Looking at the photographs of himself posted on the wall, staring at all those faces, A Fang was terrified. He buried his head in Gao Ming's arms and squeezed his eyes shut.
"Don't be afraid."
Gao Ming's heartbeat gave him a sense of security, like drumbeats from some distant era, carrying a certain power.
"We were once all pieces on Fate's chessboard. Compared to your brilliance, I must have been the most insignificant piece of all. But things are different now. I'll try to overturn the game, little by little."
A Fang could not understand what Gao Ming was saying. He did not want to face anything. He only wanted to escape this place and stay with his family.
When they emerged from the underground laboratory, more than half the medical staff in the hospital lobby were gone. Only a few actual patients remained, asking around in confusion.
Returning to the floor where A Fang's mother was staying, Gao Ming happened to see two caregivers injecting some sort of drug into the woman's body. They also fitted an airtight metal helmet over her head.
Seeing his mother being mistreated, A Fang broke free of Gao Ming like an enraged young beast and ran into the ward. The two caregivers had not expected him to return at that moment. They had merely received a sudden order to transfer the important patients.
"Thank you for your hard work. Leave the rest to me. I hope you have a good dream."
A low, muffled sound rang out, and the caregivers fell into nightmares. A Fang clumsily opened the metal covering around his mother's head. When he began to cry, wounds of all sizes were revealed inside his mouth.
Seeing her child hurt like this, yet being unable to do anything as his mother,
