Ch. 41The village hidden in the clouds
Summary
Kumogakure’s First Raikage, A, reflects on how he founded the village by following the example of Hashirama Senju. He respects Hashirama’s role in uniting the ninja world and establishing peace, but remains wary of Konoha as a powerful rival. Now aging and burdened by injuries from years of fighting, A believes he may soon die and has chosen his trusted bodyguard, Darui, as his successor.
Darui reports that the Land of Lightning’s Daimyo has rejected A’s request to delay an invasion of the Land of Fire. The powerful brothers Kinkaku and Ginkaku support the order, and their influence—combined with pressure from the village’s pro-war factions—leaves A little room to resist. Though he considers Kumogakure unprepared, with insufficient funds and unreliable jinchūriki, A decides to begin planning the campaign. He treats it as his final battle and resolves to prove the village’s value to its Daimyo.
Character developments and interactions
- A: Revealed as a pragmatic, dutiful leader who values strength and village unity. He admires Hashirama but sees the demands of political loyalty as overriding personal ideals. His acceptance of war is reluctant, shaped by duty and the belief that he is near the end of his life.
- Darui: A’s perceptive, trusted bodyguard and intended successor. He has contributed to Kumogakure’s military development, including innovative Lightning Release techniques, and has been training the village’s jinchūriki.
- A and Darui: Their conversation shows their close working relationship: Darui brings difficult news and offers a clear assessment of political pressure, while A trusts his judgment and looks to him as the village’s future leader.
- Kinkaku and Ginkaku: Their standing and support for the invasion constrain A’s authority, illustrating how military prestige and popular opinion can challenge a leader’s decisions.
Significant themes
- Duty versus personal will: A concludes that ninja leaders, like ninja themselves, must obey their employers’ commands, even when they would prefer otherwise.
- The cost of leadership: Founding and defending villages has left their first leaders injured, exhausted, or dead; A sees his own approaching death as part of that sacrifice.
- Peace and its fragility: The Five Kage Agreement has lasted only a year before political ambition threatens to undo it.
- Power and political leverage: Kumogakure’s dependence on its Daimyo, alongside the influence of formidable ninja, limits A’s ability to choose peace.
