Ch. 241Edict, God-Sealing Art!

Key plot points and events

  • On Phoenix Perch Mountain, Xuanming, Feng Xi, and the Wutong Tree God merge Southern Bright Separation Fire, wutong wood qi, and Samadhi True Fire. Their combined power produces lifelike creatures and, eventually, a self-sustaining gray phoenix formed through a supreme-polarity structure.
  • Their work becomes a path for deeper cultivation. The three enter prolonged seclusion, guiding their unified power from supreme polarity toward primordial substance and gaining profound insights into the laws of creation.
  • While Xuanming is occupied, Li Zizai and Longevity the Spirit Deer grow bored, leave Phoenix Perch Mountain, and sneak out of Court the Phoenix City in a manure cart.
  • Floating Cloud Mountain absorbs the remaining dragon essence and undergoes a major advancement, expanding into a thirty-thousand-li immortal mountain. Truth-Seeking Abbey’s disciples help protect and regulate it, while the Yellow-Horned Immortal and Taiyi establish the Netherworld Bureau within its earth veins.
  • The mountain’s successful advancement allows both gods to become Great Gods. Xuanming senses the danger of the undertaking and asks the Gouchen Emperor to oversee it. The event strengthens the abbey’s standing and gives Xuanming a wealth of divine-path insights.
  • A month later, with the gray phoenix’s evolution apparently complete, Xuanming traces a profound rune into its body and declares, “By edict!”

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming guides the fire-and-wood fusion, benefits most from its return to primordial unity, and continues testing how far its evolution can go. He also supports Floating Cloud Mountain’s advancement by arranging protection.
  • Feng Xi advances through the path of myriad fires returning to origin; the Wutong Tree God explores wood and fire nurturing one another. Both cooperate closely with Xuanming.
  • Li Zizai and Longevity form an unruly pair: Li’s youthful restlessness grows, while Longevity eagerly joins the escape.
  • The Truth-Seeking Abbey’s disciples return from their travels with distinct gains: Xuanxu develops an earth-immortal bearing; Xuan Kong creates the “Food Is Heaven” ability; Xuan Yin becomes a formidable battle-tested swordsman; Xuan Yang strengthens his body and crafting reputation. Others also progress, and Chang’anzi and Chang Ning become Primordial Heaven True Persons.
  • The Yellow-Horned Immortal and Taiyi work with the abbey’s cultivators to stabilize the mountain. Their breakthroughs, alongside Xuanming’s power, leave the abbey with four Spirit Refining-level powers.

Significant themes

  • Cooperation and shared cultivation: The three powers’ union yields insights none could achieve as readily alone, while coordinated effort also enables Floating Cloud Mountain’s safe transformation.
  • Growth through distinct paths: The cultivators and gods advance through individual disciplines—fire, earth, food, combat, crafting, and divine governance.
  • Building lasting foundations: Floating Cloud Mountain becomes both a spiritual stronghold and the center of the Soul-Calming Bureau’s future effort to connect with the netherworld.
  • Creation and transformation: The chapter’s major developments—from the self-sustaining phoenix to the mountain’s expansion—show how disciplined cultivation can reshape living beings, landscapes, and institutions.

Ch. 242At the Dawn of Antiquity, Gods and the Dao Were One

Key plot points and events

  • Xuanming’s decree and the combined forces of Heaven and Earth, Feng Xi, and the Wutong Tree God bring a phoenix into being. Though Xuanming expected a golden phoenix, the process produces an Ice Phoenix.
  • Xuanming appoints her the Water God of Jade Beauty Mountain. With a portion of Phoenix Clan merit and the mountain’s water origins, she gains divine authority, though her cultivation remains weak and she must train to become a true water god.
  • Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree God help conceal the event from the rest of the Phoenix Clan, agreeing to present the Ice Phoenix as an old, hidden lineage member.
  • Through several days of study, the three discover that the Ice Phoenix emerged from their exploration of primordial unity: vitality-bearing forces within a chaotic state enabled creation, while yang’s extreme naturally gave birth to yin.
  • Xuanming asks them to keep his God-Sealing Art and newfound power of creation secret. They agree, recognizing both the value of their alliance and their shared interests.
  • After returning to his guest courtyard, Xuanming rests and reflects on three gains: mastery of Samadhi True Fire, a deeper understanding of primordial unity, and renewed clarity about his Dao. He realizes his true aspiration is to cultivate Floating Cloud Mountain and the Truth-Seeking Abbey.

Character development and interactions

  • Xuanming demonstrates extraordinary authority by creating life and investing a god without relying on the Divine Dynasty. His companions’ respect for him deepens. He credits them for helping him glimpse creation, while they attribute his achievement to his own fortune and insight.
  • Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree God move from astonishment to respect and quietly agree to build an alliance with Xuanming. Both gain from the Dao exploration: Feng Xi’s bottleneck loosens, while the Tree God withdraws to absorb her insights.
  • The Ice Phoenix regards Xuanming, Feng Xi, and the Tree God as her parents and gratefully bows to them. She accepts her new divine role but must cultivate to overcome her weak foundations.
  • Xuanming’s companions help reassure the Phoenix Clan and protect the secret, showing trust and cooperation.

Significant themes

  • Creation and transformation: Life arises from the interplay of primordial chaos, vitality, and the balance of yin and yang.
  • Divine authority and the Dao: Xuanming’s breakthrough shows how profound understanding can let the laws respond to a decree.
  • Secrecy and alliance: Shared interests and trust bind the characters together while they conceal a world-changing event.
  • The meaning of ambition: Xuanming rejects grand aspirations in favor of the modest, genuine purpose that brings him peace: his mountain and abbey.

Ch. 243Truth-Seeking Abbey Haunting, a Wisp of Yang Spirit

Key plot points and events

  • During seclusion, Xuanming sends his Peachwood Sword to rescue his disciples Li Zizai and the Spirit Deer Longevity from a great demon. He lets them continue traveling, advising them to be cautious, do good deeds, and use the sword only in an emergency.
  • Xuanming then concentrates on a major breakthrough. His primordial spirit, Dao body, and Dao domain strengthen; the three flowers of essence, qi, and spirit begin to develop.
  • Meanwhile, a white-haired old Daoist begins appearing around Truth-Seeking Abbey at night. His encounters frighten some young disciples, but also help others: he demonstrates swordsmanship and reads scripture alongside one who cannot sleep.
  • The abbey’s senior Daoists investigate the haunting. Suspecting it might be Xuanming, they use his soul lamp in a ritual to locate the apparition.
  • Multiple copies of Xuanming appear, explaining that they are wisps of his yang spirit. He has returned to revisit the abbey, recover his original resolve, and reclaim the soul within his lamp to perfect his spirit flower.
  • Xuanming reunites warmly with the senior Daoists and says he expects to return within a year. After he departs, they realize he has attained a yang spirit and is approaching the milestone of “Three Flowers Gather at the Crown.”

Character developments

  • Xuanming shows growing confidence as a master: he permits Li Zizai and Longevity to learn through travel rather than keeping them sheltered. His cultivation advances dramatically, bringing him close to a major breakthrough.
  • Li Zizai and Longevity accept his guidance and begin a more independent journey, despite having sneaked away without permission.
  • The abbey’s True Persons, initially baffled and wary, move from suspicion to joy and awe as they discover the haunting is evidence of Xuanming’s extraordinary progress.
  • The young disciples respond differently to the apparition: some are terrified, while others benefit from his quiet guidance.

Significant themes

  • Growth through hardship: Xuanming believes his disciples must face the wider world and learn from setbacks.
  • Mentorship and trust: He offers guidance and protection without preventing his students from becoming independent.
  • Cultivation and transformation: The chapter depicts spiritual progress as a process of refining and expanding body, spirit, and Dao.
  • The uncanny as a sign of progress: What seems like a haunting is ultimately a manifestation of Xuanming’s advancing spiritual power.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming rescues Li Zizai and Longevity, gives them practical advice, and leaves them his sword for emergencies.
  • The old Daoist apparition alternately frightens, comforts, and teaches the abbey’s young disciples.
  • The True Persons investigate the apparitions together, then greet Xuanming with surprise and respect when his identity is revealed.
  • Xuanming exchanges courteous words with the Taiyi Savior God and bids farewell to his fellow Daoists, promising to return soon.

Ch. 244Taishang Emerges, Ancestor of All Essence

Key events

  • Xuanming’s three flowers of essence, qi, and spirit bloom with nine petals, bringing his original, personal, and Dao hearts into unity. A seed grows from the essence flower and produces an old Daoist, who names himself Taishang Dongzhen, Dao Lord of Taiji Heaven and master of supreme polarity.
  • Taishang enters Taiji Heaven, giving the realm a soul and helping it develop into a living, three-thousand-li world. After Xuanming grants his assent, Taishang establishes the Dao palace Mysterious Capital.
  • The breakthrough unleashes three days and nights of spiritual energy and starlight across Phoenix Perch Mountain, benefiting Xuanming and the surrounding Phoenix Clan cultivators.
  • Xuanming emerges far stronger, with a ten-thousand-zhang primordial spirit and a deeper grasp of the Dao. He realizes Taishang is mysteriously connected to him and can help him comprehend principles and develop Taiji Heaven, though Taishang refuses to explain his origins.
  • Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree Goddess congratulate Xuanming. He thanks them for their earlier demonstrations of the Dao, and the three exchange polite praise before agreeing to spar.
  • In their fierce joint attack, Xuanming calmly defeats Feng Xi’s fire-based domain and the Tree Goddess’s Wutong domain with his fly-whisk and primordial-unity Dao domain. Impressed by his power, both women become more eager to ally with him.
  • Xuanming prepares to leave Phoenix Perch Mountain with Mysterious Swallow, but Feng Xi produces an item before he can depart.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming reaches a major cultivation milestone, gaining extraordinary strength and confidence while remaining courteous toward those who helped him. His connection to Taishang becomes an important new mystery.
  • Taishang Dongzhen emerges as a distinct Daoist being with authority over Taiji Heaven and the power to cultivate its growth. His identity and relationship to Xuanming remain deliberately unclear.
  • Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree Goddess move from hosts and helpers to prospective allies. Their spar with Xuanming reveals both their formidable abilities and his clear superiority.

Significant themes

  • Cultivation as integration and transformation: the three flowers’ union signifies the harmonizing of Xuanming’s different aspects and a profound elevation of his Dao.
  • Creation and order: Taishang’s arrival gives Taiji Heaven a soul, while his bows to heaven, earth, and humanity establish the realm through reverence and balance.
  • Mystery and destiny: Taishang’s unexplained origins suggest a deeper connection between Xuanming, the Dao, and the world he has created.
  • Power and relationships: Xuanming’s strength is demonstrated not only through combat but also through gratitude, courtesy, and the respect that draws potential allies.

Ch. 245A Phoenix Clan Powerhouse, Meeting the Half-Immortal Again

Key plot points and events

  • Feng Xi gives Xuanming a copy of the Phoenix ancestor’s cultivation insights to congratulate him on reaching Three Flowers Gather at the Crown. The Wutong Tree Deity also offers rare ten-thousand-year spirit wood, transformed into pure wood essence.
  • Xuanming accepts both gifts, promises to help the Phoenix Clan if needed, and gives them his own insights into the Great Dao of fire. He agrees to return when Mysterious Swallow advances to Spirit Refining.
  • After Xuanming leaves, Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree Deity visit their sleeping ancestor, Feng Yan. Feng Yan praises Xuanming’s exceptional talent and says befriending him may benefit the clan’s future.
  • The half-immortal Zhong Neng appears before Feng Yan, revealing an old, antagonistic history between them. Feng Yan accuses him of deceitful fortune-telling and resents being drawn into cooperation because Xuanming matters to the Phoenix Clan.
  • Xuanming meets Zhong Neng again in Court the Phoenix City. Zhong explains that, after fleeing the Taiping Rebellion, he prospered in the South, entered cultivation through the Way of Changes, and recently became a True Person. Xuanming verifies much of the account through divination.
  • Zhong gives Xuanming a gourd of homemade spiritual wine. Xuanming checks it, finds it ordinary, and continues toward Li Zizai. After one sip on the road, however, he suddenly freezes.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming receives valuable recognition and gifts, responds with direct gratitude, and strengthens his relationship with the Phoenix Clan. His caution remains evident: he checks Zhong’s story and inspects the wine.
  • Feng Xi and the Wutong Tree Deity act strategically to cultivate a bond with a rising powerhouse. Feng Yan confirms that Xuanming’s promise and friendship could help elevate the clan.
  • Zhong Neng reappears as a successful cultivator, though his playful reunion with Xuanming contrasts with the old feud revealed between him and Feng Yan.
  • Mysterious Swallow, whose bloodline has awakened for a fourth time, briefly chases Zhong’s Rat Monster but calms down when she recognizes Zhong as Xuanming’s acquaintance.

Significant themes

  • Alliance and reciprocity: Gifts and promises build ties between Xuanming and the Phoenix Clan.
  • The value of talent and foresight: Feng Yan sees Xuanming’s potential as a future mighty cultivator and an opportunity for the clan.
  • Trust tempered by caution: Xuanming welcomes old friends but independently verifies their claims and offerings.
  • Comedic contrast: Zhong’s flamboyant charm and the restaurant’s uproar over the unpaid bill lighten the chapter’s serious cultivation politics.

Ch. 246Meeting the Nine-Tailed Fox Again, an Invitation from Peaceful Heaven

Plot points and events

  • Xuanming refines a mouthful of wine given to him by the half-immortal Zhong Neng. Its powerful energy improves his meridians, magic power, bones, and Primordial Spirit.
  • Realizing Zhong Neng—and the blind beggar Ji Yuan—are formidable figures, Xuanming grows suspicious of their generosity. He checks the gourd for hidden dangers with the Supreme Daoist and yellow court qi; finding none, he accepts their goodwill for now.
  • For over half a year, Xuanming wanders through Great Xuan’s southern regions, practicing Mortal-world Tempering of the Heart by experiencing many lives and customs. He also drinks the spirit wine nightly, steadily benefiting from it.
  • Just as he prepares to seek out his wayward disciple Li Zizai, Xuanming detects and captures Hu Ji, a Nine-Tailed Fox demon and former guardian of the Peaceful Heaven Sect.
  • Hu Ji says the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master has personally sent her to invite Xuanming to the sect for a discussion. Xuanming is wary but releases his grip enough to hear her out.

Character developments

  • Xuanming grows stronger through the wine and shows continued caution toward powerful strangers, while choosing to trust his own cultivation and deal with future threats as they arise. His extended travels broaden his understanding of ordinary people, scholars, demons, and martial artists.
  • Hu Ji has advanced to the Yang Spirit realm since her earlier encounter with Xuanming. She is also struck by how far he has progressed: he has attained the rare realm of three flowers gathering at the crown and surpassed her expectations.

Significant themes

  • Caution and trust: Gifts from powerful strangers may signal goodwill or hidden motives, so Xuanming verifies the wine before accepting it.
  • Cultivation through experience: Xuanming’s practice involves not only improving his power but immersing himself in the lives and customs of the mortal world.
  • Contrasting cultures: The chapter highlights differences between northern and southern scholars, demons, and martial traditions.
  • Power and shifting status: Hu Ji’s surprise underscores Xuanming’s dramatic rise and the changing balance between former acquaintances.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming carefully weighs the motives of Zhong Neng and Ji Yuan, then chooses not to pursue them.
  • During his travels, he engages with people from many walks of life, adopting different scholarly and martial personas.
  • When Hu Ji appears, Xuanming immediately restrains and interrogates her, remaining unmoved by her pleas until she explains that the invitation comes directly from the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master.

Ch. 247Ancient Great Sheng, Yellow Heaven and Yellow Horn

Key plot points and events

  • Xuanming accepts an invitation from the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master, recognizing that refusing a powerful figure could endanger his abbey and allies.
  • A nine-tailed fox guides him through a hidden entrance into the Peaceful Heaven Sect’s vast private world.
  • Xuanming discovers that the sect and its people worship his Yellow-Horned Earth God incarnation as Yellow Heaven. The fox explains that the Dao Master identified the two as one, prompting widespread worship.
  • As she shows him around, Xuanming encounters a society modeled on the ancient Great Sheng Divine Dynasty: humans, demons, ghosts, and gods live, work, trade, marry, and compete together under shared laws.
  • The world’s evident prosperity and contentment help Xuanming understand why the Peaceful Heaven Sect seeks to restore Great Sheng. His growing interest leads him to agree to meet the Dao Master. The chapter ends as they approach the Dao Master’s ancient palace.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming begins wary of the invitation and uneasy about becoming entangled with the sect. His curiosity and caution gradually give way to admiration for the small world’s society and the ideal it represents.
  • The nine-tailed fox acts as a courteous, perceptive guide. She explains the sect’s connection to Yellow Heaven and Great Sheng, while carefully steering Xuanming toward the Dao Master once she sees his interest.
  • The fox also reveals personal ties linking the sect to Xuanming’s circle: her niece is Chang Ning, and her elder brother was once involved with Xuan Su.

Significant themes

  • Equality and coexistence: The world portrays social standing as based on ability and virtue rather than race or gender.
  • Idealism and political ambition: The sect’s restoration project may be more than a bid for power; it is rooted in a remembered vision of peaceful, flourishing society.
  • Belief and divine influence: The sect’s worship of Yellow Heaven explains the rapid growth of Xuanming’s divine incarnation.
  • History and decline: The contrast between Great Sheng’s celebrated pluralism and later eras’ exclusion highlights the loss of an ideal civilization.

Ch. 248At last, the Dao Master, gazing at Azure Heaven

Plot points

  • Xuanming arrives at the Peaceful Heaven Palace for his first formal meeting with a truly powerful cultivator. The nine-tailed fox demon, now composed and solemn in Daoist robes, invites him in and encourages him to consider bringing Chang Ning to the Peaceful Heaven Sect. She hopes the girl can overcome the burden of being half-demon and meet her father, but promises not to force her to join.
  • Inside the palace, Xuanming enters a strange realm of nothing but yellow. He walks carefully and respectfully to meet the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master, who praises his cultivation and his Yellow Court Outer Scenery Scripture.
  • The Dao Master asks whether Xuanming has written an Inner Scenery Scripture. Xuanming admits he has no clear direction yet.
  • The Dao Master then asks Xuanming to examine the sky and wonders aloud whether the sky, like other ancient things, could become a spirit. Xuanming sees nothing unusual.
  • The Dao Master offers Xuanming access to the Peaceful Heaven Sect’s vast collection of scriptures if he joins. Xuanming refuses, remaining loyal to the Truth-Seeking Abbey and insisting that he wants no part in either side’s political struggle.
  • The Dao Master tests his resolve with overwhelming pressure. Xuanming holds firm and offers to swear by his Dao Heart that he intends only to roam freely and pursue the Great Dao.
  • Recognizing something of his former self in Xuanming, the Dao Master asks whether he would join if promised discipleship and eventual cultivation to the level of a mighty cultivator.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming shows humility before the Dao Master but also strong conviction. He is pleased by praise for his scripture, yet refuses to trade his independence or allegiance to the Truth-Seeking Abbey for access to the sect’s resources.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master is courteous and discerning, but tests Xuanming’s loyalties and resolve. His reflection on his own youthful ideals suggests regret that his former freedom and devotion to the Dao have been lost.
  • The nine-tailed fox demon reveals a gentler, more responsible side: she is concerned for Chang Ning’s emotional well-being and emphasizes that the girl will not be pressured to join the sect.

Significant themes

  • Independence versus institutional loyalty: Xuanming wants to pursue the Dao without being drawn into factional conflict.
  • The cost of ambition and power: The Dao Master’s memories hint that worldly commitments may have taken him far from his youthful ideals.
  • Respect and conviction: Xuanming treats the Dao Master with deference without surrendering his principles.
  • The unknowable Dao: The unchanged sky and the possibility that it might possess a spirit suggest mysteries beyond Xuanming’s current understanding.

Ch. 249Am I the Peaceful Heaven Sect's Fallback?

Plot points and events

  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master again invites Xuanming to join the Peaceful Heaven Sect. Xuanming refuses, unwilling to trade his independence for a place among the powerful.
  • The Dao Master asks what Xuanming thinks of the sect’s Microcosm. Xuanming praises its peaceful, egalitarian society, which has changed his formerly negative impression of the sect.
  • Asked whether he would protect the Microcosm if the sect fell, Xuanming distinguishes its people from the institution: he might safeguard the inhabitants, but would not protect the sect or those responsible for its bloodshed.
  • The Dao Master tests Xuanming’s honesty, then asks why the Microcosm’s people worship the Yellow-Horned Immortal. Xuanming infers that the Dao Master is preparing a refuge for them in case the sect collapses.
  • The Dao Master’s parable of a storm-eroded, insect-hollowed mountain confirms the danger: the sect faces pressure from enemies outside and corruption within.
  • Xuanming asks why the Dao Master does not reform the sect. The Dao Master says there is not enough time: the White Jade Capital will appear in just over fifty years, bringing a revival of spiritual energy, reunification under the Divine Dynasty, and a chain of crises in which even mighty figures may perish. The Dao Master also has little time left for his own plans.

Character development and interactions

  • Xuanming shows independence, moral discernment, and growing compassion for the Microcosm’s people. He speaks candidly despite the Dao Master’s power and insists on understanding the risks before accepting any responsibility.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master appears pragmatic and farsighted, prioritizing ordinary lives over the sect’s survival. Rather than pressuring Xuanming, he tests his judgment and reveals the danger facing the sect.
  • Their exchange shifts from recruitment to a frank discussion of loyalty, responsibility, and the possibility of the sect’s collapse. The Dao Master seems to regard Xuanming as a potential protector—not of the sect, but of the people who depend on it.

Significant themes

  • Personal independence versus allegiance: Xuanming resists joining a powerful organization even when it could advance his prospects.
  • People versus institutions: He separates the welfare of the Microcosm’s inhabitants from the Peaceful Heaven Sect’s record and fate.
  • Honesty and moral accountability: Xuanming refuses to excuse the sect’s past violence, while the Dao Master invites an unvarnished answer.
  • Decay beneath apparent strength: The hollow mountain symbolizes a sect weakened by both external enemies and internal exploitation.
  • Impending upheaval: The coming White Jade Capital promises renewal as well as danger, making the Dao Master’s preparations urgent.

Ch. 250Celebratory Cloud Daoist Visions: The Dao Master Battles Ji Yuan

Key plot points and events

  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master tells Xuanming that if he becomes a mighty one before the White Jade Capital appears, he will reveal everything. If not, the Dao Master will merge several Peaceful Heaven Sect microcosms into Floating Cloud Mountain and seal them so only a mighty one can enter.
  • He explains that he once glimpsed a future calamity through an imprint of the Dao Venerable: Azure Heaven would unleash a world-ending disaster, while a yellow light would shield the world. He believes Xuanming’s divine-path dharma body, the Central Yellow Pole Yellow-Horned Immortal, is Yellow Heaven—the future protector of living beings.
  • The Dao Master invites Xuanming to spend three years in the Peaceful Heaven Horn, offering access to the sect’s million scriptures and half a month of instruction each year. Xuanming accepts and is sent to the Dao Sea Palace.
  • Alone, the Dao Master vows to finish what his master began and bring change to the heavens.
  • Ji Yuan and Half-Immortal Zhong Neng arrive, demanding Xuanming’s release because he is important to their plans. Ji Yuan traps the Dao Master in the Heaven and Earth Chessboard, but the Dao Master breaks out with his Nine-Section Staff and newly revealed Daoist power.
  • Though pressed to release Xuanming, the Dao Master insists he will not harm him and will let him leave after three years. Ji Yuan accepts this, while Zhong Neng leaves angrily after warning the Dao Master not to reveal their affairs.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming learns the true significance of his divine form and the threat of a future calamity. Though alarmed by the burden and by the Dao Master’s demands, he chooses to stay and train.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master reveals himself as a powerful, strategically minded figure who sees potential in Xuanming. His private vow suggests a larger plan against the current heavens, while his contempt for Zhong Neng exposes an intense personal or ideological divide.
  • Ji Yuan confronts the Dao Master but ultimately accepts his assurance that Xuanming is safe, preventing the dispute from escalating.
  • Zhong Neng is protective of Xuanming and impatient with the Dao Master, but yields to Ji Yuan’s restraint.

Significant themes

  • Destiny and responsibility: Xuanming may become the figure destined to protect the world, but he must first grow strong enough to fulfill that role.
  • Knowledge and power: Access to vast scriptures and a mighty one’s guidance are presented as means of preparing for a crisis beyond ordinary understanding.
  • Conflict over the heavens: The Dao Master’s vow to change the heavens hints at a rebellion or upheaval, set against the looming world-ending calamity.
  • Restraint and competing agendas: The characters disagree over Xuanming’s importance and future, but Ji Yuan’s intervention keeps their conflict from becoming a battle.

Ch. 251Reopening the Yellow Court Scripture, Supreme Mystery Heaven Emerges

Key events

  • Xuanming spends six months in Dao Sea Palace, reading nine thousand Daoist scriptures before entering seclusion to study the Jade Scripture of the Central Yellow Court.
  • The scripture reveals a cosmic creation cycle: a white-haired giant creates heaven and earth, guides life through disaster and prosperity, and witnesses repeated destruction and renewal. Each new world becomes more complete until one is eternal, ordered into thirty-six heavens, seventy-two abysses, and one hundred and eight continents.
  • Xuanming realizes the giant is himself across past and future. He understands that past and future cannot be grasped, so he must seize the present.
  • This insight triggers a major breakthrough. His Dao domain, Dao tree, Taiji Heaven, magic-power channels, star acupoints, and primordial spirit all expand or strengthen. The scripture merges with his Dao seed, which cycles through creation and destruction until a stable world forms inside his middle dantian: Supreme Mystery.

Character development

  • Xuanming moves from absorbed study to profound realization, recognizing himself as part of the cycle of cosmic creation and renewal.
  • His cultivation advances dramatically, and he establishes a new inner world, marking a major step toward greater power and completeness.

Significant themes

  • Cycles of creation and destruction: Worlds repeatedly arise, flourish, decline, and return to their origins.
  • Learning through hardship: Living beings survive disasters by understanding nature, adapting, and preparing.
  • Past, present, and future: The past is unrecoverable and the future unknowable; meaningful action lies in the present.
  • Cosmic growth and order: Repeated creation yields increasingly stable worlds, fuller laws, and broader Dao.
  • Inner world as cultivation: Xuanming’s breakthrough mirrors the cosmic process, turning an abstract insight into a world within himself.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming’s only direct interaction is with the white-haired giant—his past and future self—who repeatedly meets his gaze and smiles. Their silent exchange helps him grasp the relationship between time, identity, and the Dao.

Ch. 252Heavenly Stems Perfected, Earthly Fiends Complete

Key plot points and events

  • During a two-month retreat, Xuanming perfects the Primordial Unity Qi Formula, securing a safe path of cultivation to the half-step mighty-being realm. He also completes the latter half of the Heavenly Circuit Spirit-Nurturing Method, which can form star deities in his principal acupoints and eventually give birth to the Great Emperor Ziwei Dharma Body.
  • He completes the thirty-six Heavenly Stems and seventy-two Earthly Fiends Divine Powers. Recognizing clear qi and turbid qi as complementary origins, he understands their union as Primordial Unity—a supreme power encompassing creation and destruction, and capable of drawing on the world-creating power of mighty beings.
  • Xuanming’s Supreme Mystery Heaven has grown to three hundred li across. Its primordial energies let him simulate cosmic formation, evolve the laws of heaven and earth, and transform beings through the Dao.
  • After leaving seclusion, he balances study with leisure: he explores the mountains, spends time disguised as an old tree demon selling fruit, and exchanges insights over wine with the drunken mighty being at Dao Sea Palace.
  • Ten months after entering the palace, Xuanming returns to Peaceful Heaven Palace. The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master fulfills his promise by expounding the Dao for a month. Xuanming’s unstable magic power settles, and his foundation and Dao attainment strengthen.
  • After spending more than a month digesting the teaching, Xuanming prepares to celebrate the New Year. On New Year’s night, his expression changes and he sneers, signaling that something has happened.

Character developments

  • Xuanming makes major advances in cultivation and understanding, gaining greater confidence in his future path while recognizing that his supreme power still holds mysteries beyond his present comprehension. He also shows growing discipline in balancing intense practice with relaxation.
  • The wine-loving mighty being takes an interest in Xuanming’s progress and hopes the Daoist path will flourish. He has also befriended a simple-minded fellow at Truth-Seeking Abbey and arranged to guide him through a tavern persona.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master demonstrates generosity by keeping his promise to teach Xuanming, whose open-mindedness allows him to benefit from a Dao tradition different from his own.

Significant themes

  • Complementarity and unity: Clear and turbid qi, yin and yang, method and art, and creation and destruction unite in Primordial Unity.
  • Learning across traditions: Xuanming’s all-embracing Dao lets him learn from the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master’s distinct path.
  • Balance and cultivation: Rest, conversation, and worldly experience complement focused practice.
  • Mentorship and continuity: The mighty being’s plans to teach another practitioner suggest the passing on of knowledge across generations.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming exchanges Daoist methods and debates the Dao with the drunken mighty being, deepening his understanding of mighty beings and Daoist principles.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master teaches Xuanming through a month-long exposition; Xuanming listens attentively, integrates the teaching, and thanks him afterward.
  • Xuanming politely declines the Nine-Tailed Fox’s New Year invitation and instead celebrates in his rented courtyard, exchanging gifts with acquaintances.

Ch. 253The Old Ancestor of Sword Lake Palace: Li Zizai

Plot points and events

  • In Great Xuan, Li Zizai flees through the mountains on the Spirit Deer Longevity, carrying the unconscious Sword Lake Palace elder Yan Jiu. Dugu Xue, a formidable swordsman from Great Jin, pursues them while Li’s Peachwood Sword and Yan Jiu’s broken sword spirit hold him off.
  • Dugu has spent months defeating Great Xuan’s leading sword masters, maiming or crippling them and damaging their ability to practice the Sword Dao. His victories have built an imposing reputation and momentum; he aims to gather the fortune of both martial worlds and advance his cultivation.
  • At Sword Lake Palace, Yan Jiu fought Dugu for three days and nights but ultimately lost, his sword shattered. The defeat also brought a breakthrough: Yan Jiu grasped a deeper truth of the Sword Dao and neared the next realm.
  • Dugu demanded that Yan Jiu take his own life, threatening to challenge the palace’s remaining Sword Gods if he refused. Li intervened, attacked Dugu, and escaped with Yan Jiu, prompting the current pursuit.
  • After learning what happened, Xuanming looks through the Peachwood Sword and points toward the pursuing Dugu. The chapter ends before the result is revealed.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Zizai emerges as a brave, spontaneous teenager who acts on conscience rather than calculation. His bond with Yan Jiu began two months earlier, when he joined the elder for fish soup and then traveled with him. Their easy companionship grew into sworn brotherhood, making Li an Ancestor Generation senior of Sword Lake Palace.
  • Yan Jiu is an aged but formidable Sword God. Though defeated by the younger Dugu, he turns the breaking of his sword into a moment of insight and renewed advancement. His relationship with Li is affectionate and unusually informal for their age and status.
  • Dugu Xue is depicted as powerful, proud, and ruthless. He deliberately concealed his strength to lure opponents into defeat, then permanently damaged their sword paths. His challenge to Yan Jiu extends his campaign from victory into intimidation and the destruction of Sword Lake Palace’s morale.
  • Xuanming, having reconstructed the events, responds to Li’s actions with mixed feelings and intervenes against Dugu.

Significant themes

  • Courage and conscience: Li risks himself because standing by would leave his heart unsettled.
  • Defeat and growth: Yan Jiu’s loss becomes a catalyst for deeper understanding of the Sword Dao.
  • Pride, ambition, and domination: Dugu’s quest for power is bound up with humiliating others and overwhelming an entire martial world.
  • Chosen bonds: Li and Yan Jiu’s friendship and sworn brotherhood transcend their age difference and formal ranks.

Ch. 254An old friend of the patriarch, the Slate-Horned Azure Ox

Key events

  • Dugu Xue pursues Li Zizai and Longevity the Spirit Deer, unleashing a storm of swords. Li’s magic and the deer’s protection cannot stop him.
  • Li uses a Phoenix Clan feather to summon a Fire Phoenix, which destroys most of the swords but soon fades.
  • The Peachwood Sword reveals its power: a phantom wielding a peach branch disperses Dugu Xue’s attack, seals him, severs his right arm, and pulls him into a spatial fissure.
  • The sword’s master orders Li to return to Floating Cloud Mountain and cultivate. Li realizes his master is the mysterious Peach Blossom Sword God; the sword promptly smacks him for his cheeky remark.
  • In the Microcosm, Xuanming celebrates the New Year, then seeks thousand-year-old thunderstruck wood to upgrade the Peachwood Sword. Daozui directs him to the Greenwood Domain.
  • On the way, Xuanming divines that the patriarch’s old acquaintance—the Jujube Wood Demon—has become a Demon King. He reaches the Greenwood Domain, where its guardian, the Slate-Horned Azure Ox, is waiting for him.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Zizai shows resourcefulness and courage, using his Phoenix feather when overwhelmed, but remains irreverent toward his master. The master’s rebuke—and literal slap—reinforces their familiar, comic dynamic.
  • Dugu Xue, initially confident, recognizes the overwhelming danger posed by a three-flower expert and attempts to flee. He is captured and crippled, though temporarily sealed rather than killed.
  • Xuanming continues to pursue practical improvements to the Peachwood Sword and discovers that the patriarch’s old friend has risen greatly in power.
  • Daozui gives Xuanming straightforward guidance, while the Slate-Horned Azure Ox’s prepared welcome signals a new encounter.

Significant themes

  • The gap between levels of power: Li’s defenses barely slow Dugu Xue, while the Peach Blossom Sword God defeats him with ease.
  • Preparation and resourcefulness: Li’s Phoenix feather saves the group when his own strength proves insufficient.
  • Humor within hierarchy: Li’s irreverence and the master’s slap add levity to an otherwise deadly confrontation.
  • Old ties and changing fortunes: Xuanming’s divination shows that former acquaintances can undergo dramatic transformations over time.

Ch. 255If One Day I Become the Azure Emperor

Key plot points and events

  • Xuanming visits the Slate-Horned Azure Ox’s Greenwood Domain, where he trades an Earth Tier spirit item with the thousand-year-old Peach Tree Demon King for thunderstruck wood.
  • Given permission to remain, Xuanming enters seclusion with ten-thousand-year spirit wood. He first forms the Azure Emperor Dharma Aspect, then continues cultivating in the Domain’s abundant wood essence.
  • After a month, the aspect travels through the Greenwood Domain, gathering vitality and merging wood-element law with the law of spring. It returns to Xuanming’s mountain and forms a cocoon.
  • In late spring, the cocoon breaks open: the Azure Emperor Dharma Aspect has become a Dharma Body, now bearing Xuanming’s own face and a three-colored halo representing early, middle, and late spring.
  • The Dharma Body’s words move the plants and peach demons to offer their essence. It gathers that power into a peach branch bearing three blossoms, then disappears before the Peach Tree Demon King can reach it.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master witnesses the breakthrough and is impressed. Xuanming later returns to the Dao Sea Palace, thanks his hosts, and resumes studying.
  • With the three-year agreement nearly over, Xuanming reflects on his substantial progress and awaits the Dao Master’s next teaching.

Character developments

  • Xuanming advances from forming the Azure Emperor Dharma Aspect to refining it into a Dharma Body. His command of wood and spring laws, Five-Element cultivation, and Revolving Creation also improves.
  • He remains courteous and composed, grateful for the support he receives, while balancing intense cultivation with deliberate periods of rest.
  • The Slate-Horned Azure Ox is shown as hospitable and dependable, warmly accommodating Xuanming.
  • The Peach Tree Demon King willingly contributes essence to the emerging Dharma Body, then arrives too late to meet it.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master recognizes Xuanming’s talent and confirms that his confidence in him was justified.

Significant themes

  • Cultivation through favorable conditions: Xuanming’s breakthrough depends on the spirit wood, the Greenwood Domain’s environment, and his own accumulated understanding.
  • Harmony with nature: His Dharma Body embodies spring’s renewal, and the plants and demons respond willingly to its presence.
  • Preparation and patience: Xuanming continues cultivating after each milestone, building his foundations rather than stopping at the first success.
  • Balance: His quiet boating and fishing contrast with his demanding cultivation, showing the value he places on rest and clarity.

Character interactions

  • The Azure Ox welcomes Xuanming and grants him a place to cultivate; their respectful exchange establishes trust and hospitality.
  • Xuanming and the Peach Tree Demon King conduct a straightforward trade, and later the Demon King’s people willingly contribute essence to the Azure Emperor.
  • The Dao Master observes Xuanming’s breakthrough and praises his judgment; Xuanming, in turn, thanks him and the sect for their support.
  • Xuanming humorously compares the wine-loving Dao Palace figure to his junior brother Xuan Yang, imagining they would get along.

Ch. 256Primordial Change and Taiyi

Summary

Key plot points and events

  • Xuanming meets the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master for a final, three-day-and-three-night discussion of the Dao. Their visions reveal contrasting but related principles: the Dao Master’s mysterious yellow qi gives rise to Earth and then Heaven, while Xuanming’s primordial unity contains Heaven and Earth, yin and yang, and clear and turbid.
  • As the discussion deepens, the Dao Master’s vision stretches across past, present, and future, with three figures anchoring the flow of time. Xuanming realizes that his earlier encounters with illusory versions of his past and future selves had pointed toward the Path of Primordial Change, which he understands as Taiyi—the origin of laws and true essence of the Great Dao.
  • The Dao Master ends their three-year arrangement, telling Xuanming that he must continue his path alone. Xuanming promises to protect the realm if he is able.
  • At the Dao Master’s request, Xuanming introduces him to the Central Yellow Pole Yellow-Horned Immortal. He then leaves them to speak privately and returns to his own palace to meditate on what he has learned.
  • For New Year, Xuanming reunites with friends from many kinds of beings. The Peaceful Heaven Sect sends him a pouch containing copies of its million-book collection, including the Taiping Scripture. Recognizing the gift’s sincerity—and its likely purpose in reinforcing his promise—Xuanming formally thanks the Dao Master before departing.
  • On his journey home, Xuanming is stopped by Qiu Shanhe, a mighty cultivator and grand elder of the Qiu Imperial Clan, accompanied by the Peaceful Heaven Sect’s Young Lord. Qiu Shanhe politely invites him to visit, but accepts his refusal and gives him a communication talisman.
  • The Young Lord questions why Qiu Shanhe did not force Xuanming to stay. Qiu Shanhe reprimands him, explaining that ruling requires wisdom and strategy, not merely strength.

Character developments

  • Xuanming deepens his Dao comprehension and gains a clearer direction for his cultivation. He also shows growing restraint: he honors his commitments, accepts kindness without naivety, and does not pry into the private conversation between the Dao Master and the Yellow-Horned Immortal.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master moves from teacher to peer during their discussion, then ends their formal relationship while giving Xuanming a warning about the entanglement of fortune, calamity, and favors.
  • Qiu Shanhe demonstrates political patience, preferring to build goodwill with Xuanming rather than use force.
  • The Peaceful Heaven Sect’s Young Lord is shown to be talented but impulsive. Qiu Shanhe’s rebuke begins teaching him the judgment expected of a future leader.
  • The Yellow-Horned Immortal is treated as an independent fellow Daoist, underscoring his standing and autonomy.

Significant themes

  • Different paths to the Dao: Xuanming’s primordial unity and the Dao Master’s mysterious yellow are distinct yet overlapping understandings; each benefits from finding shared truths without erasing differences.
  • Insight and timing: Xuanming recognizes the meaning of his earlier visions only after gaining new perspective, suggesting that spiritual guidance may be understood belatedly.
  • Independence in cultivation: Teachers can guide, but each cultivator must ultimately walk their own path.
  • Favors and obligations: Gifts and generosity can be sincere while also carrying expectations; wisdom means recognizing both.
  • Power versus leadership: Strength alone cannot sustain rule. Strategic judgment, patience, and self-control matter just as much.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming and the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master engage as near-equals in a searching exchange that strengthens both their understanding.
  • The Dao Master asks to meet the Yellow-Horned Immortal; Xuanming secures the deity’s consent and then respectfully leaves them to talk.
  • Xuanming’s farewell with the Dao Master combines gratitude with a mutual acknowledgment of future obligations and risks.
  • Qiu Shanhe approaches Xuanming with courtesy and accepts his decision to leave, while the Young Lord’s impatience creates a contrast between forceful ambition and diplomatic restraint.

Ch. 257Return to Truth-Seeking Abbey, Revered by the Four Commanderies

Plot points and events

  • After seven years away, Great True Lord Xuanming returns to Floating Cloud Mountain, now the most influential spiritual center in the Four Commanderies. Truth-Seeking Abbey’s reputation and the worship of Xuanming and its three Great Gods have grown greatly.
  • The mountain responds to his arrival with extraordinary auspicious signs: clouds and radiant light fill the sky, plants bloom out of season, animals gather, and temple statues shine. Daoists and pilgrims recognize that Xuanming has come home.
  • Xuanming reunites with his disciple Li Zizai and the abbey’s generations of Daoists. He spends the day sharing stories and memories with his martial brothers, then sleeps deeply in his familiar courtyard.
  • Li Zizai secretly paints portraits of his sleeping master, intending one for his family and one for Sword Lake Palace, which has honored both master and disciple.
  • After half a month of rest, Xuanming formally accepts Li Zizai as an inner disciple and gives him the Dao name Changyizi, meaning ease and freedom. The chapter ends as Xuanming prepares to present an object.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming returns from his travels transformed by the realization that home is where his heart is at peace. His reunion with the abbey restores his sense of belonging, and he warmly reconnects with his fellow Daoists.
  • Li Zizai has advanced rapidly to become a Primordial Heaven True Person and the abbey’s second-strongest figure. His devotion and playful initiative show in his portrait-making; his formal acceptance as Xuanming’s disciple deepens their bond.
  • Xuanxu and the other senior Daoists welcome Xuanming with affection and respect, sharing the changes and experiences of the years apart.
  • Longevity the Spirit Deer and the Mysterious Swallow rush to reunite, though they quickly disappear together into the woods, providing a lighthearted moment.
  • The generations of Daoists and the pilgrims collectively celebrate Xuanming’s return, showing how his personal presence unites the abbey and its wider community.

Significant themes

  • Home and belonging: Xuanming’s journey ends not merely at a place, but where his heart finds peace.
  • Time deepening relationships: Years apart do not weaken the martial brothers’ affection; shared memories make it richer.
  • Reputation and community: Truth-Seeking Abbey’s growing influence is reflected in the devotion of the people and the mountain’s welcome.
  • Mentorship and continuity: Xuanming’s naming of Changyizi links personal guidance with the abbey’s traditions and hopes for the next generation.

Ch. 258The Dao of Lying Flat: Not Contending Is Contending

Key plot points and events

  • Xuanming presents the abbey with a million-volume Daoist Canon gifted by the Peaceful Heaven Sect, including its foundational Taiping Scripture. He explains that the gift is meant both to secure his future help and to preserve the sect’s teachings should the Peaceful Heaven Sect fall.
  • Xuanxu and the other senior Daoists propose elevating Truth-Seeking Abbey into a foremost Dao lineage. They also plan to pass their offices to younger disciples during the elevation ceremony, freeing themselves to pursue cultivation. Xuanming leaves all arrangements to them.
  • Xuanming continues his relaxed routine, letting spiritual insight arise naturally rather than forcing progress. Though the Jade Scripture of the Inner Yellow Court remains unresponsive, he develops a theory that the inner realm should center on insight and observing the intangible.
  • He and the Wutong Tree Deity establish a teleportation passage between Floating Cloud Mountain and Phoenix Perch Mountain, giving Xuanming another place to rest. He also upgrades his Peachwood Sword into a Dharma Treasure.
  • Over the year, Xuanming’s peaceful, unforced way of life brings major progress: he approaches primordial change, deepens his understanding of Sitting in Forgetfulness, and grasps the principle that “not contending is contending.”
  • The next spring, cultivators from across the Four Commanderies gather at Floating Cloud Mountain for the abbey’s elevation ceremony. Among them is Hai Fengming, now a Spirit Refining cultivator and official in the Divine Capital.

Character developments

  • Xuanming increasingly embraces an unhurried, authentic life. He stops pretending to be detached and simply cultivates, studies, enjoys himself, or rests according to his wishes. This ease deepens his cultivation rather than hindering it.
  • Xuanxu and the senior Daoists show confidence in the abbey’s growing strength and readiness to hand leadership to the next generation.
  • Hai Fengming has advanced in cultivation and risen in imperial service, aided by his work establishing the Soul-Calming Bureau and restoring balance between yin and yang.

Significant themes

  • Non-striving and natural growth: Xuanming’s progress comes from living in accordance with his nature, not forcing enlightenment.
  • The tangible and intangible: Scriptures and practice support one another, while true understanding requires insight beyond material forms.
  • Inheritance and responsibility: The Peaceful Heaven Sect entrusts its teachings to Truth-Seeking Abbey to preserve its legacy, even if the sect itself disappears.
  • Succession and renewal: The abbey’s elevation coincides with its senior leaders preparing to yield authority to younger disciples.

Character interactions

  • Xuanming reassures the Daoists that he will not recklessly endanger himself for the Peaceful Heaven Sect, easing their fears about the gift’s obligations.
  • Xuanxu consults Xuanming about the abbey’s status and leadership transition; Xuanming gives them freedom to decide.
  • Xuanming offers Li Zizai cultivation guidance before returning to his solitary routine.
  • Xuanming and the Wutong Tree Deity cooperate to create the mountain passage, while the gathered cultivators arrive to witness the abbey’s coming elevation.

Ch. 259A Top Dao Lineage, a Rain of Light over the Northern Frontier

Plot and events

  • The Truth-Seeking Abbey celebrates its promotion to a top Dao lineage with a large ceremony on Floating Cloud Mountain. Guests include ancient Dao lineages, clans, sword and saber masters, and other powerful figures. Their arrival reveals how broad Xuanming’s influence has become after eight years of travels.
  • Li Zizai has deliberately made the event grand. He hopes the Abbey’s strength and alliances will discourage the Great Xuan Imperial Court from interfering with Floating Cloud Mountain. The Court’s four Censor Divine Officials attend with gifts, despite strained relations.
  • The Imperial Court formally recognizes the Abbey: Xuanxu receives an edict, the lineage’s name is entered into the Register of the World’s Top Dao Lineages, and the Abbey is granted the robes and jade belt reserved for its leaders.
  • Xuanming leads the Daoists and guests in prayers to three manifested gods. Their blessings bring healing, good harvests, and spiritual deliverance across the Four Commanderies; temples elsewhere spread a rain of light over much of the Northern Frontier.
  • A banquet follows, featuring Xuan Kong’s cooking and Xuan Yang’s wine. As the guests settle in, Xuanming prepares to begin a sermon.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Zizai proves politically astute, using the ceremony both to elevate the Abbey’s prestige and to deter the Imperial Court. He also takes evident pleasure in the status his sect’s growth may bring him.
  • Xuanming remains relaxed amid the spectacle, but his reputation is confirmed by the deference and excitement surrounding him. His silent glance unsettles the visiting officials; later, he presides over the ceremony and blessings.
  • Xuanxu and the Abbey’s Daoists welcome even unwelcome Court representatives with courtesy, balancing their resentment with ceremonial propriety.
  • The visiting factions express respect and gratitude toward the Abbey, while the Court officials are visibly shaken by the unprecedented gathering of Spirit Refining cultivators. The officials’ unease underscores the Imperial Court’s growing suspicion.
  • The guests follow the Abbey’s lead in offering incense, making the ceremony a rare display of cooperation among different traditions and factions.

Significant themes

  • Power and political legitimacy: Formal recognition brings status, but the Abbey’s network and strength are what make the Court hesitate.
  • Influence built through relationships: Xuanming’s past travels have created alliances that gather around the Abbey.
  • Ritual as collective benefit: The ceremony’s prayers produce tangible blessings for ordinary people, not merely prestige for the sect.
  • Courtesy amid rivalry: The Abbey maintains public civility despite mistrust, while the grand occasion makes the balance of power unmistakable.

Ch. 260The Central Yellow Court Entered Heaven and Earth, Roaming Through Time

Chapter summary

Xuanming expounds the Jade Scripture of the Central Yellow Court to an assembly at True Mystery Peak. The Dao’s resonance reaches across Floating Cloud Mountain, but each listener understands according to their perseverance, insight, fortune, and Dao Heart. The teaching produces spectacular visions and inspires beings of many kinds to cultivate. Xuanming is swept into a profound state of communion with the Dao, and his scripture leaves an imprint on heaven and earth, earning him further blessings from the Great Dao.
His Primordial Spirit enters the Mysterious-Female Dao Sea, a rare domain linking the Heavenly, Earthly, and Human Daos. He realizes that the Three Powers are out of balance: the Human Dao is dominant, while the Heavenly Dao is damaged and the Earthly Dao incomplete. The Yellow Court Scripture helps restore that balance. He also sees rivers representing the Daos of powerful beings across history, including the Night Demon Old Ancestor and an elder of the Qiu Imperial Clan, but quickly averts his gaze to avoid attracting their attention. His Primordial Unity Law then absorbs laws from the Dao Sea.
As the teaching continues, many listeners reach their limits, and Xuanming does too. His law leaves the sea and enters the River of Time, where he gains insight into the Great Dao of Time. Unable to travel beyond the present, he connects the Central Yellow Court Scripture with the Yellow Court’s Outer Scenery scripture, forming vessels that let him move between the present and the past.
Crossing into the past, Xuanming witnesses his own birth and hears his adoptive father name him a third-generation disciple of the Truth-Seeking Abbey. He then discovers a horrifying succession of earlier lives: he has been reincarnated as humans, deities, demons, devils, ghosts, and Witches, in varied forms and circumstances. In every life, he pursued the Dao and died—often as a sacrifice. The chapter ends as he travels farther upstream, reaching the fifteen-hundred-year mark and reacting with shock.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xuanming moves from teaching the Dao to directly experiencing its deepest mysteries. His insight expands into the balance of the Three Powers, the laws of the cosmos, and time itself. His discovery of countless sacrificial past lives unsettles him and raises questions about the pattern behind his reincarnations.
  • The listeners respond according to their individual capacities: many advance in cultivation, while others can no longer follow the increasingly profound teaching.
  • Xuanming and his father are briefly reunited in the past through the vision of his naming. His father’s sternness softens into tenderness as he welcomes the newborn into the Abbey.
  • The Night Demon Old Ancestor and the Qiu Imperial Clan elder are glimpsed as living mighty beings. Xuanming avoids engaging them, recognizing the danger of their notice.

Significant themes

  • Cultivation depends on inner qualities: perseverance, comprehension, fortune, and a steadfast Dao Heart matter more than aptitude alone.
  • Cosmic imbalance and restoration: the Three Powers are unequal, and Xuanming’s scripture contributes to repairing what is deficient.
  • The cost of pursuing the Dao: across many lives, Xuanming’s pursuit repeatedly ends in sacrifice and death.
  • Time, identity, and reincarnation: the River of Time reveals a self far larger and stranger than Xuanming had imagined, suggesting that his present life is part of an immense cycle.
