Years ago, a horrific incident in Xinhu had been classified as taboo. It had taken a full ten years to erase its effects. Nearly a million people were said to have undergone Cerebral Surgery because of it, forgetting certain things.
The cheaters Director Li spoke of were people who had been involved in that taboo incident. Some had slipped through the Great Screening and avoided Cerebral Surgery, retaining memories that could not be made public.
"He probably isn't a cheater." Tang Qing pulled up Gao Ming's file. "He's a teacher at Xinhu No. 1 High School. He nearly died from severe injuries while saving his students. While he was unconscious and on the brink of death, the hospital used our latest technology to treat him. That was what saved his life."
"He's been treated with our technology?" Director Li raised an eyebrow. The way he looked at Gao Ming was completely different now.
"Yes. That's precisely why I moved him straight into today's batch. Normally, he might have had to wait another month for the test." Tang Qing wore a bitter smile. "But I never imagined things would turn out like this. I don't know what happened to him, either. I think his brain might be even more valuable for research than that murderer's."
"Severely injured and unconscious, on the brink of death several times, then miraculously awake after months in a coma." Director Li ordered the staff into the vehicle to start moving equipment. "Monitor this subject's physical condition at all times. He might have entered a middle-layer nightmare before."
Gao Ming's readings appeared on one monitor after another. He looked perfectly healthy, nothing like someone who had spent months in a coma.
"Tang Qing, stay here. Make protecting him your priority!"
"Understood."
The shadows tore the light apart
