Ch. 21Her Curtain Call

Plot

  • Stelle’s connection to Preservation lets her wrest control of the Engine of Creation from Cocolia. The Engine and the group attack, but Cocolia repeatedly regenerates and retaliates with powerful ice magic.
  • Cocolia unleashes “Prelude to Genesis” and then “Genesis Finale,” forming a huge black-ice celestial body to devastate the battlefield. Zhang Xiu intercepts much of its energy, surviving through his regenerative power.
  • Zhang Xiu reveals a second stage: he ignites the flame within him, a gift awakened by Preservation, and channels it through his Greatsword. With the Engine’s help, he strikes Cocolia down.
  • As Cocolia tries to draw on the Stellaron again, she briefly recognizes how thoroughly it has misled her and prepares to die with it. Yaoshi removes and refines the Stellaron into a seed instead.
  • Zhang Xiu spares Cocolia, telling her to spend her life atoning. He gives the seed to Bronya as a future means of settling Belobog’s debt to the company, and offers help if outside forces threaten the planet.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Xiu demonstrates both resilience and tactical resolve: he absorbs the force of Cocolia’s attack, awakens his Preservation-linked flame, and chooses imprisonment and atonement over killing her. He also plans for Belobog’s political and financial future.
  • Cocolia shifts from certainty in her promised “new world” to a moment of doubt and remorse once the Stellaron’s influence weakens. She is defeated but survives.
  • Stelle uses her bond with Preservation to command the Engine of Creation and stands beside Zhang Xiu against Cocolia.
  • Bronya rushes to her fallen mother, but Seele restrains her from entering danger. Zhang Xiu later gives Bronya the refined Stellaron seed.
  • Serval confronts her former close friend, urging Cocolia to abandon her delusion. Yaoshi saves Cocolia by extracting the Stellaron, then gives its transformed seed to Zhang Xiu.

Themes

  • Manipulation and accountability: Cocolia’s remorse suggests the Stellaron distorted her judgment, but she must still answer for her actions.
  • Sacrifice and protection: Zhang Xiu risks himself to shield the others and Belobog.
  • Mercy and rebuilding: Cocolia is spared so she can atone, while the seed offers a practical path toward securing Belobog’s future.
  • Conflicting visions of salvation: Cocolia’s destructive “new world” is opposed by the group’s effort to preserve and repair the world they have.

Ch. 22Have you become a hero?

Key plot points and events

  • Cocolia announces that the Engine of Creation crisis has ended, the Eternal Freeze and Fragmentum threat are over, and the blockade on the Underworld—and the warrants against the Nameless—are lifted.
  • Zhang Xiu jokes with Gepard about the crude portrait on his wanted poster, then joins March 7th and the others on a visit to the Underworld. Pharmacist accompanies him.
  • In the Underworld, the group tells Natasha and Oleg about the battle and checks on Shaya, one of the children Zhang Xiu rescued. Shaya is now helping at Natasha’s clinic and seems calmer.
  • Zhang Xiu and the others say goodbye to Hook, Clara, and their friends. News of the lifted blockade spreads, and Silvermane Guards return to the Underworld for the first time in over a decade.
  • After a long day, the group returns to the Goethe Hotel. March 7th persuades Dan Heng to stay the night rather than return immediately to the Astral Express.
  • That evening, Pharmacist asks Zhang Xiu whether saving a world makes him a hero. He says it does not yet fulfill his dream, and proposes that they hold a proper wedding once he becomes a great hero.

Character developments

  • Zhang Xiu remains playful and affectionate, but shows care for the children he rescued and concern about their recovery. He sees saving Belobog as meaningful without considering himself a true hero yet.
  • Pharmacist continues to support and comfort Zhang Xiu, while expressing that following his wishes is her own choice.
  • Shaya appears to be recovering and building a new life at Natasha’s clinic, though she remains shy.
  • Cocolia publicly ends the isolation of the Underworld and clears the Nameless’ warrants.
  • March 7th is eager to explore and celebrate, while Dan Heng is initially practical and reluctant to delay their return.

Significant themes

  • Reconciliation and renewal: The lifted blockade opens the way for Upper and Underworld residents to reconnect.
  • Recovery after trauma: Shaya’s quiet progress reflects the difficult work of rebuilding life after suffering.
  • Heroism and purpose: Zhang Xiu rejects easy acclaim, viewing heroism as a larger personal aspiration.
  • Love and companionship: The chapter highlights Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist’s mutual devotion and their hopes for a future together.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Xiu teases Gepard about his drawing, while Gepard bashfully explains his lack of artistic skill.
  • March 7th and Gepard share a comic misunderstanding over Pharmacist’s formal phrasing; Zhang Xiu responds with exaggerated affection.
  • Zhang Xiu gently reassures Shaya and promises to visit again, while March 7th admires her.
  • March 7th argues with Dan Heng for a hotel stay; Zhang Xiu’s decision to rest helps sway him.
  • Pharmacist tenderly strokes Zhang Xiu’s hair as they discuss whether he is a hero and imagine a future wedding.

Ch. 23My Wife and I Want to Go to the Xianzhou

Key plot points and events

  • Cocolia and Serval reunite beneath the stars after many years. Cocolia feels her past wrongs are beyond repair, but Serval refuses to let her withdraw and insists they spend the night drinking together.
  • Elsewhere, Bronya and Seele argue over how to use limited resources for rebuilding the Underworld. Their disagreement reflects the strains of leadership, but they recognize they will face their difficulties together. They notice a star moving against the sky, foreshadowing the travelers’ journey.
  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist secretly watch Cocolia and Serval, then joke about their relationship and settle a bet. Zhang Xiu loses and has to drink Himeko’s notoriously awful coffee; he retaliates by making Pharmacist taste it. They flirt, and Pharmacist affectionately removes the bitterness from his mouth.
  • The next morning, the crew prepares to choose its next destination. Zhang Xiu proposes the Xianzhou, but Himeko rejects the suggestion immediately. The chapter ends with the others’ silence, hinting that they know something he does not.

Character developments and interactions

  • Cocolia and Serval: Cocolia is remorseful and believes she cannot make amends; Serval responds with forceful, caring insistence rather than letting her isolate herself.
  • Bronya and Seele: Their conflict shows Bronya’s new burden of planning and Seele’s impatience with bureaucratic constraints. Despite clashing, they affirm that they will keep confronting their problems together.
  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist: Their playful teasing and affectionate kiss reveal an intimate, mischievous relationship. Pharmacist can read Zhang Xiu’s intentions and responds on her own terms.
  • The crew: March is eager to travel, while Dan Heng’s nightmares suggest anxiety about returning to the Xianzhou. Himeko, Welt, and the others’ unexplained refusal makes Zhang Xiu’s proposal suspicious.

Significant themes

  • Guilt and reconciliation: Serval offers Cocolia companionship even when Cocolia believes forgiveness or repayment is impossible.
  • Responsibility and disagreement: Bronya’s leadership requires difficult choices, while her bond with Seele helps them endure conflict.
  • Affection through humor: Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist express closeness through teasing, shared routines, and playful intimacy.
  • Foreshadowing and uncertainty: The reversed shooting star and the crew’s sudden silence point toward complications surrounding the Xianzhou.

Ch. 24She's Your Mom!

Plot points and events

  • Kafka appears aboard the Astral Express and asks the crew to change course for the Xianzhou Luofu, where a Stellaron erupted forty-five system hours earlier.
  • Zhang Xiu abruptly claims Kafka is Stelle’s mother because he saw her create Stelle on the space station. Stelle accepts this, calling Kafka “Mom,” which turns the tense meeting into an awkwardly comic one.
  • Kafka says her companion Blade has been captured by the Cloud Knights. She wants him rescued, the Stellaron crisis resolved, and the Stellaron Hunters’ names cleared.
  • The crew questions her account and motives. Kafka warns that the Stellaron could spread through the Luofu and kill roughly half its inhabitants if left unchecked.
  • Welt points out that the Pharmacist’s presence aboard the Express could make the crew enemies of the Xianzhou and attract the attention of the Aeon of the Hunt. Kafka leaves the decision to them and disappears.
  • The Pharmacist says her current body can pass unnoticed on the Luofu. The crew begins leaning toward investigating, with Himeko proposing they wait for Dan Heng before deciding.

Character developments

  • Stelle’s trust in Zhang Xiu makes her accept his absurd claim about Kafka, though she later weighs the Luofu mission more seriously.
  • Zhang Xiu uses humor to puncture the tension, while March repeatedly challenges both his claim and Kafka’s reliability.
  • Kafka remains composed and courteous despite skepticism, presenting the mission as both a rescue and a chance to clear her group’s name.
  • Welt takes the potential political consequences seriously but is still willing to accompany the crew.
  • The Pharmacist shows curiosity about the Luofu and reassures the others that she can conceal her identity.

Themes

  • Trust and uncertainty: The crew must decide whether to believe Kafka, whose request may conceal other motives.
  • Responsibility versus caution: They are not obliged to intervene, but the possible deaths on the Luofu weigh against staying out of it.
  • Tension and comedy: Zhang Xiu’s “she’s your mom” joke repeatedly disrupts the serious discussion.
  • Consequences of association: The Pharmacist’s presence could draw the Xianzhou’s hostility and the Hunt’s attention.

Character interactions

  • Kafka addresses Himeko and the crew, while Himeko and Welt remain wary of her.
  • Zhang Xiu persuades Stelle—at least momentarily—that Kafka is her mother; March protests, and the Pharmacist quietly observes the exchange.
  • March invokes Zhang Xiu’s claimed Galaxy Ranger identity as a warning, though he does not correct her.
  • Welt, March, Himeko, and the Pharmacist discuss the risks after Kafka leaves, with Himeko postponing the final decision until Dan Heng wakes.

Ch. 25Xianzhou Luofu

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi visit Aurum Alley, where they run into Chen Chang’an and Li Ge, two Skydeep serving as Cloud Knights.
  • The pair initially bow respectfully to Yaoshi, then angrily confront Zhang Xiu for his relationship with her. Li Ge’s altered Synesthesia Beacon makes his outrage come out as cute, plaintive sounds.
  • Over a meal, the four discuss the Skydeep’s recent integration into the Xianzhou. Their people have been assigned across its ships, while Chen Chang’an and Li Ge are fighting on the front lines.
  • Zhang Xiu says the Skydeep joined partly to follow Yaoshi’s ideals and help others. Privately, he admits his main motive was to keep his powerful, rapidly reproducing people from becoming a threat to the wider universe.
  • Yaoshi warns the Skydeep not to commit evil. Li Ge assures her that they reject the cruelty of other Abominations of Abundance.
  • After parting from the Cloud Knights, Zhang Xiu takes Yaoshi for a snack and asks about her history with the Xianzhou. She begins her account by describing how she answered humanity’s longing to cross the “infinite sea” by granting blessings to many.

Character developments

  • Zhang Xiu is playful and openly affectionate toward Yaoshi, but his decision to bring the Skydeep into the Xianzhou also reveals a pragmatic, controlling side.
  • Yaoshi remains gentle and devoted to Zhang Xiu, while speaking with authority when reminding the Skydeep of their moral responsibilities.
  • Chen Chang’an and Li Ge are dutiful Cloud Knights working to help their people adjust to life within the Xianzhou. Their reverence for Yaoshi contrasts with their contempt for Zhang Xiu.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Xiu teases the two Cloud Knights with his intimacy with Yaoshi; their disapproval is immediate and intense.
  • The group’s conversation mixes political concerns about Skydeep integration with personal comedy, particularly the Knights’ reactions to Zhang Xiu and Li Ge’s beacon-altered speech.
  • Yaoshi’s calm reassurance and warning briefly unite the conversation around the Skydeep’s loyalty and conduct.

Significant themes

  • Power and responsibility: The Skydeep are immensely strong, and their integration raises concerns about how they will use that power.
  • Belonging and cooperation: The Xianzhou offers the Skydeep a place in a wider alliance, though both sides remain wary.
  • Faith, devotion, and irreverence: The Knights’ reverence for Yaoshi clashes with Zhang Xiu’s casual, affectionate treatment of her.
  • A larger history unfolding: Yaoshi’s opening words begin a tale about humanity, mortality, and the origins of her connection to the Xianzhou.

Ch. 26Altruism with Limits

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist reflect on the Xianzhou’s history: the Abundance granted longevity, but the resulting calamities—including mara-struck people—eventually drove the Xianzhou to follow the Hunt.
  • Zhang Xiu hopes Pharmacist will reconsider her unconditional generosity and recognize that altruism sometimes requires limits. He cautions that forcing her away from her Path could have serious consequences.
  • From a terrace near Cloudford, they observe Stelle, March 7th, Welt, and Phantylia—still posing as Tingyun—after the group deals with mara-struck soldiers.
  • Phantylia recognizes Pharmacist and is startled to see Zhang Xiu with her. Though her plan falters, she considers asking Pharmacist for a blessing.
  • Pharmacist urges Zhang Xiu to kill Phantylia, believing she threatens the Xianzhou and others. Zhang Xiu frames killing evildoers as potentially altruistic: it can prevent harm or serve as atonement.
  • His argument prompts Pharmacist to reflect so intensely that her Aeonic features begin to reappear. She stops herself to avoid exposing them and endangering Zhang Xiu.
  • In a vision or memory, a petitioner asks Pharmacist for longevity and power. She grants a golden fruit, but makes its gift conditional: the recipient must not harm others except to uphold justice or protect life, or they will face punishment and death.

Character developments

  • Pharmacist begins to question whether benevolence means granting every request without considering its consequences. Her emerging willingness to contemplate killing a dangerous person marks a major shift.
  • Zhang Xiu acts as Pharmacist’s guide and partner, encouraging her to define boundaries for her gifts while protecting her from discovery.
  • Phantylia is shaken by the presence of Pharmacist and Zhang Xiu, and reassesses how to proceed with her scheme.

Significant themes

  • Altruism and its limits: Helping others may require refusing harmful requests or preventing harm.
  • Power and responsibility: Longevity and blessings can carry destructive consequences, so gifts may need conditions.
  • Paths and change: Pharmacist’s self-reflection brings her closer to a new understanding, but challenging her nature risks personal and cosmic consequences.
  • Justice, protection, and punishment: The chapter considers whether restraining or killing wrongdoers can itself be an act of compassion.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Xiu gently urges Pharmacist to think things through, then offers a moral framework for confronting evil.
  • Pharmacist trusts Zhang Xiu enough to ask him to kill Phantylia, while he responds by guiding her toward a broader understanding rather than acting immediately.
  • Phantylia’s recognition of Pharmacist creates a silent confrontation at a distance; March notices her distraction, and Phantylia conceals her shock.
  • In the final vision, Pharmacist grants a petitioner’s wish but establishes a strict moral condition, showing her developing approach to compassion.

Ch. 27Compassionate Medicine King

Key plot points and events

  • Lan sends the Xianzhou a new Arrow Edict: the Pharmacist is no longer considered Lan’s enemy, though the Abominations of Abundance remain targets. Jing Yuan is shocked and begins wondering whether the Abundance Path—or the Pharmacist herself—has changed.
  • Zhang Xiu brings the calm Pharmacist to Cloudford, where they rejoin Stelle, March 7th, and Welt. They travel aboard a Starskiff piloted by the disguised Phantylia, who is posing as Tingyun.
  • At Starskiff Haven, Phantylia offers to escort the group to the Palace of Astrum to report to Yukong. Welt insists they wait outside while she announces them.
  • After Phantylia leaves, March challenges Zhang Xiu for appearing unexpectedly. He jokes that they simply wandered there. The Pharmacist says ordinary people cannot see through her disguise, though Phantylia has identified her true nature.

Character developments

  • Jing Yuan shifts his attention from the Luofu’s Stellaron crisis to the far more consequential implications of Lan’s decree.
  • Zhang Xiu remains playful and evasive, while quietly observing Phantylia and managing the timing of any confrontation.
  • The Pharmacist stays composed but is ready to act against Phantylia; Zhang Xiu’s restraint keeps her from revealing herself.
  • Phantylia grows suspicious of Zhang Xiu and the Pharmacist, carefully studying them while maintaining her Tingyun disguise.
  • March 7th is wary of Phantylia’s confident piloting and later reproaches Zhang Xiu for being sneaky. Welt remains cautious and diplomatic.

Significant themes

  • Restraint and justice: Lan’s decree suggests the Pharmacist may be able to accept limits, complicating the old conflict between Hunt and Abundance.
  • Uncertainty and hidden motives: Jing Yuan questions what has changed, while Phantylia’s disguise and the group’s concealed knowledge create tension.
  • Trust and control: The characters must decide when to reveal information and when to hold back, especially as the Pharmacist’s identity risks exposure.

Character interactions

  • Jing Yuan interprets Lan’s unexpected decree and weighs its implications.
  • March, Stelle, and Welt reunite with Zhang Xiu and the Pharmacist; March tries to keep the Pharmacist’s identity concealed.
  • Phantylia and the Pharmacist silently scrutinize one another, each aware of the other’s significance.
  • Welt tactfully delays the group’s visit to Yukong, while Zhang Xiu’s teasing deflects March’s questions.

Ch. 28I'm Good at Dealing with Leaders

Plot points and events

  • The group discusses the Xianzhou’s deep enmity with Yaoshi and agrees to protect her rather than abandon her if her identity is discovered.
  • Welt says they must visit the Palace of Astrum to meet Yukong and show the Astral Express’s goodwill. Zhang Xiu volunteers to handle the leaders, prompting March to worry he’ll cause trouble.
  • Welt asks whether Zhang Xiu can locate the Stellaron. Zhang Xiu says he can sense it, but insists it is not the Xianzhou’s current crisis.
  • Zhang Xiu reveals that his people, the Skydeep, have recently joined the Xianzhou. Yaoshi says Zhang urged them to join so their strength would remain under the law; the Xianzhou likely accepted them to prevent them from becoming a threat.
  • The group travels toward the palace. Stelle receives a message from Tingyun, who is actually Phantylia. Zhang Xiu disguises himself with a wooden mask, while Yaoshi takes on an unrecognizable childlike appearance.
  • On the way, they overhear residents voicing fear and suspicion toward the Skydeep, whose formidable warriors are already serving as Cloud Knights. The group reaches the palace, where Phantylia leaves them to meet Yukong. Welt asks Stelle to keep Zhang Xiu in check.

Character developments and interactions

  • March is anxious about the danger of being associated with Yaoshi, but insists the crew will not abandon a companion. Stelle likewise declares her loyalty, while jokingly imagining a blessing from Yaoshi.
  • Zhang Xiu is confident—and mischievous—about dealing with authority figures. March distrusts his approach, and Welt assigns Stelle to restrain him.
  • Welt’s concern about the Skydeep’s admission reflects his awareness of the political risks of integrating a powerful new population. Yaoshi expresses pride in Zhang Xiu’s strength and care for his people.
  • Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi’s affectionate boasting contrasts with March’s exasperation; Welt’s memories of his wife briefly soften the mood.
  • Phantylia continues her deception as Tingyun, guiding the crew toward Yukong while keeping her own motives concealed.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty and solidarity: The crew chooses to stand by Yaoshi despite the danger.
  • Power, law, and integration: The Skydeep’s strength makes their acceptance both a practical safeguard and a source of public anxiety.
  • Prejudice and uncertainty: Xianzhou residents fear the newcomers, illustrating the difficulty of welcoming a powerful outsider group.
  • Disguise and deception: Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi hide their identities, while Phantylia’s false identity remains an unseen threat.

Ch. 29Bear a Child with Me

Plot points and events

  • The Astral Express crew meets Yukong, head of the Sky-Faring Commission. She refuses their offer to help contain the Stellaron, insisting the crisis is an internal Xianzhou matter the Alliance can handle.
  • Welt argues that acting quickly could still limit the damage. Yukong remains firm—and then bars the crew from leaving while the investigation continues.
  • Yukong suspects the Express because someone hacked the port system, opened the Jade Gate, and guided their ship into the Luofu. The hacker’s deliberate signature points to Silver Wolf of the Stellaron Hunters.
  • Jing Yuan arrives and questions Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi about their visit to Aurum Alley and the Cloud Knights’ respect toward Yaoshi. Zhang Xiu claims they were honeymoon shopping and that Yaoshi rescued the soldiers during an Antimatter Legion attack.
  • Jing Yuan agrees with Yukong that the Luofu must handle its Stellaron problem itself, but says there is another matter for which he wants the Express’s help. He invites them along; Yukong withdraws.
  • As the others turn to business, Zhang Xiu disengages from the conversation and teases Yaoshi. She privately asks whether he would father a child with her after their Xianzhou journey.

Character developments and interactions

  • Yukong is cautious and protective of the Luofu’s independence. Her suspicion of the Express grows from the port-hacking evidence, and she imposes a travel restriction.
  • Welt remains measured and practical, advocating intervention before the Stellaron’s corruption spreads further.
  • March 7th grows impatient with Yukong’s refusal and suggests the crew leave, only to be stopped.
  • Jing Yuan presents himself as relaxed and courteous, but carefully probes Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi. He redirects the encounter toward a different request without revealing much of his thinking.
  • Zhang Xiu answers Jing Yuan’s questions with confident, seemingly unverifiable explanations, while treating the crisis discussion as tedious. His playful intimacy with Yaoshi contrasts with the tense political exchange.
  • Yaoshi is affectionate and attentive to Zhang Xiu, stopping him from saying too much and later raising the possibility of starting a family.
  • Stelle reacts with surprise to Yukong’s refusal and briefly uses Zhang Xiu as cover when the crew is accused.

Significant themes

  • Self-reliance versus cooperation: Yukong and Jing Yuan insist the Luofu must resolve its own crisis, while Welt argues that outside help could prevent greater harm.
  • Trust and suspicion: The Express’s unexplained arrival and Silver Wolf’s signature make them targets of investigation despite their offer to help.
  • Duty versus personal life: The Stellaron crisis and political questioning form the backdrop to Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi’s intimate, future-facing conversation.

Ch. 30A young heart's pride

Plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu is excited that Yaoshi, his wife and the Aeon of Abundance, has asked him to make a recruitment animation. His enthusiasm briefly turns to worry about how an Aeon might reproduce, but Yaoshi seems to understand his thoughts and shakes her head.
  • The group discusses Jing Yuan’s plan to pursue Blade and Kafka. Welt notices that Jing Yuan conspicuously avoided mentioning Blade and concludes that Blade may have escaped Cloud Knight custody. Stelle realizes the Astral Express crew are being used as bait to lure out the Stellaron Hunters.
  • At the Seat of Divine Foresight, Jing Yuan consults Fu Xuan. He confirms that the Astral Express is not involved in the escape and wants the Hunters drawn out, while keeping Blade’s escape from becoming public knowledge.
  • Fu Xuan suspects Jing Yuan may have allowed Blade to escape, but he denies it. She takes pride in her role supporting him and presses him to honor his promise to recommend her as his successor. Jing Yuan ends the call before the conversation can go further.
  • Jing Yuan discusses the situation with Yanqing. He explains that the Stellaron’s concealment and location are the greater mystery, and tells Yanqing not to rush into fighting Blade. Feeling slighted that outsiders have been assigned the task, Yanqing slips away before Jing Yuan can give him another assignment.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Xiu is newly married and giddy about Yaoshi, though his excitement is mixed with comic anxiety about her nature as an Aeon. He brushes off March 7th when she tries to ask what they are discussing.
  • Welt and Stelle demonstrate their ability to read between the lines of Jing Yuan’s strategy; March responds with surprise at the General’s cunning.
  • Jing Yuan appears relaxed and playful, but is quietly managing a complicated plan. He indulges Fu Xuan’s ambition while withholding his own thoughts, and tries to temper Yanqing’s impatience.
  • Fu Xuan is confident in her abilities and eager to succeed Jing Yuan, though her pride leaves her unaware of his amusement.
  • Yanqing is talented but impatient and competitive. His desire to prove himself—and his frustration at being passed over—leads him to act impulsively.

Significant themes

  • Strategy and hidden motives: Jing Yuan’s plan depends on concealment, misdirection, and using the Astral Express as bait.
  • Patience versus ambition: Jing Yuan urges Yanqing to wait for the right moment, while Yanqing’s pride pushes him toward immediate action.
  • Power and succession: Fu Xuan seeks leadership, while Jing Yuan weighs whether she is ready to take his place.
  • Pride and youthful insecurity: Yanqing’s confidence masks his sensitivity to being underestimated; Zhang Xiu’s romantic excitement provides a lighter, comic counterpoint.

Ch. 31A Person of Refined Taste Was Making a Recruitment Animation

Plot and events

  • After Zhang Xiu and the Astral Express crew leave the Palace of Astrum, Phantylia escorts Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi to the Dust-Cleansing Inn, while Welt, Stelle, and March decide to explore the Luofu.
  • At the inn, Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi encounter Chen Chang’an and Li Ge. The two men worry that Zhang Xiu may commit an outrageous act with Yaoshi, but Li Ge insists he would never dare.
  • In their room, Zhang Xiu asks Yaoshi whether having a child would mean creating one from their flesh. Though he is excited by the possibility, he worries that parenthood would conflict with their dangerous travels and that he would not be a good father.
  • He decides they should wait. Yaoshi gently challenges whether he truly has no desire for a child, then invites him to pray as he once did. The scene ends with a suggestive, comic euphemism: “magnetic levitation.”
  • Outside, Phantylia senses what is happening upstairs and struggles to process the fact that the revered Aeon of Abundance is making a “recruitment animation” with Zhang Xiu.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Xiu shifts from playful confidence to sincere uncertainty, revealing that he takes the responsibilities of fatherhood seriously and wants a child to have a peaceful childhood.
  • Yaoshi is affectionate and teasing, but also respects Zhang Xiu’s choice and does not pressure him. She draws out his feelings through gentle provocation.
  • Phantylia remains outwardly polite while inwardly alarmed and bewildered by the couple’s intimacy.
  • Chen Chang’an and Li Ge show reverence for Yaoshi and comic anxiety about Zhang Xiu’s intentions; their confident reassurances are undercut by their own doubts.
  • Stelle, March 7th, and Welt split up to explore, with Stelle predictably seeking out trash cans.

Significant themes

  • Love and responsibility: Zhang Xiu’s hesitation comes from concern for a future child, not lack of affection.
  • Choice and patience: Yaoshi leaves the decision to him, framing parenthood as something they can consider in their own time.
  • Reverence versus intimacy: The others view Yaoshi as an exalted Aeon, while Zhang Xiu relates to her as his wife—creating the chapter’s central comic contrast.

Ch. 32An Accidental Foray into the Imperial Domain

Plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist emerge from their room after an unexpectedly long wait, both looking slightly disheveled. Zhang Xiu reflects that he only remembers the broad outline of the story and will have to discover its details as events unfold.
  • The group prepares to search for Kafka. Dan Heng is missing, while “Tingyun” returns with Diting, a small tracking creature borrowed from the Artisanship Commission. It can follow a target’s scent and sound, but needs practice first.
  • Tingyun hides so the group can test Diting with her perfume. While they wait, Pharmacist chats with local children, who mistake her for a child because of her appearance.
  • Zhang Xiu scares the children away by claiming he will eat them. The frightened children fetch two Cloud Knights—Chen Chang’an and Li Ge—but the officers recognize the masked, black-clad Zhang Xiu and decide the situation is beyond their jurisdiction.
  • The children interpret the officers’ reaction as proof that they have encountered the Xianzhou’s “imperial household” and flee. Chen Chang’an later catches their leader to explain the misunderstanding.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Xiu is playful and teasing, joking with Diting and frightening the children; he is also openly affectionate toward Pharmacist. Pharmacist reciprocates, staying close to him and playfully imagining their future child.
  • March 7th is amused by Diting but embarrassed by Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist’s overtly sweet exchanges. Stelle remains largely unaffected.
  • Welt keeps the group focused on the Kafka search and starts Diting’s tracking test.
  • The children are curious about Pharmacist, then become alarmed by Zhang Xiu’s mask and behavior. Chen Chang’an and Li Ge’s familiarity with Zhang Xiu lets them recognize him and avoid escalating the misunderstanding.

Significant themes

  • Comedy through misunderstanding: Diting’s supposed familiarity with a cultural reference, Pharmacist’s youthful appearance, and the children’s mistaken “imperial household” conclusion all drive the humor.
  • Affection and domesticity: Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist’s intimate banter contrasts with the group’s investigation.
  • Story versus lived experience: Zhang Xiu remembers the plot only generally, underscoring that he must navigate events as they actually happen.

Ch. 33She's Your Mom. Would She Really Hurt You?

Key plot points and events

  • Diting refuses to track Tingyun at the port, explaining that strong winds make scent-tracking difficult. The group decides to ask people for information instead.
  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist question a comedy duo. After joking around, one performer says he saw Phantylia turn toward Xuanye Avenue, helping the group locate her near a snack stall.
  • Phantylia gives the group a device and tells them to activate it if they find any sign of Kafka at Returnstar Port.
  • On the Starskiff ride, Zhang Xiu suggests Stelle message Kafka directly. Kafka replies immediately that she is at Returnstar Port and asks whether Stelle has arrived.
  • Stelle worries Kafka may be setting a trap. Zhang Xiu reassures her by joking that Kafka is her mother, leaving Stelle uncertain but willing to accept the idea.
  • At Returnstar Port, Phantylia comments on the shutdown of the Starskiff production lines and seems oddly unconcerned about the crisis.
  • Zhang Xiu recognizes Phantylia as a Lord Ravager and considers using Pharmacist’s power to destroy her. He ultimately decides he will accept whatever consequences that choice might bring.

Character developments

  • Zhang Xiu balances humor and practical problem-solving, but his thoughts reveal growing seriousness about Phantylia’s danger and the possible consequences of changing the future.
  • Stelle is increasingly receptive to Zhang Xiu’s “Kafka is your mother” claim, even though she remains unsure whether it is true.
  • Phantylia, posing as Tingyun, maintains a charming, carefree manner that contrasts with her hidden identity and apparent indifference to the Luofu’s troubles.
  • March 7th questions Phantylia’s lack of concern, noticing the mismatch between her attitude and the crisis.

Significant themes

  • Appearance versus reality: Phantylia’s pleasant, playful persona conceals her identity as a destructive Lord Ravager.
  • Trust and family: Stelle’s uncertainty about Kafka is shaped by Zhang Xiu’s teasing reassurance.
  • Choice and consequences: Zhang Xiu weighs preserving the known course of events against acting against a major threat, then resolves to bear the fallout.
  • Crisis and disruption: The port’s shutdown shows how the Stellaron crisis affects ordinary travel and the Xianzhou’s wider operations.

Character interactions

  • The comedy duo’s banter turns the search for clues into a comic exchange, while still providing useful information.
  • Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist share an amused, affectionate moment as they question the performers.
  • Zhang Xiu privately encourages Stelle to contact Kafka, then jokingly frames Kafka as her mother to calm her fears.
  • March challenges Phantylia’s apparent lack of concern, while Zhang Xiu silently recognizes the danger she represents.

Ch. 34I Already Have a Wife

Plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu proposes making a spectacle while pursuing the Stellaron Hunters, then launches ahead alone to clear monsters and obstacles in Returnstar Port. He destroys the threats with his greatsword and Preservation flames, opening a route for his companions.
  • He finds Kafka with several Cloud Knights under her Spirit Whisper influence. While they wait for the others to catch up, Zhang Xiu and Kafka casually talk as they walk.
  • One controlled knight suddenly attacks Kafka. Zhang Xiu catches the blade, knocks the young knight unconscious, and gently leaves him against a wall.
  • Near their rendezvous point, Zhang Xiu asks whether Kafka meant it when she told Stelle she could call her “Mom.” Kafka says she is open to the idea, then suggests they fight so their easygoing conversation won’t look suspicious.
  • Their duel begins: Kafka fires on Zhang Xiu and uses a grappling move to throw him into a wall, but he emerges unharmed thanks to his strength and regeneration. He jokes that she should save that move for Stelle because he is already married. Kafka resumes firing, and he thanks her for the compliment.

Character developments

  • Zhang Xiu is eager for action and increasingly enjoys fighting, but remains protective of his companions and fellow Skydeep. He shows restraint and care by catching the knight’s blade, knocking him out rather than harming him, and settling him safely aside.
  • Kafka remains poised and playful, mixing casual conversation with calculated combat. Her comment about being willing to “play” a mother leaves her relationship with Stelle deliberately ambiguous.
  • March 7th and Welt recognize Zhang Xiu’s impulsive tendencies; Welt cautions him against causing unnecessary trouble.

Significant themes

  • Violence and performance: Zhang Xiu’s destructive efficiency contrasts with the need to make the pursuit look legitimate, while he and Kafka stage a fight to avoid appearing friendly.
  • Care amid conflict: Even in a hostile encounter, Zhang Xiu protects the young knight and worries about his people.
  • Ambiguous bonds and boundaries: Kafka’s maternal offer to Stelle is unresolved, while Zhang Xiu’s reminder that he has a wife sets a playful personal boundary.
  • Strength and resilience: Zhang Xiu’s regeneration makes Kafka’s attacks largely ineffective, though her technique and composure keep the duel engaging.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Xiu lightly banters with Kafka throughout their walk, discussing tea, the Cloud Knights, and her remark to Stelle.
  • He and Kafka shift from friendly conversation to combat by mutual agreement.
  • Zhang Xiu’s companions mainly appear through their reactions to his plans: March anticipates his intentions, while Welt advises caution.

Ch. 35A Shorty Descends from the Sky

Plot points and events

  • Stelle, March 7th, Welt, and Yaoshi join Zhang Xiu’s fight with Kafka. Kafka abruptly fires overhead, but Fu Xuan descends through the bullets, deflects them with her divination powers, and takes Kafka into custody.
  • Fu Xuan explains that the general has ordered the Divination Commission to interrogate Kafka. Yaoshi negotiates for the Astral Express crew to observe and hear the intelligence, and Fu Xuan agrees.
  • The group departs with Kafka, who is handcuffed by glowing restraints. Stelle shows concern for her comfort, and Kafka responds affectionately, calling her “darling.”
  • Phantylia leads them by Starskiff—but instead of reaching the Divination Commission, they arrive at the Exalting Sanctum. Fu Xuan recognizes the detour and questions Phantylia, who blames a malfunctioning Celestial Instrument and says they must continue on foot.
  • The party sees the leafless Ambrosial Arbor. Fu Xuan begins divining the problem, while March and Stelle joke about her finger-counting gestures.

Character developments and interactions

  • Fu Xuan proves formidable and authoritative, but her ornate speech and strict insistence on procedure make her a source of gentle humor. She is also frustrated by the general’s instructions and Phantylia’s detour.
  • Stelle retains sympathy for Kafka despite their conflict, worrying about her restraints. Kafka seems touched and watches Stelle during the journey.
  • Yaoshi confidently negotiates with Fu Xuan on the crew’s behalf, then shares an affectionate, playful exchange with Zhang Xiu about wearing traditional Xianzhou clothing.
  • March 7th and Stelle tease one another over Fu Xuan’s divination and March’s habit of counting on her fingers.
  • Phantylia acts apologetic while steering the group toward the Exalting Sanctum, where the ominous Arbor becomes a significant focal point.

Significant themes

  • Fate and foreknowledge: Fu Xuan’s divination frames the chapter, from her claim that their meeting was foreseen to her reading of the group’s predicament.
  • Duty versus compassion: The crew accepts Fu Xuan’s authority, while Stelle’s concern for Kafka underscores personal care amid official custody.
  • Trust and uncertainty: The unexplained detour and the Arbor’s desolate state hint that the journey is not proceeding as straightforwardly as expected.

Ch. 36Days gone by

Key plot points and events

  • Fu Xuan says the Stellaron crisis has also disrupted the Divination Commission, so the group cannot travel there directly. She leaves to prepare Kafka’s interrogation, keeping Kafka under her supervision as Jing Yuan ordered.
  • A brief misunderstanding follows when Zhang Xiu tries to warn Stelle not to let March speak; Stelle mistakenly attempts to stop March with a kiss.
  • Fu Xuan uses a spherical device to conceal Kafka’s presence and tells the others to wait for a guide.
  • Zhang Xiu leads the group into the bustling Exalting Sanctum, which appears untouched by the crisis. Yaoshi playfully lengthens his hair, and the two exchange affectionate, teasing remarks.
  • Spotting injured Cloud Knights being treated in a crowded plaza, Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi abandon their plans to shop. Yaoshi uses golden light to stabilize the wounded, including those close to succumbing to mara.
  • Bailu arrives to treat the soldiers but finds them already recovering. Zhang Xiu recognizes her as the reincarnation of Baiheng and recalls the tragedy surrounding Dan Feng, Yingxing, and the Imbibitor Lunae Rebellion. When Bailu asks who Yaoshi is, Zhang Xiu casually introduces her as his wife.

Character developments and interactions

  • Fu Xuan remains authoritative and focused on her duties, while confidently insisting the Commission depends on her.
  • Zhang Xiu shows concern for the wounded and acts quickly to help them; his impulsive introduction of Yaoshi creates an awkward moment.
  • Yaoshi is affectionate and playful with Zhang Xiu, but also demonstrates her healing abilities and compassion.
  • March 7th, Stelle, and Zhang Xiu share a comic misunderstanding, with Welt quietly opting not to get involved.
  • Bailu appears as a lively, capable healer, unaware of the history Zhang Xiu associates with her.

  • Healing and compassion: Yaoshi’s intervention brings immediate relief to the Cloud Knights.
  • Memory and reincarnation: Zhang Xiu’s recollections connect Bailu to the painful past of the High-Cloud Quintet.
  • Misunderstanding and intimacy: The group’s comic mix-up and Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi’s teasing affection add levity to the chapter.

Ch. 37Husband and wife

Chapter summary

  • Yaoshi treats Cloud Knights and civilians suffering from Stellaron-related symptoms, stabilizing them before they succumb to mara. The grateful crowd mistakes her healing for a miracle.
  • Zhang Xiu jokes with bystanders and explains that Bailu is a Vidyadhara, so she has no parents in the ordinary sense. Bailu introduces herself as a trained, registered physician at the Alchemy Commission.
  • Once the crowd disperses, Bailu warns the visitors to be careful amid the Luofu’s unrest. Yaoshi reassures her that the Cloud Knights will recover, then leaves with Zhang Xiu.
  • The couple head out to shop. Yaoshi decides to style Zhang Xiu’s hair herself, playfully grooming him while he carries her on his shoulder. She finishes by creating a sprig and placing a black laurel wreath on his head.
  • Elsewhere, Stelle, March 7th, and Welt hear from the Earth-Balance Commission about the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus: Abundance devotees seeking forbidden elixir formulas and immortality secrets. The group suspects a connection to the Skydeep and agrees to follow up on any leads.
  • The companions split up to investigate and explore. Stelle cannot reach Zhang Xiu or Yaoshi, so she searches the Exalting Sanctum alone—and spots a furtive green figure.

Character developments and interactions

  • Yaoshi shows her healing ability and tenderness toward Bailu, then turns her attention to affectionate, playful grooming of Zhang Xiu.
  • Zhang Xiu is openly devoted to Yaoshi, proudly calls her his wife, and responds with flustered delight to her attention.
  • Bailu comes across as both professionally confident and childlike: she boasts about her credentials, gives sensible safety advice, and treats Yaoshi’s healing with admiration.
  • March 7th briefly feels guilty after assuming Bailu has been abandoned, then relaxes when Zhang Xiu explains Vidyadhara life. She later chooses to explore with her camera.
  • Stelle and Welt remain focused on the investigation; Welt emphasizes caution as the group separates.

Significant themes

  • Care and healing: Yaoshi’s power brings relief to the wounded, while Bailu represents the Luofu’s established medical profession.
  • Different ways of belonging: Bailu’s self-sustaining rebirth challenges March’s assumptions about family and parenthood.
  • Affection and domestic intimacy: Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi’s playful bond contrasts with the chapter’s broader danger and political tension.
  • Unrest beneath the surface: The Disciples of Sanctus Medicus and the mysterious green figure suggest that the crisis is far from over.

Ch. 38Five hundred times, oh, five hundred times

Plot points and events

  • Green Pheobe, a covert recruiter for the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus, approaches Stelle and offers a path to immortality. Stelle says she wants power instead, but agrees to hear Pheobe out.
  • In a secluded courtyard, Stelle finds Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist already there, dressed in new clothes and sampling pastries. Pheobe explains the Disciples’ devotion to the “Compassionate Medicine King.”
  • Pheobe assigns the group an initiation task: copy a scripture five hundred times each. Zhang Xiu and Pharmacist struggle to imagine doing the work themselves, but a Cloud Knight undercover as a prospective recruit offers to help.
  • The knight rapidly completes all two thousand copies, using four different handwriting styles. The group submits them, but Pheobe reveals that this was only the first test.
  • She announces the next requirement: the four recruits must fight to the death, with only the survivor allowed to join.

Character developments and interactions

  • Stelle remains blunt and power-focused, joining the scheme out of curiosity rather than interest in immortality.
  • Zhang Xiu is playful and resourceful, immediately involving Stelle and later handing the tedious copying to the Cloud Knight.
  • Pharmacist is curious about Pheobe but comically unwilling—or unable—to help with the writing, despite being the figure the Disciples worship.
  • The Cloud Knight reveals impressive clerical skill and a practical plan: finish the task, maintain cover, then report the cult to the Seat of Divine Foresight.
  • Green Pheobe is cheerful and seemingly earnest, but her escalating tests expose the Disciples’ dangerous, coercive nature.

Significant themes

  • Immortality versus power: Stelle rejects Pheobe’s attempt to equate eternal life with power.
  • Bureaucratic absurdity and teamwork: The enormous copying task is solved through the Cloud Knight’s unlikely administrative talent.
  • Cult devotion and danger: The Disciples’ friendly recruitment masks increasingly extreme demands, culminating in a lethal trial.

Ch. 39Forgotten in the Pathway Rift

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu, Pharmacist, Li Ge, and Chen Chang’an confront Green Pheobe and Purple Rose, leader of the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus and a former Cloud Knight named Zhixin. After Chen Chang’an incapacitates Purple Rose, the group beats Green Pheobe for exploiting the Lord of Longevity’s name.
  • Chen gives Zhang a prescription requiring Vidyadhara marrow. Zhang passes it to Stelle, who has been working undercover on a commission from the Seat of Divine Foresight. The operation is effectively over, and the captured cultists are taken away for trial.
  • Zhang considers whether Pharmacist could use the Path of Propagation to let the Vidyadhara reproduce. Pharmacist says it may be possible, but warns that the consequences could be disastrous.
  • Zhang reveals that he cannot remember what happened when he entered the Pathway Rift during his fight with Cocolia. He knows only that he became a Pathstrider of Preservation and drew the Amber Lord’s attention; a black flame rises from his hand. Pharmacist cannot explain what occurred.
  • After briefly discussing Pharmacist’s power and their reliance on each other, Zhang and Pharmacist continue exploring Aurum Alley.
  • Zhang angrily confronts an ice-cream seller whose product melts immediately, then reveals he has arranged for Jing Yuan to call the shop owner.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang is impulsive, playful, and eager for trouble, but becomes genuinely uneasy when discussing his forgotten experience in the Rift and the Amber Lord’s gaze.
  • Pharmacist remains affectionate and supportive while offering sober warnings about the risks of altering the Vidyadhara’s nature. The two tease one another and openly acknowledge their mutual dependence.
  • Stelle is surprised that her undercover mission has ended almost as soon as it began; Zhang’s unexplained knowledge of her commission further hints at his secrets.
  • Li Ge and Chen Chang’an act decisively alongside Zhang, helping subdue the cultists. The Cloud Knight accompanying Stelle joins the group in taking the prisoners away.

Significant themes

  • Power and unintended consequences: Changing the Vidyadhara’s infertility might help them, but could also produce catastrophic results.
  • Memory and identity: Zhang’s missing memories leave his transformation and connection to Preservation unexplained.
  • Loyalty and dependence: Zhang and Pharmacist’s intimate relationship is reinforced by their trust and mutual support.
  • Comic disruption: The chapter contrasts serious questions about cosmic powers with slapstick violence, petty complaints, and Zhang’s appetite for mischief.

Ch. 40The Dream of Becoming a Hero

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Xiu’s phone call leads the Cloud Knights to arrest a shopkeeper suspected of selling prohibited goods. Other shopkeepers, frightened by the scene, retreat into their stores.
  • Zhang Xiu and Yaoshi meet Bailu, who has snuck out without money. They treat her to food and listen as she complains that adults rarely have time to play, despite promising children that adulthood will bring freedom.
  • Zhang Xiu reflects that suffering can force people to grow, but argues that suffering itself should not be celebrated; if people must adapt to a harsh world, the world is at fault. He and Yaoshi wish Bailu happiness before leaving.
  • The group reunites with the others and heads toward a mahjong parlor. Phantylia, still disguised as Tingyun, says she will return to the Sky-Faring Commission.
  • Zhang Xiu confirms to Welt that something is wrong with “Tingyun.” Yaoshi secretly uses her power to prevent Phantylia from overhearing them.
  • At the parlor, they find Qingque playing mahjong despite supposedly waiting for the guests. She repeatedly delays guiding them so she can finish her hand—and wins.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Xiu shows both authority and restraint: he acts against the shopkeeper but insists he does not misuse his position. With Bailu, he is gentle and generous, and his conversation with her reveals a more reflective side.
  • Bailu voices frustration with adult restrictions and responsibilities. She appreciates the food and kindness, though she does not fully grasp Zhang Xiu’s thoughts.
  • Yaoshi supports Zhang Xiu, helps provide food, and discreetly protects his conversation with Welt.
  • Welt trusts Zhang Xiu’s suspicions about Tingyun and plans to warn the others.
  • March 7th defends Phantylia’s cover identity from Zhang Xiu’s hostility, while Stelle playfully pressures Qingque.
  • Qingque is carefree and openly devoted to mahjong, putting off her assigned task until she finishes the game.

Significant themes

  • The chapter contrasts childhood freedom with the burdens of adulthood, questioning the idea that suffering is necessary or noble.
  • Kindness and companionship appear in small gestures, such as sharing food and wishing someone happiness.
  • Suspicion and concealed identities create tension beneath the group’s lighthearted conversations, while Qingque’s mahjong antics provide comic relief.
