Background / History
Zhang Cheng selects Poliwag after discovering an unusually promising Egg with B+ potential and the Hidden Ability Swift Swim. He purchases it for a discounted 190,000 Pokémon Coins, intending to raise it into a Politoed whose Drizzle can anchor a Rain Team. When Poliwag hatches seven days later, he immediately nuzzles Zhang Cheng and regards him as a parent 3.
Their early routine combines play, running, move practice, baths, massages, and Pokéblock rewards. Zhang Cheng initially avoids formal training, then begins preparing Poliwag for League assignments as food and money run low. His limited offense and vulnerability to Grass types influence Zhang Cheng’s decision to add Pidgey to the team 4 5 8 10.
Before the doubles tournament semifinals, Zhang Cheng worries that Poliwhirl needs immediate improvement. A Water Stone evolution offers stronger combat capabilities but threatens his intended Drizzle strategy. The system’s Bond Phenomenon resolves the dilemma: Poliwhirl becomes able to switch between Poliwrath and Politoed, with both initially recorded at A+ potential. The transformation also gives Zhang Cheng an unmistakable new sense of connection with his partner 153.
Appearance
- Poliwag: A small, round hatchling with a tail and a distinctive spiral pattern on his belly 3.
- Poliwhirl: Develops pronounced muscles; can move on land but swims faster in water 92.
- Poliwrath: Taller and stronger than Poliwhirl, with a powerfully muscular body suited to swimming and Fighting-type techniques 153.
- Politoed: His alternate evolution appears as a round, green frog 153.
Personality
Poliwrath begins as a cheerful, affectionate, outgoing Poliwag. He enjoys television, food, and especially Pokéblocks, which become a reliable training incentive. He eagerly chats with the initially aloof Pidgey and later offers Mareep food, demonstrating an interest in welcoming new teammates 3 4 10 12 50.
He is hardworking but can become disappointed after poor performance or defeat. Zhang Cheng’s reassurance restores his confidence, and he often asks to continue practicing even after a full training session. Their long partnership eventually lets him anticipate commands, including preparing Hypnosis as Zhang Cheng gives the order 4 8 276.
As Poliwrath, he particularly enjoys direct contests against other Fighting-type Pokémon. He trusts Zhang Cheng enough to endure repeated attacks while setting up a counter, and adversity strengthens rather than extinguishes his fighting spirit 265 378 414.
Abilities & Skills
Bond Phenomenon
- Allows free switching between Poliwrath and Politoed, preserving access to both direct combat and rain-setting roles 153.
- Poliwrath provides Water/Fighting typing and stronger physical capabilities; Politoed provides Water typing and Drizzle 153.
- Raises both forms’ potential from B+ to A+ when first applied 153.
- The system promises Mega Evolution access, but it is not yet available when the reward is introduced 153.
Rain Dance and Swift Swim
- Rain Dance strengthens Water-type attacks, weakens Fire-type attacks, and activates Swift Swim 262.
- Swift Swim doubles his Speed in rain or heavy rain, improving movement, evasion, and attack timing 3 381.
- Rain-assisted speed lets him evade Wigglytuff’s Toxic and Sweet Kiss and interrupt Blaziken with Waterfall 262 275.
- The advantage is not absolute: Floatzel remains faster in rain, while Gastro Acid suppresses Swift Swim entirely 283 313.
- Rain can benefit opponents too, notably Ludicolo’s Rain Dish and Seismitoad’s Swift Swim 192 193 413.
Fighting-Type Combat and Physical Boosts
- Dynamic Punch: His signature Fighting-type attack; a successful hit inflicts confusion, disrupting opponents’ attacks and defenses 193 265 447.
- Submission: Grabs the opponent and rolls violently with it. Sustained pressure can break a weakened Protect barrier, as demonstrated against Samurott 240 244.
- Bulk Up: Raises Attack and Defense. He stacks it while opponents sleep or while enduring predictable physical attacks 265 276 379.
- Swords Dance: Used to strengthen his Fighting-type offense against Clawitzer, at the cost of taking Dragon Pulse during setup 446.
- Other documented Fighting moves: Circle Throw, Wake-Up Slap, Focus Blast, Low Sweep, and Double Kick 136 153 293 300 447.
Water-Type Offense
- Water Gun and Bubble Beam: His foundational attacks; repeated practice improves Water Gun’s power and accuracy before Bubble Beam is developed through demonstrations and tutorials 4 5 10.
- Waterfall: A full-body charge enveloped in Water energy; frequently strengthened by rain, held items, or physical boosts 161 243 277.
- Hydro Pump: Provides powerful ranged offense, including a means of attacking Steelix without relying on physical strength against its high Defense 300 324.
- Hydro Cannon: A compressed Water attack that defeats Girafarig and shatters Seismitoad’s Protect. Its recovery interval leaves him briefly unable to move 413 414.
- Scald: Adds burn pressure; burns Espeon and is selected against Chesnaught for its secondary effect rather than raw damage 263 287.
- Other documented Water moves: Bubble, Surf, and Water Pulse 300 313.
Sleep, Accuracy, and Low-Health Counters
- Hypnosis: Puts opponents to sleep, creating opportunities to establish rain, boost stats, or attack 92 192 276.
- Mind Reader: Makes the next attack reliably hit; commonly paired with Hypnosis. It cannot be used repeatedly without limit, and Protect can still block the follow-up 10 92 118 293.
- Endeavor: Reduces the opponent’s HP to match his own, making it especially dangerous when he is near defeat 9 265 381.
- Endeavor requires a successful hit: Detect and Protect repeatedly foil it, and being critically injured leaves him vulnerable before he can connect 9 147 266 381.
- Perish Song: First recorded upon becoming Politoed, but later explicitly used as Poliwrath against Bellossom. It forces a switch or causes the affected opponent to faint after three turns 153 166 167.
Defense and Coverage
- Protect: Forms a transparent barrier; by his battle with Qin Yi, he can construct it almost instantly 367.
- Protect can break under sufficiently powerful attacks, and Phantom Force can bypass it outright 255 272 381 450.
- Ice Beam: Supplies Ice-type coverage, though its use against Breloom proves much less effective than Breloom’s returning Energy Ball 153 240 241.
- Ground-type options: Mud Shot, Mud Bomb, and Bulldoze; Mud Bomb is used to exploit Electrode’s Ground weakness 153 270 300.
- Additional recorded moves: Water Sport, Double Slap, Body Slam, Belly Drum, and Rock Slide 300.
- Water Sport reduces Fire-type damage for five turns; Body Slam is used to stop Beedrill from laying a second layer of Toxic Spikes 4 192.
Thief
- Learns Thief through a Technical Machine and develops it through practice 24.
- Steals a wild Poochyena’s Nugget, creating a valuable source of income 57.
- Removes opponents’ held items during battle, including Mystic Water from Wartortle and Samurott, weakening their Water attacks while strengthening his own 161 243.
- Items stolen during Trainer battles must be returned afterward 24.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mystic Water — Boosts Water-type moves. He uses stolen Mystic Water during battles against Dewott and Samurott 161 243.
- Black Belt — Strengthens Fighting-type moves; supports Dynamic Punch against Floatzel and Mega Lucario and appears in his Level 59 scan 283 300 378.
- Damp Rock — Held in Politoed form to extend rainy weather 424.
Relationships
- Zhang Cheng — Trainer and parent-like figure from hatching. Their bond develops through daily care, encouragement, battle experience, and the Bond Phenomenon 3 4 153 413.
- Pidgey / Pidgeotto / Pidgeot — Longtime teammate. Poliwag welcomes her enthusiastically, and the pair are later found sleeping together; Pidgeot often takes over unfavorable Grass-type matchups 12 24 193 241.
- Mareep / Ampharos — Teammate whom Poliwag helps persuade to approach Zhang Cheng and introduces to Pokémon food. Ampharos later weakens Mega Lucario before Poliwrath finishes it 46 50 378.
- Machop / Machoke — Recurring sparring partner. Poliwag defeats Machop despite a level disadvantage and helps encourage him to accept Zhang Cheng’s Pokéblock gift 59 136.
- Swampert — Fellow Water-type teammate; they cooperate against Drapion. Swampert also replaces Poliwrath against dangerous Electric-type opponents 234 244 294.
- Ye Tian’s Butterfree — Frequent opponent and occasional doubles ally. Battles with her include Poliwhirl’s first evolution, successful Endeavor tactics, and later defeats when she anticipates those tactics 24 92 118 182 381.
- Xiao Wei’s Cloyster — Doubles partner; coordinated pressure from Cloyster and Poliwrath defeats Dewott 161.
