After the hospital director had been treated into a deep coma, Doctor Gao became the backbone of Mortal World Entrance Hospital. Later, when the highly capable Doctor Bu left for another job, the hospital became a place where Doctor Gao's word was law.
He was friendly and approachable, kind and gentle. He treated his patients like family, and many voluntarily stayed to help after they recovered.
If Doctor Hao had not suddenly appeared, Mortal World Entrance might have felt more like home to Doctor Gao than the Strangled-to-Death Community did.
Standing before the containers holding the brains, Doctor Gao quietly admired them. The surfaces of the cerebral hemispheres had many winding grooves, called sulci, and the raised portions between them were called gyri. These sulci and gyri resembled a crumpled piece of silk, hiding countless secrets and making him want to reach out and smooth them flat.
But the brains in the jars were somewhat different from normal human brains.
Their prefrontal cortices, temporal lobes, and parietal lobes all showed abnormalities, as though they had been connected to some external object for a long time, or had suffered irreversible deformities caused by excessive medication.
"The prefrontal cortex is the brain's center of reason. If its function is impaired, it may be unable to filter out erroneous signals, causing internal imaginings to be mistaken for real experiences and resulting in schizophrenia. Abnormalities in the temporal lobe may trigger complex hallucinations, even hallucinations of past memories, while damage to the parietal lobe may disrupt the perception of the boundary between the body and the outside world."
"These brains labeled number two all share the same condition."
"I keep feeling that this number has some special meaning for me, too, but I can't remember."
"If the director weren't in a coma, he should
