Background / History
Arrival on the Dou Qi Continent
Bodhi dispersed his true body into countless soul fragments across the myriad worlds to avoid Sun Wukong. After becoming a Buddha, Wukong persistently searched for him; scattering his aura and abandoning a fixed location prevented Wukong from following his former traces. Bodhi describes the decision as seeking peace from a noisy disciple 2.
The Bodhi encountered by Xiao Yan is only one of those fragments. He explains that the Dou Qi Continent can accommodate merely a small portion of his soul’s power; bringing more into the world would rupture its shallow foundations. Xiao Yan’s ring attracts him because of its unusual ties of fate, rather than any exceptional quality in the object itself 2.
Accepting Xiao Yan
Bodhi emerges from the ring while Xiao Yan is trying to arrange help for Yao Lao. He immediately recognizes that Xiao Yan has two origins settled within one body, but allows him to explain when he is ready. Rather than accepting Xiao Yan’s request for immortality and divine abilities outright, Bodhi questions what he wants those powers for and directs him to visit his father 2.
After discovering Xiao Zhan’s concealed injuries, Xiao Yan asks for medical help before further cultivation instruction. Bodhi diagnoses obstructed meridians without damage to Xiao Zhan’s foundation and offers to begin with medicinal knowledge. He then accepts Xiao Yan’s tea and formal bows, acknowledging their affinity and Xiao Yan’s good character 3.
Supporting the Xiao Clan
Bodhi’s instruction develops from Xiao Yan’s personal cultivation into practical support for his family. He supplies healing formulas for Xiao Zhan, adapts a cheaper medicinal bath for clan guards, and teaches Xiao Yan to refine pills that help three long-serving clan members reach Dou Shi 11 12 17 18.
Before Xiao Yan leaves Wutan City, Bodhi helps three young clan members acquire a trace of wood attribute so they can begin learning alchemy. He later writes personalized Heaven Tier qi methods and accompanying Dou Techniques for Xiao Ding and Xiao Li 24 36.
During Xiao Yan’s travels, Bodhi remains concealed while providing instruction and advice. In Desert City, he acts through Xiao Yan to remove Hai Bodong’s Snake Seal Curse, enabling Hai to recover two-star Dou Emperor strength and honor a one-year protection agreement with Xiao Yan 29 31 38.
Appearance
- Hair and beard: White as frost 2.
- Clothing: A loose, plain robe and cloth shoes, without elaborate sleeve patterns 2.
- Bearing: Resembles an ordinary elderly mountain wanderer despite his overwhelming power 2.
- Manifestation: Appears and withdraws as a wisp of clear light; his visible form does not have the insubstantial appearance Xiao Yan expects of a soul body 2 3.
Personality
Bodhi is relaxed, perceptive, and fond of dry teasing. He notices Xiao Yan’s excuses, ambitions, and unspoken requests, often correcting them with a joke rather than a reprimand. His casual manner persists even when demonstrating soul-shaking lightning or removing a curse that has suppressed a Dou Emperor for years 2 4 5 38.
As a teacher, he values character, foundations, and independent understanding. He warns Xiao Yan against using cleverness on close kin, distinguishes guided pill-making from genuine alchemical expertise, and insists that learning a technique’s name or incantation does not confer mastery. He also leaves personal decisions to Xiao Yan while requiring him to accept their consequences 3 4 12 26.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Fragmentation and Power Restraint
- Dispersed his true body into countless soul fragments housed throughout different worlds 2.
- Scattered his aura to prevent Sun Wukong from tracking his former whereabouts 2.
- Limits the power present on the Dou Qi Continent because the world cannot withstand a larger portion of his soul 2.
- His actual cultivation realm is not established. Xiao Zhan’s estimate that he is “at least a Dou Wang” is speculation made without meeting him 25.
Concealment and Perception
- Renders himself and Xiao Yan’s conversation invisible and inaudible to people outside the room 2.
- Detects Ling Ying’s hidden observation and conceals his presence from the Dou Emperor, presenting only ordinary sights of Xiao Yan’s practice 8 9.
- Recognizes Xiao Yan’s two origins and perceives the ring’s unusual connections of fate 2.
- Alters Xiao Yan’s voice and masks his leaking Dou Qi to support his anonymous medicine-selling disguise 13.
Transformations and Environmental Control
- Turns a tea leaf into a lifelike green bird and restores it to its original form 4.
- Demonstrates substitution and escape with a leaf transformed into a miniature person, leaving a twig behind when struck 5.
- Produces steaming tea in an empty cup and suspends the room’s curtain while the surroundings grow still 2 3.
- Moves loose stones into a stove and kindles flames without firewood 11.
- Explains that the Seventy-Two Transformations within the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts are transformations of physical form, not the separate Seventy-Two Earthly Fiend Arts 5.
Divine Arts and Cultivation Instruction
| Art / Method | Instruction and limits |
|---|---|
| Thirty-Six Heavenly Dipper Arts | Xiao Yan’s chosen divine-ability path. Bodhi teaches progression from regulating qi, to commanding objects, to uniting the five elements within oneself with heaven and earth 4. |
| Seventy-Two Earthly Fiend Arts | Presented as an alternative with its own strengths; Bodhi rejects the assumption that it is inferior merely because of its name 4. |
| Nine Breaths of Qi | Teaches sensing and drawing in spiritual energy. Bodhi removes excess qi when Xiao Yan’s meridians cannot safely accommodate it 5. |
| Eight-Nine Arcane Arts | Recommends this foundation for sword combat, bodily resilience, and securing the soul. Combines it with Nine Breaths of Qi and limits early training to prevent exhaustion 6. |
| Great Grade Heavenly Immortal Art | Offers a path cultivating essence, qi, and spirit toward longevity; warns of recurring lightning, fire, and wind calamities requiring separate protective abilities 5. |
| Wind-Returning, Flame-Reversing | Teaches fire control for extracting medicinal liquids; explains that deeper mastery can turn hostile flames back on an enemy 11. |
| Foresee the Future | Teaches Xiao Yan to quiet his thoughts. Clear early visions depend on imminent danger; distant events remain beyond Xiao Yan’s current cultivation 21 22. |
| See Through Walls | Teaches the perception technique Xiao Yan uses to locate a vine-concealed cave 31. |
Command the Five Thunders
- Demonstrates a tiny lightning spark with five colors flowing through it; even this makes Xiao Yan’s soul instinctively shudder 4.
- Describes the Righteous Five Thunder Method as a direct counter to soul-seizing, spirit-capturing, and baleful soul-refining methods, including soul-binding chains and concealing restrictions 4.
- Teaches Xiao Yan the Thunder Condensation Method and cautions him to contain the power of his newly formed lightning 21.
- Explains that lightning can be directed through the Taiji Liangyi Sword, combining sword qi with thunder arts 7.
Swordsmanship
- Imparts the Origin Returning Sword Manual, beginning with gathering dispersed strength along the sword’s edge and releasing it through a focused strike 8.
- Teaches that the five elements and Heavenly Dipper Divine Powers can gradually be incorporated into sword moves 8.
- Emphasizes understanding wind, water, lightning, and natural principles rather than remaining confined to prescribed movements 8.
- Supervises target practice and demands precision, including avoiding damage to nearby flowers and grass 8 9.
Medicine and Alchemy
Bodhi devises formulas from ingredients available on the Dou Qi Continent rather than requiring medicines from his original world 10 12.
| Formula | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Azure Origin Body-Tempering Liquid | Nourishes Xiao Yan’s muscles and bones and relieves fatigue from body tempering and sword practice 10. |
| Revised guard medicinal bath | Cheaper, gentler adaptation for people who do not cultivate the Arcane Arts; supports recovery and more consistent training 17. |
| Origin-Restoring Meridian-Nourishing Pill | Second-rank healing pill that nourishes meridians and disperses stagnation; used for Xiao Zhan’s injuries 11 12. |
| Origin-Nourishing Spirit Liquid | Nourishes meridians and helps Dou Zhe and newly advanced Dou Shi absorb Heaven and Earth Qi 13. |
| Origin Condensation Pill | Third-rank pill that helps Nine-Star Dou Zhe condense Dou Qi and advance to Dou Shi 17 18. |
| Profound Origin Pill | Third-grade formula adjusted for Xiao Zhan, providing gentle, lasting support for his meridians and Dou Qi accumulation 22. |
- Identifies affordable mountain plants that can substitute for costly purchased ingredients 10.
- Warns that accelerated plant growth does not create corresponding medicinal age and can exhaust the soil 4.
- Creates Low-grade Heaven Tier qi methods and accompanying Dou Techniques tailored to Xiao Ding and Xiao Li’s attributes and fighting styles 36.
Curse Removal
- Channels his own precise energy through Xiao Yan to separate Hai Bodong’s Snake Seal Curse from Hai’s Dou Qi 38.
- Removes the restriction without damaging Hai and contains the release of cold energy 38.
- Accomplishes the cure without the Sixth-Rank Barrier-Breaking Pill Hai had sought; Hai recovers two-star rather than his former five-star Dou Emperor strength because the toll of the intervening years remains 38.
