Whatever move Seismitoad used to attack, he would have Poliwrath respond in kind. Poliwrath had a certain advantage in typing.

A Pokémon hit by Supersonic would suffer a status condition, something Zhang Cheng certainly couldn't accept. Using Protect to neutralize it was the best choice.

A transparent barrier instantly appeared in front of Poliwrath, blocking the incoming sound waves.
