Ning Shile had, after all, grown up traveling far and wide with his father through the business world. One look at Father Bai's intent gaze told him the man had serious business to discuss with Zheng Ye. Ning Shile knew when to make himself scarce, so he said goodbye to Zheng Ye and slipped away.
Chu Ran drove Ning Shile home. Ning Shile immediately dug out the priceless Five Scenes Painting and returned it to him at top speed.
After seeing Chu Ran off, Ning Shile stared at the closed front door for a few seconds before turning and going back to his room.
Over the past two days, he had vaguely sensed that something was wrong, as though this world had detected him as a bug and was trying to fix him.
Previously, every plot point in the novel had been crystal clear in his mind, as though etched into his brain and embedded in his bones. He had not even needed to think about them for those scenes to surface.
But over the past two days, that feeling had noticeably faded. There were already plenty of plot points he could no longer remember unless he deliberately tried.
Afraid that one day he might genuinely forget all of it, Ning Shile took out his phone, opened his notes app, and wrote down every plot point he could recall.
He went over everything concerning the Zheng Family several times in particular, terrified he might miss some detail.
When Ning Shile first agreed to a contract marriage with Zheng Ye, it had only been for those tens of millions. But things were different now.
Zheng Mother treated him very well, and Zheng Ye was wonderful too. As for Zheng Father... he was not a bad person either.
After spending these past days with the Zheng Family, Ning Shile had long since grown fond of them. Their spontaneous warmth and kindness were no act, and their efforts to help vulnerable people came from the heart.
They were not a family that could be summed up with the word "villains." They were real, flesh-and-blood people, vivid and alive, and so, so good!
I have to help them!
At the very least, I can't let them leave this world in such misery and disgrace.
The next day, Ning Shile was woken by his parents laughing and chatting.
He emerged from his room with a yawn, rubbed his eyes, and saw Zheng Ye sitting in the living room, with his father and mother on either side.
He had no idea what the three of them were talking about, but they kept bursting into laughter.
Ning Father and Ning Mother seemed not to notice Ning Shile at all. Only Zheng Ye nodded at him and explained, "I'm here to pick you up."
"Okay." Looking at his mother, Ning Shile could not help pursing his lips.
Mom! Enough! Keep staring and you'll start drooling!
Ning Mother was genuinely delighted with Zheng Ye. She stared at him without blinking, occasionally stroking his hair or patting his shoulder. She could not get enough of him.
Ning Shile shuddered, then turned to wash up and change in one seamless rush. Before Ning Mother could polish Zheng Ye to a shine with all her fussing, he pulled him out the door.
It was still morning when they arrived, and filming was underway for some supporting characters' scenes.
A staff member hurried out, bowing and scraping before Zheng Ye, apparently checking on the situation.
With nothing to do, Ning Shile looked around.
It was Jiang Jingyin's birthday, and quite a few fans had come to visit the set, bringing him small gifts.
Having built his career on playing up gay chemistry, Jiang Jingyin naturally would not pass up this opportunity. As he accepted his fans' gifts, he called toward the backstage area, "Li Xin! Are you busy?"
He raised his voice. "Can you help me carry some gifts?"
Li Xin was the second male lead in this drama, as well as Jiang Jingyin's shipped partner from his previous boys' love adaptation.
Li Xin was actually a veteran of the entertainment industry, having been in the business for over ten years. Unfortunately, his career had remained lukewarm until that last boys' love adaptation finally brought him some success.
Now that the two were working together again, plenty of fans of their pairing were thrilled.
But if I remember right, Li Xin is a completely straight guy who really hates playing up gay chemistry, isn't he?
Jiang Jingyin's doing all the fan service himself. How are the fans even shipping this?
Curious, Ning Shile took out his phone to learn more about their fans.
As expected of a man backed by a wealthy woman, Jiang Jingyin had birthday graphics plastered over Weibo's launch screen, complete with a matching trending hashtag.
#HappyBirthdayJiangJingyin!#
Ning Shile tapped the hashtag and entered the public feed. A live post popped up.
[Wanwan x: Aaaaaah! Jiang baby, could you be any more in love? Calling for Li right in front of your toxic solo stans—how is that any different from making it official?]
[Xiuxiu Pup: I'm dying. These two really are the ultimate ship in Chinese entertainment! Their fans are at each other's throats while the boys themselves are being lovey-dovey like nobody's watching!]
This... counts as lovey-dovey?
Ning Shile did not understand.
Li Xin had already emerged from backstage. His hair and makeup were not finished yet; he wore only a white inner robe, his hair tied up in a plain topknot without any adornments. He looked fresh and handsome.
Looking at the gifts and letters covering the ground, he asked, "Which ones do you want me to carry?"
Jiang Jingyin glanced over them and pointed to the pile of gifts from fans of their pairing. "These. Help me carry them."
Li Xin nodded and bent down to gather the gifts, ready to take them backstage.
Jiang Jingyin held a pair of dolls custom-made to look like him and Li Xin. They had probably been gifts from fans of their pairing.
Just as Li Xin picked everything up and was about to head backstage, Jiang Jingyin suddenly reached out and placed the dolls on top.
Li Xin nearly lost his grip.
Jiang Jingyin reached out to steady the gifts. "Careful."
Although he was steadying the gifts, his gaze was fixed on Li Xin. Jiang Jingyin's eyes were bright, the ends of his brows slightly lifted. When he looked at someone with that smile in his eyes, it was incredibly flirtatious.
Is he doing that on purpose?
Ning Shile was a little impressed by Jiang Jingyin. With skills like that, he really could make a ship popular single-handedly.
When he checked the Weibo feed again, it had already exploded.
The shippers were delighted with this bit of fan service and were squealing over every morsel.
[Jiangjiang's Little Simp: Aaaaaaaaaah!! Jiangjiang asked Mr. Li to carry the shippers' gifts backstage!! If that isn't acknowledging their relationship, what is?!!!]
Ning Shile shook his head.
Nope. Your Jiangjiang throws away those cheap gifts from shippers as soon as he gets back.
[LiJiang Is Real: That look in Jiangjiang's eyes!!! Who understands?!!! You can't hide love!! You can see it right in his eyes!!]
Ning Shile nodded.
True, that look was very well acted. He could compete for Best Actor.
Meanwhile, the toxic solo stans were also very pleased with Jiang Jingyin's behavior and flocked in to make snide comments.
[Steam Treatment: I seriously don't get what those shippers are getting off on. Jiangjiang obviously just didn't want to look at those things, okay?]
[Jiang Baby's Mommy: Exactly. Wasn't Jiangjiang obvious enough? He didn't even want to touch that stuff! Also, shippers flaunting their ship right in front of the actual people is honestly so annoying.]
[Mini Bunny: Just seeing Li Xin genuinely makes me a little sick. Have some shame at your age, old man, okay? Stop leeching off him!]
Ning Shile was honestly astounded. How could two groups of fans see completely different things in the exact same incident?
One side saw mortal enemies, while the other saw tender romance?
Damn it! Why can I only see juicy gossip?
"Come on." Having finished speaking with the staff member, Zheng Ye turned to Ning Shile. "Let's go in."
Ning Shile nodded.
He was about to turn off his phone when his finger tapped the screen. The feed refreshed, and a new post popped up.
[Mingming Wants the Tea: Why do I feel like I just saw the Breast Heroes ship here too?]
The Breast Heroes ship?
Ning Shile switched off his screen in distaste.
Who came up with such an awful ship name? There's no way it'll ever catch on!
