Cooking smoke still curled above Ash Kiln Village. Its yellow earthen walls and thatched cottages glowed with the warmth of ordinary life in the dawn light. There were no cultivation towers soaring into the clouds, no trial grounds surging with Dou Qi, only elders catching their breath on field ridges, children chasing one another through the mud, and women tending fires and cooking at their stoves.
Yet today, the entire village was silent.
A figure came walking upon the clouds, fire blooming like lotuses beneath his feet. Each step gave birth to flames, yet they did not burn anyone; instead, they were like warm sunlight falling across the fields. He wore a tattered robe patterned with flames, a blade hanging at his waist. His gaze was as gentle as ever, yet within it lay an edge that could burn the Firmament to nothing.
"Lin Yan... has come back?"
"Is that the boy from our village? He... he didn't die in the Nine Flames Trial?"
"That fire on him... what is it? It doesn't look like Heavenly Flames, but it makes me feel... as though my heart is burning?"
The villagers stared up in a daze. Some knelt; others wept. They remembered the youth who had pitted mortal flame against a demonic Dark Flame cultivator to protect the whole village. They remembered what he had said when he left: "One day, I'll make sure the children of Ash Kiln Village no longer have to kneel and beg to survive because they have no fire seed."
Today, he had returned.
Lin Yan landed, slowly lowered both knees to the ground, and bowed deeply before the stone stele at the village entrance, engraved with the words "Ash Kiln."
"I'm back."
As his words fell, he raised his hand. Will Flame True Blaze rose from his palm, slowly blossoming like a crimson-gold lotus. He walked toward the long-abandoned Trial Stele in the village center—a broken stele left over from ancient times. Legend held that it had been erected when a Dou Di first established a cultivation lineage. It could test a fire seed's innate potential, yet it had never opened to mortals.
Boom—!
Will Flame True Blaze descended, branding the stele's surface!
In an instant, cracks spread across the stone. Runes sealed beneath ten thousand years of dust lit up one after another. But this time, their light was no longer the cold glow of an "aptitude test." It was a crimson-gold radiance, warm as spring sunlight, pulsing like breath, as though it had come alive.
"The... the Trial Stele is responding?!" An elderly village physician stumbled backward, trembling. "But it... it's never lit up before!"
Lin Yan stood before the stele, his clear voice carrying through every village for miles around:
"From this day onward, this stele shall be named the Mortal Flame Trial Stele!"
"All living beings of our Dou Qi Continent may come here to undergo its trial, regardless of the rank of their bloodline, the station of their birth, or whether they possess a fire seed!"
"So long as a single spark of resolve remains in your heart, so long as you wish to protect those you love, uphold what you believe, and kindle a flame that never dies—"
"I shall open a gate for you!"
Before his words had faded, he drew his blade and slashed at the Firmament!
The blade's energy neither struck the mountains and rivers nor severed an enemy's head. Instead, it became countless threads of fire that spread into the earth like meridians, pierced through mountains and waterways, and linked the flames of the earth veins across the nine lands before finally flowing into the base of the Trial Stele.
Rumble—!
The Trial Stele fully awakened. Nine tiers of fiery steps appeared upon its surface, each engraved with a character:
"Mortal flames may burn; those with resolve become emperors."
A crimson-gold pillar of light shot skyward, piercing straight through the clouds and resonating from afar with the Nine Flames Emperor Court above the highest heavens!
The Mortal Flame Gate opened!
Central Plains, the Gu Clan's council hall.
"Absurd! Utterly absurd!" An Ancestor of the Gu Clan laughed in fury, slammed the table, and rose. "A mere mortal dares to ignite a Trial Stele with mortal flame? And establish a 'Mortal Flame Gate'? He means to shake the ten-thousand-year foundations of our Gu Clan!"
"He has already broken through the Dao-Seeking Platform and stirred the resonance of the Nine Flames..." a young clan elder said quietly. "We... can no longer underestimate him."
"Underestimate him?!" the ancestor roared. "If he truly allows all the common people to cultivate the Emperor's Path, where does that leave our Gu Clan's Heavenly Mandate Bloodline? What use is our inheritance of Heavenly Flames? Wouldn't the entire Dou Di order collapse?!"
Silence filled the hall.
Then a sinister voice sounded from the shadows:
"Since he has opened the Mortal Flame Gate... let us send him a 'trial.'"
Everyone turned to see a black-robed man slowly emerge. There was no light in his eyes, yet they seemed capable of devouring all things. "The Chaos Remnants have lain hidden for years. All they lack is a legitimate pretext... to rekindle the World-Destroying Flame."
"Let this 'Mortal Flame Gate' of his become a burial ground for the masses."
"When that happens, everyone under heaven will understand—mortal flame is, in the end, only mortal flame. It has no right to seek the Dao."
Outside Ash Kiln Village, amid the wild hills.
A youth had already arrived on foot from a thousand miles away, his clothes ragged and his feet covered in bloody blisters. He knelt before the Trial Stele and pressed his trembling hands against its surface.
"I... I was born without a fire seed. The village elders said I had 'worthless meridians' and wasn't fit to cultivate... but my mother said that as long as my heart still beats, a fire can still burn..."
He closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, and poured all his will into his palms.
In an instant—
The Trial Stele's first tier lit up!
A faint little flame rose from his palm, like a firefly, yet stubbornly refusing to die.
"I... I have fire?!"
Tears streamed down his face as he threw back his head and screamed, "I have fire! I'm not worthless!"
More and more people arrived—beggars, servants, soldiers from the borderlands, disciples expelled from their sects... They were all people abandoned by the old order, yet this Mortal Flame Gate had rekindled their hope.
Lin Yan stood atop the stele, watching countless mortals gaze up at the fiery steps. Their eyes no longer held abasement, only light.
He said softly, "The Emperor's Path should never have been forbidden ground reserved for a select few."
"Today, I plant a seed—"
"It lies neither in the highest heavens, nor in the Gu Clan, nor deep within Heavenly Flames."
"It lies in mortal hearts."
"This is—the Emperor Seed Sprouts."
Suddenly, dark clouds massed on the horizon, and a sinister wind howled. A pitch-black pillar of fire erupted from underground and hurtled straight toward the Trial Stele!
"This is bad! It's Chaos Flame! Someone is destroying the earth-vein connection!"
Lin Yan's gaze turned cold. The Flame Blade left its sheath, and he slashed downward!
Boom—!
Blade fire collided with black flames, unleashing waves of fire a thousand zhang high and leveling the mountains.
A black-robed figure appeared and sneered. "Lin Yan, you've established your path with mortal flame, but have you ever considered—the flames of mortals are the easiest to devour?"
Lin Yan turned his blade, Will Flame True Blaze coiling around him, and said coldly:
"If you think mortal flame is easily extinguished, you're wrong."
"The reason mortal flame never dies—"
"Is that it never burns for just one person."
He raised his hand. The Trial Stele resonated, and the flames in the palms of countless mortals lit up at once. Like a river of stars hanging upside down, they gathered into a crimson-gold sea of fire and surged straight toward the black-robed man!
"This... is impossible! How can mortal flames resonate?!"
"Because—" Lin Yan pointed his blade straight at the man's heart. "They aren't kindling flames for themselves.
"They're fighting for one another."
"For a world—where everyone can lift their head and look at the sky."
The blade fell, the fire burned, and the black-robed man was reduced to ash.
Outside Ash Kiln Village, the sea of fire had not gone out.
The Mortal Flame Gate stood unshaken.
The Emperor Seed had sprouted.
A new path had begun to emerge; the old order was about to topple.
