Background / History
High-school training
Ye Tian is Zhang Cheng’s high-school deskmate and an established friend when he first contacts him near the end of summer vacation. His first Pokémon is Caterpie, which he has already evolved into Butterfree by their reunion. Zhang Cheng initially understands Ye Tian’s family to be relatively short of money and considers Caterpie a practical starter choice 14.
Their first documented battle ends in a draw between Ye Tian’s level-10 Butterfree and Zhang Cheng’s level-6 Pidgey. The result teaches Ye Tian that a favorable type matchup can offset a substantial level difference 15.
After entering Elite Class Two, Ye Tian continues eating and training with Zhang Cheng despite their separate class assignments. He expands his team with Heracross from the principal’s Safari Zone and later chooses Treecko through a school-sponsored Pokémon Day Care promotion 22 48 90 91.
Field training and concealed support
Determined to grow faster, Ye Tian requests permission from Liu Feng to leave school for field training despite warnings about the danger. In Magnolia Forest, his Butterfree and Heracross become stronger, and he gains practical experience directing them 107 114.
A masked man riding Drapion delivers a backpack containing a Poké Ball, a Magnetic Card, and a letter. Ye Tian later refuses to explain where his Zweilous came from. The masked man is eventually identified as Su Jun, an R Organization core member who supplied Ye Tian with the Hydreigon Pokémon Egg 114 122 476.
University competition
Ye Tian earns Elite Trainer certification before the college entrance exam and defeats both of his practical examiner’s Pokémon for full marks. He chooses Kyoto University, while Zhang Cheng chooses Modu University, ending their routine school-day training partnership 200 205 207.
He later returns as Kyoto University’s strongest visiting challenger to Modu University. Their first six-on-six battle ends in another defeat for Ye Tian, who promises to challenge Zhang Cheng again at the following year’s Intercollegiate League 299 310.
During the National University Tournament, Ye Tian defeats Liao Wu and reaches the grand final against Zhang Cheng. He again loses, leaving the arena before Zhang Cheng can approach him 344 376 389.
R Organization exposure and final battle
Following the national final, League officers detain Ye Tian. His Aegislash draws suspicion because the species has only been found on Ghost Island, which the R Organization occupies. Su Jun kills the two escorting officers and escapes with Ye Tian through Alakazam’s Teleport; Ye Tian subsequently becomes unreachable after leaving Huaxia 389 476.
Bai Yuling later reveals that Ye Tian’s father, Ye Jun, is an R Organization leader. During the League assault on God-Burial Mountain, Ye Tian commands the organization’s defense while his father battles Zhang Zhi. He then challenges Zhang Cheng to a final six-on-six duel, driven by his determination to defeat his longtime rival 508 509.
Ye Tian loses when Regigigas falls to Light of Ruin. The League takes him and Ye Jun into custody after the organization’s defeat. Zhang Cheng and Zhang Zhi later help secure their release, but the grievances between the two families remain unresolved 516.
Personality
Ye Tian is outgoing, talkative, and difficult to embarrass. His classmates’ disapproval does not unsettle him, and he frequently teases Zhang Cheng about Bai Yuling. Zhang Cheng considers him more mature than most of their peers and values him as a compatible friend 16 22 23 32.
He is strongly attached to home. The prospect of spending months at boarding school initially depresses him, but he accepts that he needs to become independent. He is also openly enthusiastic about financial rewards, at one point focusing on prize money while classmates worry about losing their homeroom teacher 15 16 37.
As a Trainer, he combines ambition with practical judgment: he waits for a suitable second Pokémon, chooses useful TMs within his budget, and recognizes the need to balance training with rest. He also encourages defeated partners and helps Heracross confront its fear of Flying-type Pokémon 21 37 67 91 119.
His confidence can become arrogance, though he initially accepts correction and defeat without resentment. Over time, his wish to surpass Zhang Cheng develops into a deep obsession. By their final confrontation, he has assembled Legendary Pokémon specifically to beat him and cannot accept the eventual loss 81 122 376 509 511 516.
