Nature and Distribution
- Secret realms are sources of cultivation resources. Cultivators explore them for natural treasures needed to suppress adverse spiritual-root influences and continue advancing 31.
- They are not necessarily untouched wilderness. The Half-Limit Secret Realm was formerly an inhabited private domain; its surviving cave-abode restrictions, traps, and accumulated spiritual resources earned it its later designation 91.
- Knowledge of their locations has practical value. Mortal records help locate an unnamed realm, while information brokers and former explorers sell information about treasure sites 1 31 118.
Grotto-Heavens and Blessed Lands
The Treatise on Grotto-Heaven Evolution describes another category of hidden cultivation environment with its own admission requirements and rewards 68.
- They form naturally from spiritual energy and require Foundation Establishment or higher to enter 68.
- Admission depends on a cultivator’s Eight Characters fate chart 68.
- Their nine-palace configurations develop Grotto-Heaven Seals, which can grant palace divine abilities and multiply the strength of existing abilities 68.
- Such expeditions can be even deadlier than the Half-Limit expedition: all 380 participants in one Qiantian Seal Secret Realm expedition died 199.
Background / History
Longyan’s Domain
According to accounts circulating in the cultivation world, the Half-Limit Secret Realm began as High Person Longyan’s private territory before the Immortal Alliance existed. It contained more than a hundred spirit veins and countless spiritual wellsprings. Humans and members of the Demon Race gathered there, advancing under Longyan’s guidance 91.
Longyan’s followers formed the Longyan Cult. Its rise provoked the Dragon Suppression War, during which Longyan fought ten Spirit Transformation experts, killed four, and severely wounded the others before dying. Seventeen comparatively less-damaged sects seized the conquered resources and subsequently grew into the Immortal Alliance 91.
The Surviving Formations
Longyan left two immense formations in the Yuanchi Northern Wasteland: the Half-Limit Secret Realm and the Heavenly Prison. Spiritual energy continued gathering within his former territory without dispersing, nurturing medicinal plants and spirit beasts while ancient restrictions remained active 91.
The Alliance preserved the realm as a resource source rather than dismantling it. Its sects feared that destroying the formation would allow rivals to seize its treasures, making their political competition an additional obstacle to opening the territory freely 198 200.
Geography
The Half-Limit Secret Realm is approximately as large as the territories of two Immortal Alliance sects combined. Maps distinguish explored territory from unknown regions; their coverage is expanded using information gathered from returning cultivators 117 118.
| Area | Features and Significance |
|---|---|
| First and Second Layers | Contain ruined palaces and towers, but have already been largely stripped of treasure 111. |
| Third Layer | An enormous inner region ordinarily admitting Qi Refining cultivators and below; the main destination for junior treasure hunters 111. |
| All-Knowing Secret Realm | The comparatively well-explored outer region marked on sect maps, with detailed records of terrain, ruins, formations, and wards. It is less dangerous than the depths 184. |
| Returnless Cold Pool | Mo Chen’s arrival area; inhabited by enormous savage fish, including a four-eyed creature with Foundation Establishment early-stage strength 111 112. |
| Ridge Trench | The location where Bai Weishuang finds the second Dragon Scale 137 145. |
| Jadeite River | An emerald-green river used by Mo Chen and Bai Weishuang to escape back toward mapped territory 145. |
| Sunken Spirit Valley | Formerly Demon-Transforming Valley, the fief of Longyan’s disciple, the Human-to-Monster True Person. Its wards can create convincing illusions of plants 148. |
| Spirit Ascension Tower | A three-floor tower in Sunken Spirit Valley, containing an expanded interior, a powerful disc ward, and a sentient treasure 150 157 158. |
| Apricot Blossom Shoal | A contested source of stone used to make refreshing spirit powder; located roughly a hundred li south of Sunken Spirit Valley 158 165. |
| Cotton-Scent Pool | Habitat of dangerous Silkglow Fin-Tailed Fish; used as a risky escape route from stronger pursuers 164 165 169. |
| Fire Spirit Valley | Contains an underground lava lake and concentrated fire spiritual energy, where Mo Chen attempts Foundation Establishment 183. |
Formations and Access
Layered Barriers
The realm’s protective curtains impose different cultivation-based restrictions. Organized expeditions open temporary breaches with progressively lower-ranked cultivators as they move inward 91 111.
| Barrier | Documented Restrictions | Expedition Opening Method |
|---|---|---|
| Outermost | Prevents Nascent Soul cultivators and above from leaving normally 198. | Nascent Soul True Persons jointly attack the curtain; a Spirit-Stabilizing Stele holds the temporary breach open 111. |
| Middle | Blocks living beings and ghosts above Foundation Establishment from passing in either direction 91. | Golden Core cultivators breach and stabilize the curtain 111. |
| Innermost | Blocks entry above Qi Refining and traps living beings above Golden Core inside 91. | Foundation Establishment cultivators open a narrow passage for the junior entrants 111. |
- The formation fluctuates naturally. Expeditions exploit the weakest point in its cycle; afterward, the curtain strengthens, changes from pale blue to gold, and becomes opaque even to the Spirit Eye Art 118 200.
- Entry restrictions do not cap native creatures’ strength. Beasts born inside can advance beyond the admission threshold, explaining the presence of Foundation Establishment-level threats in the third layer 112.
- Possession provides a means of intervention. True Person Yan Hua descends through a talisman placed on a Qi Refining disciple, whose possessed aura eventually settles at Qi Refining perfection 129.
- The interior remains verdant despite the barren entrance valley. Repeated high-level attacks used to open the realm have shattered surrounding rocks and severed spiritual veins outside its curtain 111.
Dragon Scales
- Alliance-held scale: Held by successive Immortal Alliance leaders; controls exit from the Half-Limit Secret Realm and entry into the Heavenly Prison 91.
- Second scale: Allows direct entry into the Half-Limit Secret Realm and release from the Heavenly Prison. Bai Weishuang acquires it during the expedition, providing a potential route back to the Spirit Ascension Tower 145 158.
- Formation cores: Longyan placed restrictive wards within the two scales and used them as formation eyes for the two great formations 145.
- Security risk: Dragon aura attracts Demon Beasts, requiring dedicated Dragon Scale Guards and coordinated protection during withdrawal 193.
Resources and Ancient Relics
| Resource or Relic | Use or Significance |
|---|---|
| Spiritual Herbs and Fruits | Widely distributed, well-aged materials suitable for cultivation and breakthrough attempts. Mo Chen and Gu Dongfeng gather seven or eight hundred specimens over two days 124. |
| Mind-Dazing Incense and Spirit-Erasing Sand | Rare materials needed to remove Zhu Shengxia’s tracking mark. Their scarcity outside the realm makes them prohibitively expensive 87. |
| Star-Eyed Tumorcap Mushrooms | A secret collection target for Emerging Cloud Peak. They grow on rotten bark, have star-patterned fluorescent caps, and emit a poisonous aura 109 113. |
| Thorn Rat | Its inner core is among the few wood-aspect materials capable of coloring the hundred-child ruins-return tree in a cultivator’s sea of consciousness 123. |
| Manifestation Stone / Refreshing Spirit Stone | Associated with exit inspections and the powder used to conceal realm-derived items. Cultivators keep Apricot Blossom Shoal’s deposits secret from the Alliance 107 158. |
| Wetland Water | Mo Chen refines it into spirit liquid with the Bathe-in-Fire Art, although processing it consumes considerable time and dharma power 158. |
| Disc Restrictive Ward | A powerful tower mechanism capable of confinement and defensive counterattacks. Mo Chen acquires it during the expedition 150 158. |
| Treasure-Subduing Command | Revealed by the Spirit Ascension Tower’s light mechanism; corresponds to the sentient treasure upstairs and requires an innate Dao embryo 157 158. |
Spirit Ascension Tower
- Expanded interior: Its second floor is dozens of zhang high and several mu in area, far exceeding the tower’s exterior dimensions 150.
- Confinement: A spirit chain links the disc ward to Wu Wenxuan’s dantian. Traveling more than thirty li away drains her vital essence and dharma power into it 150.
- Defensive response: Attacking the chamber summons the disc’s defenses; a tiny leaf-shaped light blocks Wu’s strongest sword attack 150.
- Light mechanism: Sunlight focused through a ceiling lens, combined with flames at eight pillars, activates screens bearing ancient writing 157.
- Unclaimed treasure: Mo Chen leaves the third-floor sentient treasure behind because he cannot meet its subduing requirements 158.
Expedition Rules and Hazards
Participation and Incentives
- New access for outsiders: The documented expedition is the first opened to rogue cultivators and cultivators from small sects. True Person Langyue brings more than twenty-four thousand rogue cultivators aboard the Wind-Crossing Ship 110 161.
- Entry fee: Early discussions quote three hundred spirit stones per rogue cultivator 32.
- Sect incentives: Registered disciples receive a thousand chips, a year’s exemption from assignments, triple monthly stipends, and complimentary supplies 91 106.
- Issued supplies: Mo Chen receives Strife Iron Armor, a Ten-League Thought Talisman, a realm map, and a specially made Universe Bag 106.
- Departure ceremony: The Xiangzi Sacrifice includes second-tier demon-beast meat; participants are also promised soup made from tender Sky-Climbing Vine shoots 91 108.
- Conflicting interval accounts: Earlier explanations describe expeditions every five years, while the later formation account specifies twenty years 87 91.
Entry, Collection, and Return
- Random arrival: One-time teleportation devices send entrants to uncertain locations inside the third layer. Sect maps mark rendezvous points in green 106 110 111.
- Strict time limit: Entrants must return after fifteen days, during an exit window lasting six double-hours 111.
- Controlled departure: Refreshing spirit powder makes the formation identify treated disciples as Golden Core cultivators, forcing them to rely on the Alliance’s Dragon Scale to leave 111.
- Herb surrender: Every spiritual herb and medicinal plant must be handed to the sect. Other finds become personal property only after inspection 111.
- Inspection reaches Storage Bags: The tracking reaction makes bags containing realm-derived materials glow despite their spatial restrictions 107.
- Restricted fighting near the exit: Immortal Alliance law prohibits combat within two hundred li of the realm’s boundary 189.
Dangers
- Other cultivators: Ambushes, robbery, and fights over herbs and inspection-evasion materials are recurring threats 124 159 165 184.
- Ancient wards: Sunken Spirit Valley’s illusory vegetation deceives Mo Chen into gathering nonexistent plants 148.
- Powerful native beasts: The inner region contains creatures stronger than the cultivators normally allowed to enter 112 169.
- Missed departure: Sect stewards warn that previous entrants who stayed behind never returned. Wu Wenxuan nevertheless survives inside for thirty years, showing that remaining alive does not necessarily mean escaping 111 149.
- Low survival: Reported survival rates commonly range from ten to thirty percent. The Thousand-Jun Ring returns with only 142 of the 498 disciples it carried out 105 106 200.
