The thief of four kingdoms

Before meeting Zhang Yuan, Xiao Yuanjun spent five years stealing cultivation resources from aristocratic clans across Ling, Jing, Wen, and Ya. Every notable immortal clan in those kingdoms lost at least one Earthly Baleful Force to her; the Wenshui Deng and Ya Cui also lost Heavenly Dippers. Despite remaining at Qi Refinement, she could infiltrate their estates with extraordinary ease 19 256.

Her first cultivation trial was the Beggar Trial. Li Houxuan later sought her account of passing it and offered a generous reward. Her second trial, the Disciple Trial, designated Zhang Yuan as its subject, making their initial meeting part of her own advancement requirements 11 153.

Taking Zhang Yuan as her disciple

Xiao Yuanjun finds Zhang Yuan dying in a ruined temple and tests his understanding of cultivation. Rather than conventional cultivation stages, she describes the social categories of “ant,” “fellow daoist,” and “senior.” His addition of the “young friend”—a weak cultivator with powerful backing—amuses her enough to offer him discipleship 2.

She grants his request to kill Li Jiehua, then discovers that her victim was the Eastern Bian Li clan head’s only son. Her restorative qi keeps Zhang Yuan alive for only a month, so she teaches him her self-created cultivation method and helps him refine Stolen-Life Baleful Intent to restore his body 2 3 7.

Xiao Yuanjun’s defining trait is unwavering confidence in her comprehension and future greatness. She rejects claims that a problem is impossible and treats even contests with powerful opponents as opportunities to build the prestige needed for Dao attainment. Her confidence can become openly coercive: she makes True Person Queyin choose between a contest and surrendering the sect’s treasury 269 515.

Her bravado does not eliminate caution. After killing Li Jiehua, she flees thousands of miles, checks for pursuit, seals a mountain cave, and conceals both heavenly secrets and karma. Against Li Houjin, she uses a temporary power increase and an illusion to escape rather than attempting an unwinnable direct fight 7 24.

With Zhang Yuan, she is playful, sleepy, affectionate, and sometimes careless. She takes naps instead of immediately answering cultivation questions, accidentally exposes his concealed name, and repeatedly drapes herself over him.
