Akemi walked her father to the entrance of the Research Department. Partway there, she suddenly remembered something and said to Kazemori Masaki, "Oh, Father, Kana came back today. Mother and Grandma Toka are coming to our house to welcome her home. Will you be coming back?"

Kazemori Masaki paused. "No, I still have things to do. I probably won't have time."

"Really?" Akemi knew they were at war, and that as the village's highest leader, her father inevitably had to put all his mind and energy into his work. Still, the situation was not so dire that he needed to stay up all night. Surely he could find time to go home. She wondered whether he was avoiding something, since she knew a little about the circumstances herself.

"Yes, really." Kazemori Masaki could vaguely sense what his daughter was thinking. He had to admit that Akemi was right. Kana's feelings for him were not a secret to everyone. At the very least, those close to their family could tell.

Nothing had happened between them, and everyone else knew that perfectly well. Even so, unnecessary thoughts could still arise. When everyone had gathered in the past, the subtle tension had been noticeable. It was not exactly troubling, but it was a little awkward. Staying out of it was best. The women would have an easier time talking together without him there as the only man.

"I see." Akemi nodded thoughtfully. "All right, Father, go take care of your work. Mother, Grandma Toka, and I will welcome Kana in your place."

"Mm. Make sure you get some rest," Kazemori Masaki reminded her. Then he left the Research Department and headed toward the Hokage Office Building.
