The Forest within the city was a romantic Fantasyland, a refuge for many who wanted to escape reality. Soothed by the moonlight, they became trees, casting aside the troubles of the human world and rooting themselves in the soil. They lost their physical freedom and gained a kind of spiritual freedom.
The Forest had done nothing wrong. There were simply too many people in this city who wanted to become trees, causing it to expand too quickly. Densely packed "trees" pushed into areas where "people" lived and moved. Human faces bathed in moonlight rested peacefully beside windows, while limbs grew throughout the streets and alleys.
Standing in the Laboratory at the Ethics Research Institute, Doctor Gao and Banban watched the chaotic streets.
"Hurt and attack. If that's all people can do, letting the Forest cover the entire city and turning everyone into trees might be a form of civilizational evolution." Banban was frightened by people's madness. The Forest sweeping residents away had not scared the public; instead, it had sparked even greater fury.
"Evolve into a tree, then get eaten by your father?" Doctor Gao began checking the shared brain drugs in his backpack.
The Forest's expansion was halted at the outskirts of the Stomach Contents Community. Fires burned throughout the city, and black smoke gradually obscured the moonlight.
"Let's go. We'll take a look outside too."
Slipping on his backpack, Doctor Gao locked the Laboratory's door and took Banban toward Autopsy Avenue.
He had wanted to use this opportunity to go home, but unfortunately, there were too many police patrol cars and members of the Ethics Oversight Group along the way. They drove away everyone they saw and arrested anyone who refused to obey.
