Ch. 61Merfolk Island
Key plot points and events
- Geng Kun announces an expedition to Merfolk Island. Its king drove out Qianji Nu and insulted Geng Kun; when Qianji Quan returned with followers to seek revenge, the island’s Daoist, Wu Qiming, killed many of them.
- Geng Kun sends Qianji Quan, Yier, Yuan Ming, and Shi Feiyang to confront Wu Qiming, threatening Qianji Quan if he fails. He teaches the group the Phantom Body Technique to foil Wu’s Mind-Capturing Mirror, which can seize someone’s true form for use in curses.
- Each leader gathers a hundred followers. Geng Kun leads the unusual army across the sea, using his magic to create a temporary solid surface for the land-bound beasts while birds fly and aquatic creatures swim.
- Shi Feiyang swims along, explaining that he misses catching fish and playing with shrimp. The other creatures interpret this as disrespectful to Geng Kun and fear he will punish him. Instead, Geng Kun praises Shi’s restraint and reputation, and urges him to show his abilities against Wu.
- On reaching Merfolk Island, Shi Feiyang scouts its underwater settlements and terrain. When he surfaces, he finds seven Sword Immortals waiting in the air, taunting Geng Kun and threatening him in the name of their master. The chapter ends as the confrontation is about to begin.
Character developments and interactions
- Geng Kun is furious over the losses and insults, but frames the campaign as a test of his followers. He is harsh and intimidating toward Qianji Quan, yet shows interest in Shi Feiyang’s past battles and unusual caution.
- Qianji Quan is remorseful and frightened by Geng Kun’s rebuke, but vows to risk his life to kill Wu Qiming.
- Shi Feiyang remains observant and cautious, scouting before the battle. His casual remark unintentionally alarms the other monsters, highlighting how differently he behaves from Geng Kun’s fearful, obedient followers.
- Yuan Ming eagerly declares that the island will be razed and Wu Qiming killed, while the gathered followers demonstrate their loyalty by keeping pace with Geng Kun.
- The Sword Immortals’ taunts reveal that their master has prepared magical treasures for Geng Kun and that the conflict is tied to revenge for Geng Kun’s deceased brother.
