Background / History
Zhang Cheng discovers Poliwag’s Egg on the last row of a Pokémon Day Care shelf. His scanning ability reveals unusually promising potential, useful inherited moves, and Swift Swim. Recognizing that this Ability could eventually become Drizzle upon evolution into Politoed, Zhang chooses him as the starting point for a future Rain Team. The Egg costs 190,000 Pokémon Coins after a discount, reduced from its listed price of 230,000, and comes with an incubation kit 3.
Poliwag hatches seven days later and immediately nuzzles Zhang, regarding the first person he sees as his parent. Zhang feeds him his nutritious eggshell and Water-type Pokémon Food. During his first week, they run and play together rather than undertake formal move training; afterward, dwindling supplies push Zhang to prepare him for paid League assignments 3 4.
As the team expands, Poliwag remains its main fighting force. In Magnolia Forest, Zhang assigns him opponents above Level 10 and has him guard Mareep and Pidgey while they train against weaker wild Pokémon. Battles against Spearow, Poochyena, and the waterfall-dwelling Machop develop his practical experience; Machop subsequently becomes a regular sparring partner 56 57 58 59 65.
Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl at Level 16 during a battle against Ye Tian’s Butterfree. Poison and repeated interruptions have left him close to defeat, but the evolution strengthens him enough to complete Mind Reader and Hypnosis, restore rain, and reverse the match. Zhang later broadens his coverage with Waterfall, Protect, and an Ice Beam Technical Machine 92 97 107.
Before the Double Battle Tournament semifinals, Zhang considers evolving Poliwhirl with a Water Stone to improve his immediate combat strength. He hesitates because choosing Poliwrath would ordinarily prevent the Politoed evolution needed for Drizzle, and he lacks a King’s Rock. The system answers his request for additional support with a Bond Phenomenon reward, which Zhang assigns to Poliwhirl. The reward permits free switching between Poliwrath and Politoed and raises both forms’ documented potential to A+, eliminating the need to choose between Fighting-type strength and automatic rain support 153.
He remains one of Zhang’s trusted longtime partners through later tournaments, assessments, wilderness missions, and Champion-level competition. During the battle against Du Ling, Zhang explicitly credits Poliwrath’s strength to their long history together. A subsequent battle with Yuwen Tian confirms that the Politoed transformation remains available at Level 74 216 234 413 415 424.
Appearance
- Build: Small and round when newly hatched, with a tail 3.
- Distinguishing feature: A spiral pattern on his belly 3 5 30.
- Early growth: Becomes slightly larger during his first week of life 4.
- Poliwhirl form: Develops a muscular body capable of moving on land, although he swims faster in water 92 97.
- Poliwrath form: Taller and stronger than Poliwhirl, with powerful muscles suited to swimming and Fighting-type techniques 153 300.
- Politoed form: Appears as a round, green frog after switching forms 153.
Personality
Poliwag is cheerful, affectionate, and outgoing. He nuzzles Zhang soon after hatching, enjoys physical care, and eagerly talks to new teammates. When Pidgey initially responds with aloofness, he continues chatting without becoming impatient. He later welcomes the newly hatched Mareep and tries to share his own food with it 3 5 12 50.
He is competitive and sensitive to his Trainer’s expectations. Weak early Water Gun attempts and his loss to Snivy leave him disappointed in himself, but Zhang’s encouragement restores his motivation. He sometimes asks to continue training even after a full session. Pokéblocks are a particularly effective reward, while television dramas, anime, and Pokémon programs hold his attention outside training 4 8 10.
His later battles emphasize resilience and complete trust in Zhang. Against Azumarill, he follows repeated Bulk Up commands while enduring super-effective Play Rough attacks, trusting the eventual Endeavor counterattack. He also develops a particular enthusiasm for direct contests against other Fighting-type Pokémon, eagerly confronting Mega Lucario. Adversity intensifies his fighting spirit rather than making him retreat, as demonstrated when he continues attacking Seismitoad despite worsening poison 265 378 414.
His friendliness also extends to training opponents. He helps persuade Machop to accept Zhang’s gift of Fighting-type Pokéblocks, reinforcing the goodwill established through their sparring 59.
Abilities & Skills
Swift Swim
His Hidden Ability doubles his Speed in rain or heavy rain 3 30.
- Supports Zhang’s long-term weather-based team strategy.
- Zhang initially expects it to become Drizzle if Poliwag evolves into Politoed. This is realized through his Politoed transformation, while his Poliwhirl and Poliwrath forms retain Swift Swim 3 8 92 153.
- Rain Dance eventually allows him to activate the Ability without relying on another Pokémon’s weather support 80 83.
- Enables Poliwrath to interrupt Blaziken’s follow-up attack with a decisive Waterfall and evade Wigglytuff’s Toxic and Sweet Kiss 262 275.
- Can be suppressed by Gastro Acid. Victreebel’s attack passes through Protect and removes his rain-based speed advantage 313.
- Does not guarantee evasion if an attack arrives during setup: Butterfree’s Sleep Powder reaches him just as rain activates Swift Swim 381.
Bond Phenomenon and Dual Evolution
A system reward assigned exclusively to Poliwhirl allows him to switch freely between his two final evolved forms 153.
| Form | Type | Ability | Strategic role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poliwrath | Water/Fighting | Swift Swim | Direct combat using muscular strength, Fighting-type moves, and rain-enhanced speed 153 262 378. |
| Politoed | Water | Drizzle | Establishes rain automatically on entering battle and supports Zhang’s Rain Team 153 424. |
- The first successful transformations occur at Level 27 and list A+ potential for both forms 153.
- Zhang feels an intensified connection with his Pokémon when the reward activates 153.
- The system states that the reward also enables Mega Evolution, but that capability is not yet available at the initial dual evolution. The supplied later passages do not document a Mega Evolution by this Pokémon 153.
- Switching changes his typing, moves, and other attributes; this remains explicitly documented when he becomes Politoed at Level 74 424.
Drizzle
Politoed’s Ability creates rain when he enters battle, fulfilling the weather-support role Zhang envisioned when purchasing the Egg 3 153 424.
- The initial explanation gives a duration of five turns, extended to eight turns with a Damp Rock 3.
- The Ability fails under heavy rain, harsh sunlight, or turbulent winds. When multiple weather-setting Abilities activate simultaneously, their order follows Speed, with the later effect overriding the earlier weather 3.
- His Level 74 Politoed profile confirms that he holds a Damp Rock 424.
Speed and Battle Experience
Speed is Poliwag’s standout stat, with a documented base Speed of 90. His Attack and HP are comparatively low in this early form 7.
- Outspeeds Charmander, allowing Water Sport to activate before its Ember lands 7.
- Fires the decisive Water Gun before Oshawott’s Brine in their first battle 9.
- Learns to interrupt his offense and dodge dangerous close-range attacks, demonstrated against Krabby’s Vise Grip 36.
- Remains vulnerable to Grass- and Electric-type opponents; Snivy’s Magical Leaf defeats him early in his training 8.
- Evolution into Poliwrath gives him stronger physical capabilities and Fighting-type coverage, but also exposes him to opponents’ super-effective Fairy-, Flying-, and Psychic-type attacks 153 243 265 381 413.
- Later demonstrates close coordination with Zhang, anticipating Hypnosis before the command is fully delivered and beginning Protect instinctively during the Butterfree battle 276 381.
- Rain can also benefit opponents. Ludicolo’s Rain Dish sustains it against him, while Floatzel and Seismitoad possess their own Swift Swim 192 193 283 413.
Water Gun
His first practical attacking move, with a stated power of 40 4 5.
- Develops from a weak, inaccurate stream into an attack capable of breaking a thin tree trunk 4 5.
- Moving-target practice raises his accuracy to roughly half of the airborne roof tiles Zhang throws; Zhang then considers the move mastered 10.
- Retains value as a quick attack when there is insufficient time to prepare Bubble Beam 44.
- Finishes Machop after Endeavor brings the stronger opponent close to defeat 59.
Water Sport
Covers the battlefield with water, reducing Fire-type damage by 50% for five turns 4 7.
- Quickly learned during his first formal training session 4.
- Combines with his natural Fire resistance to blunt Charmander’s Blaze-enhanced Ember 7.
- Offers little help against opponents that do not rely on Fire-type attacks 5 7.
- Remains useful later in his Poliwag stage, allowing him to withstand Houndour’s Ember with little meaningful damage 76.
Bubble Beam
An Egg Move with a stated power of 65 and a chance to lower the opponent’s Speed 4.
- Initially learned through a video demonstration and online tutorial; its first attempts are weaker than his practiced Water Gun 10.
- Becomes his primary attack after repeated orchard battles 11.
- Can disrupt an opponent’s approach, as shown when it stops Tepig’s Flame Charge 44.
- Its slowing effect activates against the male Poochyena, helping create the opening for Thief 57.
- Retained in the move profiles of both final evolved forms 153 300 424.
Mind Reader
An Egg Move that ensures his next attack hits the opponent 4 10.
- Makes every tested Water Gun hit its moving target 10.
- Secures Endeavor against Altaria and the finishing Bubble Beam against Tepig 31 44.
- Cannot be used repeatedly without limitation; repeated activation can fail 10.
- Becomes an important partner to Hypnosis, securing sleep against Axew, Butterfree, Onix, and Skarmory 83 92 97 124.
- Requires enough time to complete. Butterfree interrupts it with Confusion before his evolution, while a later attempt succeeds because Butterfree has retreated too far to interrupt promptly 92.
Endeavor
An Egg Move that reduces an opponent’s HP to the user’s remaining HP, making it especially valuable when Poliwag is close to fainting 4.
- Brings Oshawott down to similarly low health before Poliwag’s faster Water Gun finishes it 9.
- Paired with Mind Reader, heavily damages Bai Yuling’s Level 55 Altaria during a restrained instructional battle 30 31.
- Requires risky timing: Poliwag is highly vulnerable when his HP is low enough to produce the greatest effect 9.
- Zhang plans a future combination in which Poliwag weakens an opponent with Endeavor and Pidgey finishes it with Quick Attack 13.
- Turns the battle against Machop around and later remains central to victories over Tauros and Machamp 59 105 294.
- Against Azumarill, follows three Bulk Ups and three Play Rough hits, reducing the opponent from full HP to approximately one-fifth 265.
- Can be countered by prediction and defensive moves. Forretress and Butterfree block it with Protect, while Medicham avoids it with Detect 147 266 381.
- Allows a badly weakened Poliwrath to leave Victreebel close to defeat even after Swift Swim is suppressed 313.
Hypnosis
A sleep-inducing move learned by Level 9. Its light sleep normally lasts one to four turns 14.
- Practiced on the agile Pidgey to improve its relatively low accuracy 14.
- Can become less accurate against a much higher-level opponent, as demonstrated against Altaria 30.
- Creates openings for Bubble Beam against Oshawott and Tepig 42 44.
- Helps Poliwag escape Poochyena’s Poison Fang by putting the attacker to sleep at close range 57.
- Combined with Mind Reader, provides reliable openings for stronger attacks after evolution 92 97 124.
- Supports setup as well as offense: Poliwrath repeatedly uses Bulk Up while Heracross is asleep 379.
Thief
A Dark-type attack learned through a single-use Technical Machine. It damages the target and can transfer its held item to Poliwag 24.
- Provides attacking coverage against Psychic- and Ghost-type Pokémon 24.
- Reaches approximately 40% success during practice against Butterfree holding a Pecha Berry 34.
- Steals Oshawott’s Leftovers in their rematch, allowing Poliwag to recover damage during the battle 42.
- Items stolen in Trainer battles must be returned afterward; refusing risks revocation of the Trainer’s qualification 24.
- Successfully steals a wild Poochyena’s Nugget, realizing Zhang’s plan to obtain valuable held items in the wilderness 57.
- Later takes Mystic Water from Wartortle and Samurott, weakening their Water-type attacks while strengthening his own 161 243.
- Remains listed in the Level 59 Poliwrath profile, although it is not listed in the later Level 74 Politoed profile 300 424.
Rain Dance
Learned at Level 15 after the victory over Psyduck, Rain Dance establishes the weather needed for Swift Swim and strengthens Water-type attacks 80.
- Allows Poliwag to evade Axew’s Dragon Rage and quickly complete Mind Reader and Hypnosis 83.
- Enables the evolved Poliwhirl to reverse his match against Butterfree after putting her to sleep 92.
- Forms the basis of coordinated training with Cloyster before the Double Battle Tournament 137.
- Powers Poliwrath’s one-hit defeat of Blaziken and his speed-based pressure against Wigglytuff 262 275.
- Requires a setup interval during which opponents can attack or apply status effects 300 381.
- Continues to support high-level offense, strengthening Hydro Cannon against Girafarig 413.
Physical Attacks and Fighting-Type Techniques
| Move | Documented development or use |
|---|---|
| Double Slap | Used as a tail-based attack in Poliwag form; defeats Psyduck and later drives Corphish backward before Body Slam 79 80 99. |
| Body Slam | Learned upon evolution into Poliwhirl. Finishes Tauros after Endeavor and stops Beedrill from laying a second layer of Toxic Spikes 92 105 192. |
| Wake-Up Slap | Learned during the training that brings Poliwhirl to Level 27; identified as a useful combination with Hypnosis because it deals heavy damage to sleeping Pokémon 136. |
| Submission | Gained through the Poliwrath transformation and later mastered. Used to defeat Dewgong and Heracross, and to pressure Ludicolo 153 170 193 240 380. |
| Circle Throw | Gained through the Poliwrath transformation and retained in the Level 59 profile 153 300. |
| Dynamic Punch | A signature Fighting-type attack that confuses a target when it lands. Used against Ludicolo, Azumarill, Floatzel, Machamp, Mega Lucario, and Heracross 193 265 283 294 378 380. |
| Bulk Up | Raises Attack and Defense. Used repeatedly to withstand Azumarill’s physical attacks, exploit Dewgong’s poor matchup, and prepare while Heracross sleeps 240 265 379. |
| Low Sweep | Listed among learned moves in the Level 59 Poliwrath profile 300. |
Dynamic Punch benefits from Poliwrath’s Fighting typing and Black Belt. Against Mega Lucario, its power combines with the opponent’s repeatedly lowered defenses from Close Combat to remove approximately three-quarters of Lucario’s HP in a single decisive blow 378.
Waterfall and Advanced Water Attacks
- Waterfall — Confirmed among Poliwhirl’s learned moves by Level 16. Becomes a major physical Water-type attack, used to capture Onix, pressure Dewott and Charmeleon, defeat Blaziken, and finish Machamp and Seismitoad 97 161 182 262 294 415.
- Hydro Pump — Listed in the Level 59 Poliwrath profile; later exploits Nidoking’s Water weakness and trades evenly with Seismitoad’s Hydro Pump 300 312 414.
- Water Pulse — Finishes Nidoking and leaves Victreebel barely standing as Poliwrath is knocked out. The Level 74 Politoed profile lists it as an Egg Move 312 313 424.
- Hydro Cannon — Described as Poliwrath’s strongest attack during the Girafarig battle. Its rain-boosted power defeats Girafarig and later shatters Seismitoad’s Protect, but leaves Poliwrath briefly unable to move afterward 413 414.
- Surf — Listed among learned moves in both the Level 59 Poliwrath and Level 74 Politoed profiles 300 424.
- Scald — Listed among learned moves in the Level 74 Politoed profile 424.
Rain and temporarily stolen Mystic Water can jointly enhance Waterfall. Against Dewott, this combination leaves the target critically weakened for Cloyster to finish 161.
Protect
Confirmed among Poliwhirl’s learned moves by Level 16, Protect becomes a frequent defensive tool 97.
- Blocks Wigglytuff’s Sing and Butterfree’s Rage Powder 275 380.
- Can withstand a powerful Fairy-type assault from Primarina, although the barrier develops cracks 276.
- Is not absolute: Mismagius’s Phantom Force and Victreebel’s Gastro Acid pass through it, while sufficiently powerful attacks from Heracross and Butterfree break through it 272 313 380 381.
- Its availability can be exploited. Seismitoad prompts a defensive response with Supersonic, then lands Toxic while Protect is unavailable 414.
Coverage and Politoed-Specific Moves
- Ice Beam — Zhang buys a 150,000-coin Technical Machine to broaden Poliwhirl’s coverage, especially against Dragon types. Later used against Breloom and retained in both final-form profiles 107 153 240 300 424.
- Perish Song — Gained in Politoed form. Forces switching pressure; if an opponent has no remaining Pokémon to switch to, it will faint after three turns 153.
- Swagger — Gained in Politoed form and retained in the Level 74 profile 153 424.
- Mud Shot, Belly Drum, and Mud Bomb — Listed as basic moves in later profiles 153 300 424.
- Rock Slide, Focus Blast, and Bulldoze — Listed among learned moves in the Level 59 Poliwrath profile 300.
- Bounce and Hyper Voice — Listed as basic moves in the Level 74 Politoed profile 424.
- Hyper Beam and Toxic — Listed among learned moves in the Level 74 Politoed profile 424.
- Ice Ball — Listed as an Egg Move in the Level 74 Politoed profile 424.
Other Documented Move
- Bubble — Listed among his basic moves at Level 10; no separate training or combat use is described in the supplied passages 30. Remains listed after his subsequent evolutions 92 153 300 424.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thief Technical Machine — Bought for 40,000 Pokémon Coins after a group discount. Its disc breaks after Poliwag absorbs the move’s energy 21 24.
- Pecha Berry — Used to cure poisoning after Li Peng’s Sandshrew lands Poison Sting. Also temporarily acquired through Thief during practice with Butterfree 18 34. Later cures the severe poisoning inflicted by Poochyena’s Poison Fang 57.
- Leftovers — Temporarily stolen from Ye Lang’s Oshawott and used for recovery during their tournament rematch; not established as Poliwag’s permanent held item 42.
- Nugget — Stolen from a wild male Poochyena with Thief. Zhang keeps it after the encounter and later sells it alongside a Sitrus Berry for a combined 12,000 Pokémon Coins 57 58.
- Healing Spray — Used to treat injuries after the Poochyena and Machop battles. Zhang later leaves it at the waterfall for Poliwag and Machop to use after sparring 57 59 65.
- Candlenut Berry — Temporarily held while serving as Pidgey’s practice target for Thief 65.
- Ice Beam Technical Machine — Purchased for 150,000 Pokémon Coins to expand Poliwhirl’s coverage 107.
- Mystic Water — Temporarily taken from Wartortle and Samurott; strengthens his Water-type attacks while depriving the opponents of their own boost 161 243.
- Black Belt — Purchased to strengthen Poliwrath’s Fighting-type moves, since rain already enhances his Water offense. Confirmed as his held item at Level 59 and used to amplify Dynamic Punch against Mega Lucario 259 300 378.
- Damp Rock — Held in the Level 74 Politoed profile; extends the duration of rain 424.
Relationships
- Zhang Cheng — Trainer and parent figure. Their bond develops through shared exercise, encouragement, play, baths, massages, and rewards 3 4 5 10. The Bond Phenomenon creates a further sense of connection, and their later battles demonstrate complete trust and close anticipation of commands. Zhang continues to praise him as a longtime partner 153 265 276 413 415.
- Pidgey — Teammate first encountered as an orchard opponent. Poliwag warmly welcomes her after capture; they share guard duty, spar, and rest together 12 13 14 24. Later serves as her Thief practice partner, and the pair continue training together after she evolves into Pidgeotto 65 136.
- Butterfree — Ye Tian’s Pokémon and a regular sparring partner. Helps Poliwag practice Thief and continues serving as his training partner after Mareep joins the team 24 34 37 50. Their battle triggers his evolution into Poliwhirl. In a much later rematch, Butterfree defeats Poliwrath through Sleep Powder, repeated Quiver Dance, and a predicted Endeavor 92 380 381.
- Altaria — Bai Yuling’s Pokémon and an instructional opponent. The two greet each other before battling and later play together after treatment 30 32.
- Mareep — Newly hatched teammate whom Poliwag immediately approaches and befriends. His attempt to share Water-type food prompts Zhang to explain Mareep’s different dietary needs 50. Guards her during early forest training; after her eventual evolution into Ampharos, her damage and paralysis against Mega Lucario create the conditions for Poliwrath’s decisive entry 56 378.
- Machop / Machoke — Wild waterfall-dwelling Pokémon and recurring sparring partner. Poliwag wins their first completed match, encourages him to accept Pokéblocks, and returns for regular battles. Their training relationship continues after Machop evolves into Machoke 58 59 65 129 136.
- Cloyster — Xiao Wei’s Pokémon and a doubles partner. Practices rain-based coordination with Poliwhirl and later helps Poliwrath defeat Dewott through concentrated attacks 137 161.
- Swampert — Teammate who fights alongside Poliwrath against the R Organization’s Drapion and can take over against Electric-type threats that endanger him 234 294.
