Over the next few days, Yan Wen focused on his studies. The next time Xiao Qi shared news about the company, Secretary Liu had already been taken away by the police, and the rival company was under investigation too.
Yan Wen was astonished. My dad is that amazing? He not only sent the mole to prison, but got their company investigated too.
I've detected that someone even more powerful intervened in this matter.
Who?
Their status is too high for the system to identify them for now, but I can confirm that they have a connection to you, host.
Yan Wen paused mid-bite. Me? When did I get to know someone that high up? Everyone around me is pretty ordinary.
I don't know about that. Maybe they don't want us to know.
Tang Yun placed his chicken drumstick in Yan Wen's bowl and asked with an ingratiating smile, "A Yan, could you do me a favor?"
Yan Wen raised an eyebrow slightly and put the drumstick back. "Just tell me what you need. Eat your drumstick yourself. I'm full."
"Then I'll eat it. Here's the thing: my youngest uncle is coming to Weicheng on business soon. My mom told me to show him around, but I don't know where the fun places are either."
"Got it. You want me to be your guide and recommend some places to visit."
Tang Yun nodded eagerly. "Yes, exactly! Ideally, you'd come along too, and we could all have fun together."
Yan Wen nodded. "Sure. Does your youngest uncle prefer scenic spots or places with lots of good food?"
"Quiet places."
Yan Wen: ...?
Half a month later, at the auction hall in the Fia Grand Hotel, Weicheng.
Everyone attending the auction belonged to a prominent wealthy family. Even the least influential among them had a net worth of over a hundred million.
Yan Wen's family sat in the first row on the left, filling all seven seats perfectly.
It was Yan Wen's first time in a place like this, and his mind was buzzing. Xiao Qi, what do you think they'll auction off? Will it be like what they show on TV? Should I bid on a few things to take home and play with?
Xiao Qi lounged with both hands behind the head and one leg crossed high over the other. Host, if we like it, we bid. We may not have anything else, but we've got money.
You're right. I'll buy a couple of things I like to play with later.
Listening to Yan Wen's mental chatter, Xie Yunshu reached over and stroked his head, then gave the other three children a meaningful look.
Mu Xu Ci and Mu Xu Xi made "OK" gestures. Mu Xu Ye showed no other reaction, but his grip on his bidding paddle tightened.
Yan Wen looked around the venue curiously. There were ten rows on each side, with seven seats per row.
A strikingly handsome man sat toward the left end of the first row on the right. His long legs were especially eye-catching.
Yan Wen sighed in admiration. To think such a handsome man exists in this world.
Hearing that, Mu Xu Ci hurriedly looked around. Who was it? Who could possibly be better-looking than him?
"Welcome to the auction at the Fia Grand Hotel. The auction will now begin!"
The presenter displayed the first lot: a hairpin belonging to an imperial consort from the Tang dynasty. The starting price was two million.
Yan Wen wasn't interested in it, but he was curious. Xiao Qi, that looks pretty authentic.
Xiao Qi leisurely swayed from side to side. Host, it isn't from the Tang dynasty, but it isn't exactly a fake either.
Then which dynasty is it from?
A Ming-dynasty imitation of a Tang piece.
Oh, then it still counts as an antique. It's almost four hundred years old.
A lady won the item for 3.7 million.
The second lot was a folding fan. The cranes painted on its surface were lifelike, and its frame was made of pure gold. The starting bid was three million.
Yan Wen's eyes lit up. That fan is beautiful. I like it. But why does it cost so much more than that hairpin?
Xiao Qi said, Because it really is made of pure gold, and it's an antique from the Qing dynasty.
Really? Then do you think I should bid on it?
Host, if we like it, we bid. We're not short on money.
As though he had made up his mind, Yan Wen was about to raise his hand when Mu Xu Xi beat him to it. "Five million."
A stir ran through the room. The fan clearly wasn't worth much, yet she was spending five million on it. The Mu Family's young lady really did have more money than sense.
Yan Wen looked at Mu Xu Xi in shock. What? Half my life savings gone with one bid! I've only got a little over ten million to my name!
As expected, Mu Xu Xi won the folding fan. As soon as it was handed to her, she passed it to Yan Wen. "Here. It's yours."
Utterly baffled, Yan Wen accepted it. "You don't want it? You paid five million for it."
"You kept looking at it, so I figured you liked it. I bought it for you to play with."
"Don't worry, Sis. I'll take good care of this fan."
Mu Xu Xi felt a rush of satisfaction. "Tell me what else you like. I'll buy it all for you."
Mu Xu Ci clicked his tongue. "Don't get carried away. If you buy everything, what am I supposed to buy?"
The man rested one elbow on the armrest, lightly propping the side of his head against his well-defined hand. His legs were crossed, his other hand held a bidding paddle, and he leaned slightly back in his chair. His deep eyes watched the items onstage without a trace of emotion, as though he had long since grown accustomed to such things.
The assistant beside him reported in a low voice, "Mr. Mo, the only item we're bidding on today is the eight-hundred-thousand-square-meter plot on the outskirts of Weicheng, near the entrance to Yan Jing."
Mo Chengzhou asked, "What lot number is it?"
"Number thirteen. It won't come up until the second half."
Mo Chengzhou gave a slight nod. His gaze swept over the auction attendees before finally settling on one person.
Yan Wen stroked the folding fan. It really lives up to its five-million price tag. The finish, the feel—I love it!
The next lot was a Yuan-dynasty blue-and-white porcelain vase, with a starting bid of two million.
Yan Wen's eyes lit up at the sight of the vase. I'll buy it for Mom to put flowers in!
Xiao Qi reminded him, Host, that vase is a reproduction. It's worth three hundred at most.
Yan Wen immediately lost interest. Then forget it. I'd be better off buying one at an antique shop. Sigh. If Tang Zi hadn't said he didn't like auctions, I would've dragged him along. This is getting boring. What should I do? Maybe I should sneak out.
Host, once the auction starts, you have to wait until it ends before leaving. You can't leave midway.
Then I'm doomed. How much longer is this going to take? Xiao Qi, can you magic me out of here?
You're asking too much of me. I'm just a system. I can't do magic!
Yan Wen clicked his tongue helplessly. Fine, then. What do you think Tang Zi's youngest uncle is like? Is he easy to get along with?
Xiao Qi covered a smile. Host, you've already met him!
Yan Wen sat up straight. When? How come I didn't know?
You were just admiring how handsome he was.
It's him?
Yan Wen slowly looked back in the same direction, only to meet Mo Chengzhou's deep eyes. Startled, he immediately looked away.
He's Tang Zi's youngest uncle? His uncle is that handsome and that young?
Host, he's only twenty-five this year. He's in the prime of his life.
After Yan Wen quickly turned his head back, the corners of Mo Chengzhou's mouth lifted in an almost imperceptible hint of a smile.
Before you continue
