Ampharos had high Special Attack, and Electric-type attacks were super effective against Water-types. The lightning dragon formed by Thunder quickly overwhelmed Tentacruel's attack.
After breaking through Tentacruel's attack, the lightning dragon hurtled into Tentacruel with its remaining power.
Thunder was far more powerful than Thunderbolt. With both the same-type attack bonus and a type advantage, it knocked Tentacruel out in a single hit.
Seeing that Tentacruel could no longer battle, Zhang Cheng quickly threw the Poké Ball he had prepared.

Zhang Cheng turned to look and saw two Tentacruel approaching from the middle reaches of the river. Seeing that their companion had been caught, they attacked Zhang Cheng directly.
"Ampharos, great job!" Zhang Cheng was delighted with Ampharos's response and readily praised it.

Ampharos was happy to receive its Trainer's praise and answered Zhang Cheng excitedly.
"Since you've come to me, you've saved me the trouble of finding you." Watching the menacing Tentacruel prepare to attack again, Zhang Cheng brought out all four of his Pokémon.
"Poliwrath, Pidgeot, Swampert, let's attack together!"
Zhang Cheng sent out all his Pokémon to gang up on Tentacruel. Without tournament rules restricting him, he wasn't foolish enough to choose a one-on-one fight. If he could gang up on an opponent, he would.
