Background / History

Madara’s heir and the founding Academy

Madara, who had no children, chose Kagami—his closest blood relative—as his successor. Kagami’s intelligence, temperament, talent, and strength earned him broad support within the Uchiha Clan. Madara also trained him in sickle combat, intending him to inherit the clan’s traditional sickle-and-gunbai fighting style 6 11 15.

Kagami entered Konoha’s founding Academy alongside thirty-seven other clan heirs and sat beside Kazemori Masaki. Tobirama selected him as a prospective disciple, with Hashirama agreeing that he was outstanding 6 10.

Madara’s departure endangered Kagami’s succession: rivals argued that being Madara’s chosen heir implicated him in the crisis. Kagami investigated the departure and reassured Tobirama that the clan remained committed to Konoha 12 13.

At the clan leaders’ meeting, Kagami publicly affirmed Uchiha loyalty to the village. Tobirama announced his discipleship, while Hashirama endorsed his eventual leadership. Kagami declined Hashirama’s proposed marriage to his youngest daughter because he was already engaged and was concerned about their age difference. Hashirama accepted the refusal and praised his integrity 13.

Clan leadership and village service

Kagami became clan head and remained loyal to Konoha despite Madara’s break with the village. When Madara returned to attack, Kagami still wanted to understand his motives, but received little acknowledgment from him 15 25.

After Madara’s defeat, Kagami gathered his ashes and joined the agreement to keep their recovery secret. He offered Uchiha land to help people displaced by the battle. His proposal to cremate Madara’s body unknowingly prevented the delayed Izanagi sealed in Madara’s eyes from reviving him 30 355.

During his Anbu service, Kagami studied genjutsu under Senju Toka. He continued seeking her advice after she retired from frontline duty to teach at the Academy. In the First Shinobi World War, Kagami and Danzō killed Monzaemon, Chiyo’s teacher, leaving Chiyo with a lasting grudge 286 287.

As leader of the Military Police Force, Kagami worked to integrate the Uchiha into village life. He informed Tobirama and Masaki about Setsuna’s hawkish faction, but later accepted Setsuna’s apparent reform as genuine 43 145.

Tetsuya’s death and the Hokage succession

Kagami led the response to the bombing that killed Tetsuya Uchiha, offered condolences to his son Ken, and promised to pursue the perpetrators. Unaware that Setsuna had orchestrated the murder, he welcomed Setsuna’s adoption of Ken as an opportunity to give the boy a home and raise a future pillar of the village 195 197.

He arranged a grand funeral for Tetsuya, the first Security Force Uchiha killed in the line of duty outside wartime, and secured his burial at the village’s Memorial Stone 197.

When Uchiha leaders urged him to contest the Hokage succession, Kagami refused: he considered Masaki better suited and respected Tobirama’s choice. He then challenged Hyuga Xiuching to a duel on the condition that Xiuching withdraw if defeated. Kagami won, removing the remaining challenge before Masaki received unanimous Jōnin approval as Third Hokage 220.

Setsuna’s betrayal

During the Second Shinobi World War, Kagami commanded forces against Sunagakure. Setsuna and Zetsu manipulated intelligence to draw him into an ambush, while Setsuna prepared to kill him if the enemy failed 286 348.

Kagami personally led a hundred elite ninja through a valley to attack the enemy’s rear. Sunagakure and Iwagakure forces ambushed them with a rockslide and poison, but lacked anyone strong enough to contain Kagami. He broke their advantage, although his unit suffered heavy casualties and poisoning 349 353.

Setsuna’s faction murdered the support force and turned on Kagami. While poisoned, Kagami combined a Shadow Clone, Fire Release, and the Gunbai’s converted Wind Release to create an explosion. He later trapped Setsuna with buried Explosive Tags; Zetsu immobilized Setsuna during his escape, leaving him mortally wounded. Kagami collapsed with grave injuries 349 354.

Meeting Madara between life and death

While unconscious, Kagami encountered Madara in the space between the living world and the Pure Land. Their conversation revealed Madara’s pursuit of flawless peace, his failed resurrection plan, and his growing doubts about his own judgment 354 355.

Madara staged a duel to test Kagami’s resolve, falsely claiming to prevent his return. Kagami defeated him through a combination of Toka’s genjutsu, Tobirama and Masaki’s sword techniques, and Uchiha weapon skills. Madara then shared his memories and entrusted the future to him before departing toward the Pure Land 357.

Kagami awakened in the medical tent and developed the Mangekyō Sharingan through his grief and newfound understanding of Madara. He also learned that his poisoned left arm had been amputated to save his life 358.

Recovery and renewed command

Kagami requested that Konoha detain Setsuna’s conspirators and put them on trial, authorizing village intervention in the clan’s internal affairs. Maki acted as clan head in his absence and helped organize the operation with Satomi and village officials 367.

After the poison was cleared, Kagami returned to command. He learned one-handed seals, revised his weapon style, accepted responsibility for the intelligence failures, and tightened operational secrecy. He then exaggerated the purge’s effects to make Sunagakure believe Konoha’s forces were weakened 370.

Keeping his Mangekyō secret as a trump card, Kagami helped reverse the battlefield situation. He eventually used Yomotsu to incapacitate Sunagakure ninja and severely weaken Ebizo, though the techniques nearly exhausted him 375 381.

Roshi, Son Gokū, and ancient history

Kagami volunteered to confront Roshi during an operation supporting Masaki’s research into natural energy and chakra. Roshi was captured, after which Kagami used his Mangekyō to enter the jinchūriki’s inner space and meet the Four-Tails, Son Gokū 401 405 408.

Rather than attempting to dominate Son Gokū, Kagami asked his name, acknowledged the Uchiha’s past wrongs, and described Konoha’s reforms. Son Gokū’s hostility softened enough for him to share information about the Sage of Six Paths’ mother, the “Rabbit Witch,” and her connection to the Ten-Tails 408.

Kagami reported these discoveries to Masaki. Their subsequent discussions connected Ken and Fujimura Yuki to Indra and Asura’s reincarnations and raised the possibility that someone had altered the Uchiha stone tablet to promote Infinite Tsukuyomi and Kaguya’s return 426 427.

Black Zetsu and the Daimyo conflict

After investigating the Totsuka Blade, Kagami accompanied Masaki to secure it. His Mangekyō could resonate with remnants connected to the realm of souls. During the expedition, he encountered unusually resilient Evil God Worshippers and destroyed their bodies to prevent another attack 475 479 480 481.

Masaki assigned Kagami to watch for Black Zetsu and seal him if possible. Kagami later accompanied the Hokage toward the capital, both to rescue Konoha’s shinobi and to carry out that secret mission 512 524.

When Katsuya fought Masaki, Kagami engaged him with Susanoo before switching targets. His Totsuka Blade pierced Black Zetsu and sealed him inside its genjutsu world, ending the hidden conspirator’s immediate threat 530.

During the ensuing war, Kagami fought alongside Hiruzen, Danzō, and Torifu against Katsuya. Prolonged Susanoo use temporarily cost him his sight, and Katsuya escaped the Totsuka Blade by sacrificing a stored soul in his place 554.

Kagami later recognized that his Underworld-based dōjutsu directly opposed Katsuya’s soul collection: where Katsuya imprisoned souls, Kagami’s power sent them onward toward reincarnation 563.

After Masaki killed Katsuya, Kagami detected signs of sealed Izanagi in the recovered eyes. Ken accepted that reclaiming his stolen eye was too dangerous, and Kagami burned both eyes to ashes. Kagami subsequently reported on the Daimyo settlement and negotiations with local lords to the Hokage Cabinet 565 567.

Appearance

  • Ordinary Sharingan: Blood-red eyes with three comma-shaped tomoe around each black pupil 11.
  • Mangekyō Sharingan: Intricate, interwoven patterns replacing the ordinary tomoe; no more specific design is provided 358.
  • Missing left arm: Amputated after Setsuna’s attack to stop the poison from killing him; his empty sleeve remains visible during recovery 358 370.

Personality

Kagami is humble, cheerful, and levelheaded rather than arrogant. His gentle disposition makes him well liked, but does not prevent him from making forceful decisions when the clan or village is threatened 6 354 357.

He places village unity above personal advancement. He refuses both a politically advantageous marriage that would break his engagement and his clan’s demand that he challenge Masaki for the Hokage position 13 220.

His faith in reform can leave him vulnerable to deception. He sincerely believes Setsuna has changed, but after the betrayal distinguishes his own misjudgment from the value of his ideals. He recommits to changing the clan rather than treating one failure as proof that change is impossible 145 193 354.

Kagami regards the Sharingan as both a means of survival and a product of tragedy. He supports psychological care for Uchiha, rejects the idea that they must inevitably become unstable, and refuses to pursue another person’s Mangekyō through unethical means 358 370 423.

His compassion extends to enemies without erasing their responsibility. He treats Roshi humanely while reminding him that Iwagakure invaded Konoha, and feels pity for the grief exposed by his genjutsu among Sunagakure’s soldiers 381 409.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

  • Specializes in genjutsu, with an ordinary Sharingan already at its complete three-tomoe form during his early training 11 349.
  • Perceives chakra circulation, including the unusual chakra accumulating inside Masaki 11.
  • Projects genjutsu over long distances; this capability becomes stronger after his Mangekyō awakening 375.
  • Cannot see through obstacles or underground. Sand, flames, and other visual obstructions can block its observational and genjutsu functions 354 377.

Non-ocular Genjutsu

  • Learned alternative genjutsu methods under Senju Toka, rather than relying exclusively on the Sharingan 287 357.
  • Uses close physical contact as a trigger and can incorporate that trigger into a Shadow Clone 357.
  • Combines illusion clones, ocular genjutsu, transformations, and weapon feints to create openings against highly experienced opponents 357.

Mangekyō Sharingan: Yomotsu

Yomotsu reproduces the road through the Underworld that Kagami experienced near death. Its illusion-based power is described as capable of rivaling Tsukuyomi 370.

  • Left eye: Creates the Underworld-themed mental illusion 370.
  • Right eye: Brings the illusion’s power into reality to inflict actual harm 370.
  • Cost: Heavy chakra consumption, bodily pain, and progressive damage to eyesight 370 381.
  • Observed limit: Sustained Mangekyō and Susanoo use temporarily blinds him during the battle with Katsuya 554.

Yomotsu: Underworld Mirror

  • Wide-area genjutsu that catches opponents looking at Kagami from different directions 381.
  • Shapes each victim’s experience through personal memories and regrets, often showing deceased loved ones 381.
  • Leaves affected Sunagakure ninja incapacitated and emotionally shaken even after the illusion ends 381.
  • Ebizo avoids being caught by the technique, requiring Kagami to attack him with Corpse Demon instead 381.

Yomotsu: Corpse Demon

  • Manifests an Underworld figure that attacks the target’s soul and drains vitality 381.
  • Severely weakens Ebizo during his attempted retreat 381.
  • Immobilizes Chakra Samurai, whose dulled minds make conventional mental attacks less useful 543.
  • Counters Katsuya’s soul-hoarding ability by sending collected souls onward toward reincarnation 563.
  • Brief use can nearly exhaust Kagami’s chakra and cause intense pain 381.

Susanoo

  • Produces a chakra construct capable of clashing with Katsuya’s Susanoo 530 554.
  • Protects allies against Katsuya’s Amaterasu 555.
  • Supports coordinated attacks using the Totsuka Blade 554.
  • Cannot match Katsuya’s endurance: Kagami’s eyesight deteriorates through use, while Katsuya’s evolved eye avoids that limitation 554.

Ninjutsu and One-handed Seals

  • Uses Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique; its power increases with his Mangekyō-enhanced chakra 370.
  • Employs Shadow Clones and the Transformation Technique in layered combat feints 354 357.
  • Has mastered additional chakra nature transformations as a Jōnin, although the supplied account does not identify all of them 286.
  • Forms one-handed seals faster than an ordinary observer can follow, preserving most of his seal-forming efficiency after amputation 370.
  • Losing an arm chiefly disrupts his taijutsu and former two-weapon style 370.

Weapon Combat

  • Trained by Madara in the Uchiha’s secret sickle techniques 11 357.
  • Incorporates sword techniques learned from Tobirama and Masaki 357.
  • Combines the Gunbai’s converted Wind Release with Fire Release to create powerful explosions 354.

Command and Intelligence

  • Personally leads dangerous operations, including the hundred-ninja surprise attack during the Second Shinobi World War 349.
  • Uses deliberate misinformation, restricted intelligence, revised ciphers, and defensive barriers to improve operational security 349 370.
  • Exploits enemy assumptions about his disability and Konoha’s purge to conceal a renewed counteroffensive 370 375.
  • Insists on reconnaissance and combined attacks rather than unsupported pursuit of opponents with unknown abilities 555.
  • Authenticates sensitive correspondence with distinctive Sharingan genjutsu recognizable to Maki 367.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Gunbai — Hereditary Uchiha Sage Tool that absorbs ninjutsu and converts it into Wind Release chakra for counterattacks. Kagami uses it in battle and to amplify his Fire Release 11 179 354.
  • Sickle and chain — Weapons used in the style Madara taught him. Losing his left arm prevents him from wielding the sickle and Gunbai simultaneously as before 357 370.
  • Explosive Tags — Buries them to trap Setsuna during their final confrontation 354.
  • Totsuka Blade — Legendary sealing blade secured during his expedition with Masaki. Seals pierced targets into its genjutsu world; successfully captures Black Zetsu, but Katsuya escapes by substituting a stored soul 479 481 530 554.

Relationships

  • Madara Uchiha — Uncle, adoptive father, mentor, and predecessor. Their final encounter allows Kagami to understand and forgive him before Madara entrusts him with his memories 6 355 357 358.
  • Tobirama Senju — Teacher and political supporter. His public acceptance of Kagami as a disciple reinforces Senju–Uchiha trust; Kagami later respects his choice of Masaki as successor 13 220.
  • Kazemori Masaki — Academy neighbor, fellow disciple, close friend, and Hokage. Their reform goals align, and they cooperate against Black Zetsu and Katsuya 6 354 530 565.
  • Hashirama Senju — Supports Kagami’s succession and accepts his refusal of a marriage alliance without withdrawing that support 13.
  • Maki Uchiha — Wife and mother of their two children. Acts as clan head while he is recovering and helps contain Setsuna’s faction 36 367.
  • Mizuki Uchiha — Elder child and daughter. Kagami worries about her safety and considers Sakumo a suitable husband, while recognizing that her wishes matter 367 401 524.
  • Senju Toka — Genjutsu instructor and continuing adviser whom he deeply respects 287 357.
  • Satomi — Long-standing family friend. Supports Maki during the crisis following Kagami’s near-fatal injury 183 367.
  • Uchiha Setsuna — Hawk-faction rival whose apparent reform deceives Kagami. Ultimately leaks intelligence, murders Konoha comrades, and attempts to assassinate him 43 145 349 354.
  • Uchiha Ken — Clan member Kagami hopes will become a village leader. Supports him after Katsuya steals his eye and explains why the recovered eyes must be destroyed 197 532 565.
  • Shimura Danzō — Fellow disciple and combat partner. Together kill Monzaemon; later Danzō urges Kagami to conserve his eyesight and accepts his warning against confronting Katsuya alone 286 554 555.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi and Torifu Akimichi — Fellow disciples who coordinate with Kagami against Katsuya 10 554.
  • Hatake Sakumo — Trusted subordinate and rising fighter. Kagami considers him a desirable son-in-law 375 401.
  • Son Gokū — Initially hostile tailed beast whose trust Kagami begins earning through humility and an account of Konoha’s reforms 408.
  • Katsuya Uchiha — Setsuna’s accomplice and later enemy. His soul-stealing Mangekyō abilities directly oppose Kagami’s Underworld-based powers 530 563.
  • Black Zetsu — Hidden conspirator Kagami seals with the Totsuka Blade during the capital confrontation 512 530.

Notable Quotes

“To be honest, perfection is far too hollow a concept. I don't believe true perfection can exist in this world.” 356

“Be sure to raise Ken well, so he can become a pillar of the village.” 197

“As commander, I cannot escape responsibility. We must never make the same mistake again, nor can we bear its consequences a second time.” 370

Trivia

  • Masaki remembers that Kagami would die at twenty-five in the original course of history. This is foreknowledge, not Kagami’s fate in the documented novel events 15 567.
  • Shisui Uchiha is identified as Kagami’s future direct descendant; the narration suggests his genjutsu talent may come from Kagami 287 349.
  • Kagami initially hopes the Mangekyō will never reappear in the clan because he associates it with a curse. He later awakens it near middle age, after developing greater emotional maturity 36 536.
  • He expresses interest in learning Sage power, but the supplied chapters do not document him attaining Sage Mode 401.
  • He accepts that he may never obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan rather than risk his comrades or preserve eyes capable of reviving Katsuya 565.
