Ch. 41The Three Calamities of the Xianzhou
Chapter summary
Plot and events
March 7th receives a warning from Zhang Xiu that “Tingyun” is dangerous. The woman who appears is actually Phantylia in disguise, but March hides the message and keeps up a friendly front. The group leaves for the Divination Commission, pausing to view the ruined Ambrosial Arbor.
The sight prompts Yaoshi to recall the Xianzhou’s three great calamities:
- The Life Calamity: Overpopulation, entrenched privilege, and social unrest led to the destruction of the Xianzhou Yuanqiao and the deaths of billions. A subsequent mass purge worsened the catastrophe before reforms restored order.
- The Flame Calamity: The tree-world Dinggou and its Borisin attacked the weakened Xianzhou. Reignbow bargained away his body for Heliobi power, inspiring others to make similar sacrifices. His arrow destroyed Dinggou and ended the crisis.
- The Void Calamity: Mara-struck immortals lost control of their bodies and minds, weakening faith in Yaoshi. The Ten-Lords Commission and Xianzhou Alliance emerged, and eventually Lan, the Aeon of the Hunt, was born.
Yaoshi quietly grieves over her connection to the disasters. Zhang Xiu comforts her, suggesting the past need not prevent reconciliation with the Xianzhou. The group then reaches the Divination Commission, where its locked gates stop them. Zhang Xiu prepares to force them open, but Yaoshi restrains him.
Character developments and interactions
- March 7th is unsettled by the warning but conceals it, choosing to maintain a cheerful, diplomatic manner around Phantylia.
- Zhang Xiu remains blunt and eager to solve obstacles with force, though he shows tenderness toward Yaoshi and ultimately yields to her restraint.
- Yaoshi reveals sorrow and uncertain memories tied to the Xianzhou’s history. Her closeness with Zhang Xiu offers comfort, while his words suggest hope for reconciliation.
- Qingque stays practical and avoids involvement in trouble that does not affect her. She guides the group but becomes flustered when the gates are unexpectedly locked.
- Welt tactfully reassures Qingque that the group will take responsibility for its own behavior.
- Phantylia, still disguised as Tingyun, maintains her pleasant façade; the group’s suspicion remains unspoken.
Significant themes
The chapter explores the costs of immortality, unchecked population growth, inequality, and political instability; the sacrifices required to survive catastrophe; and the tension between historical guilt and the possibility of reconciliation. It also contrasts restraint and responsibility with Zhang Xiu’s comic impulse to use brute force.
