchiha crest on weapons 88.
- Teleports to marked kunai during attacks and bypasses conventional barriers and defensive formations 103.
- Places marks on Sasuke and Naruto to locate and reach them during the Forest of Death confrontation 131.
- Transports Minato to his underground experimental facility 261.
- Gives him a powerful combat option that does not require repeated Mangekyō use 88.
Hashirama cells and nature energy
Cell research becomes the foundation of his renewed physical power and sage abilities.
- Rapidly assimilates Hashirama cells, increasing strength and chakra while repairing his eyes 159.
- Absorbs stable nature energy through the cells without the balancing process described by Jiraiya 186.
- Initially gathers energy slowly because his body contains only a small quantity of the cells 187.
- Later develops sufficient mastery to physically overpower Edo Madara 295.
- Works with Orochimaru and Kabuto to improve Hashirama-cell applications, including Sasuke’s enhancement 238 262.
Rinnegan and Six Paths power
He restores his original eyes through transplantation rather than evolving Itachi’s eyes into the Rinnegan.
- Switches between ocular forms and retains the ability to conceal the Rinnegan 238.
- Controls and summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 261 295.
- Uses chakra-infused Black Rods with Sasuke to immobilize Hashirama 294.
- Gains Truth-Seeking Orbs upon returning to the Six Paths realm 302.
- Breaches the Sage of Six Paths’ mental space and demonstrates superior ocular power 302.
Seals, intelligence, and leadership
Madara builds influence through controlled information, capable followers, and institutional reform.
- Knows how to activate the cursed seal on Obito’s heart, though he reserves it as a contingency 111.
- Places control seals on Zabuza, Haku, and Orochimaru 121 154.
- Removes Orochimaru’s Five Elements Seal from Naruto 131.
- Uses Gato’s business records, company seal, and an impersonator to acquire economic influence 122.
- Delegates administration to Shikaku, security to Fugaku, and medical reform to Tsunade 170.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Rebuilding strength and preventing rebellion
After witnessing the Third Shinobi World War, Madara recognizes that Uchiha isolation could lead to the clan’s destruction. The Nine-Tails attack and forced relocation sharpen that concern. He proposes gaining influence within both Konoha and the clan rather than choosing an extreme faction immediately 5 9 11 12.
He builds authority among younger Uchiha through combat demonstrations, then persuades Hiruzen and Fugaku to communicate directly instead of allowing Root to shape their understanding of one another. His questions about governing after a coup convince Fugaku to abandon rebellion 30 32 52 53.
Military reputation and Root’s dismantling
His exam victory, protection of Shinhiko, and assassination missions establish him as a military asset and potential Hokage. Flying Thunder God mastery gives Hiruzen leverage abroad and makes Madara’s rise a direct challenge to Danzō’s position 50 69 79 93 97.
Madara secures the Police Force’s return to central Konoha, encouraging a stronger relationship between the Uchiha and ordinary villagers. After taking over Root, he ends its brutal training and brainwashing, integrates its orphans into the regular shinobi system, and requests that the Police Force recruit outside the clan 87 95 109.
Independent forces and Hokage succession
Alongside his public career, Madara retains former Root personnel and builds a covert network. In the Land of Waves, he subdues Zabuza and Haku and arranges the takeover of Gato’s company 121 122.
During the Konoha Crush, Hiruzen dies trusting Itachi to lead the village. Madara pursues Orochimaru but turns their confrontation into coerced cooperation. He subsequently reaches the Fifth Hokage’s office, strengthens himself with Hashirama cells, and negotiates a renewed alliance with Sunagakure 152 153 154 159 160.
Cultivating successors and confronting Akatsuki
As Hokage, Madara delegates domestic responsibilities and concentrates on external threats. He arranges field trials for Sasuke and Neji, seeking successors with judgment as well as strength, but permits extreme danger when he believes suffering will accelerate their development 170 181 187 192.
He treats Akatsuki as both an enemy and a resource for training Naruto and Sasuke. While they fight its members, he reserves its leader for himself. His defeat of Pain precedes the recovery of his Rinnegan and the transfer of Itachi’s eyes to Sasuke 196 207 227 238.
Edo Madara and the wider war
Kabuto introduces Edo Madara as leverage against Obito. The reanimated counterpart later operates within an arrangement with Hokage Madara, questions Black Zetsu’s motives, and deliberately places him in Sasuke’s path to be sealed 237 250 282 294.
Edo Madara’s attacks on Iwagakure and his battle alongside Hashirama provide formidable opposition for the new generation. Hokage Madara and Sasuke defeat Hashirama through coordinated spatial techniques; Hokage Madara then overpowers his reanimated counterpart 288 294 295.
Return to Six Paths power
With Naruto and Sasuke occupied elsewhere, Madara begins taking control of the Demonic Statue himself. He explicitly avoids repeating the mistake of absorbing the God Tree under Black Zetsu’s direction 295.
By the final documented chapter, he has destroyed Kaguya’s soul, examined her memory-bearing Kāma, and regained Six Paths power as Edo Madara’s body crumbles. The Sage of Six Paths recognizes that Madara has surpassed him and that his planned intervention is unnecessary 302.
