Background / History
Relationship with Xiao Lie
Bai Lixi and Xiao Lie first became acquainted through rivalry, an argument, and a promised duel. Mutual assistance turned them into friends. A Passion Gu incident affected both men and led to intimacy; afterward, Xiao Lie offered to take responsibility, but Bai Lixi refused to marry without love. Xiao Lie stayed to care for him, and their attraction gradually developed into genuine affection. By their return to the Capital, they had been together for more than two years 44 45.
Xiao Lie met Bai Lixi’s clan elders and received his family’s approval. Their future plans included choosing a child from the tribe to become Bai Lixi’s disciple and their adopted heir 30 89.
Golden Silkworm Gu and Journey to the Capital
While living with Xiao Lie in a bamboo house, Bai Lixi successfully cultivated a twin pair of Golden Silkworm Gu. Each man implanted one through a cut on his wrist, creating a bond that allowed them to sense the other’s injuries and approximate location 30.
Bai Lixi wanted to meet Xiao Lie’s family but feared rejection. Xiao Lie promised to take him away if anyone mistreated him; Bai Lixi responded that he could support Xiao Lie in the Southern Border if necessary. They immediately packed and departed for the Capital 30.
After more than a month of travel, Bai Lixi nearly lost his nerve at the city gates. The imperial family’s welcome dispelled his fears: Princess Kangning took his hand without hesitation, and the family’s teasing soon made him laugh. The Empress Dowager already knew of him through Xiao Lie’s letters and valued her son’s happiness over convention 44 45 46 47.
Appearance
- Exceptional beauty: Xiao Lie describes him as extraordinarily beautiful, and Princess Kangning warmly praises his looks when they meet 45 46.
- Fair complexion: His face visibly reddens when Xiao Lie teases him about his bandaging 30.
- Southern Border clothing: His attire is distinctive enough for Shen Shixu to recognize his likely origin 60.
- Silver ornaments: He wears numerous ornaments on his head that jingle even with small movements 30.
- Coordinated outfits: He and Xiao Lie attend the Empress Dowager’s birthday banquet in clothes of matching style and color 94.
Personality
Bai Lixi is generally stern and not readily approachable. Others commonly avoid physical contact with him because of his gu arts, making Princess Kangning’s unhesitating welcome especially surprising. He is much warmer toward Shen Shixu, whom he likes for his unusual qualities and kindness, as well as out of consideration for Xiao Jinyi 46 60.
With Xiao Lie, he is affectionate, teasing, and easily flustered. He defensively insists that he likes his awkwardly tied bandages, yet keeps glancing back to gauge Xiao Lie’s response. He also checks his husband’s behavior, restraining him from charging at the Li cousins and later scolding him for an insensitive joke 30 59 173.
His concern for others takes practical forms: supplying medicine, recognizing a vulnerable boy’s potential, and arranging his rescue from a pleasure house. Although furious after being ambushed, he immediately turns his attention to Xiao Lie’s poisoning upon waking 59 128 132 134.
- Sweet tooth: He is particularly tempted by the pastries served during the spring outing 57.
- Enjoys gossip: After worrying that Shen Shixu’s system might expose his private affairs, he consoles himself that the officials’ secrets will eventually surface too—and that fresh gossip is more entertaining 98.
