Ch. 41Transforming the Spell Seals Again
Plot points and events
- The teahouse owner’s two overlapping trapping formations seal Mo Chen, Yuan Ming, Xiao Liuwan, Yang Yiliu, and three giant serpent demons inside the cavern. Mo Chen cannot break through or cross the barriers with his flying sword or earth-escape technique.
- The formations separate Mo Chen and Yuan Ming from the women, leaving Xiao Liuwan and Yang Yiliu in the serpents’ reach. Despite Xiao Liuwan’s attacks and defenses, the pythons’ tough scales and poisonous breath overwhelm her. One serpent crushes and kills Yang Yiliu; another swallows Xiao Liuwan.
- The serpents then feed on Shen Lekang’s corpse and become sluggish. Mo Chen uses the respite to recover and observes that the formations are weakening. Yuan Ming is later incapacitated by poison, and his formation eventually fades.
- The remaining formation traps Mo Chen with the three serpents. He uses his previously subdued serpent as a distraction, retreats behind earthen shields, and fills the enclosed space with restraining vines. The serpents’ poison mist is weakened after repeated use, and Mo Chen’s fire-based cultivation lets him neutralize it.
- Taking advantage of the serpents’ post-feeding lethargy, Mo Chen binds them and uses the Spirit Beast Rebinding Art to bring all three under his control. He ends the chapter with four serpent demons in his collection, including the one he captured earlier.
Character developments and interactions
- Mo Chen shifts from trying to rescue the others to concentrating on survival once escape proves impossible. He remains resourceful under pressure, turning the owner’s trap against him and securing a major gain. His final satisfaction is undercut by a callous willingness to prioritize his own benefit over his companions.
- Xiao Liuwan fights bravely with her sword, vines, and earthen shields, but poison and the serpents’ strength steadily wear her down. She looks toward Mo Chen before being swallowed, though the formation prevents him from helping.
- Yang Yiliu panics and calls for Xiao Liuwan’s help, but Xiao is already pinned down. Yang is killed by the eighth-level serpent.
- Yuan Ming is left isolated in the other formation and eventually collapses from poisoning. The chapter does not reveal his fate after that.
- Mo Chen’s interactions with the others are largely defined by separation: he tries to assist the women but cannot reach them, then must act alone. His eventual “victory” comes through subduing the very beasts that killed his companions.
Significant themes
- Betrayal and exploitation: The treasure expedition was a deliberate scheme by the teahouse owner to use the cultivators as food for his serpents.
- Survival and self-interest: Mo Chen’s priorities narrow to staying alive, and his grim response to the others’ deaths emphasizes the ruthless logic of this world.
- Ingenuity and reversal: Mo Chen wins not through brute force, but by recognizing the serpents’ weakness after feeding and adapting his techniques accordingly.
- Irony and unintended consequences: The trap meant to strengthen the teahouse owner’s beasts instead leaves them in Mo Chen’s hands.
