Ch. 361Those Three Ancestors Were Just Too Hidebound
Plot points and events
- Zhang Yuan reunites with Cui Yuanxi in a ruined temple. She jokingly accuses him of being an impostor because he calls her “Miss Cui” instead of “Miss Yuanxi,” then admits she only wanted to hear him use the more familiar name.
- Cui Yuanxi’s Third Uncle, Cui Wenshan, greets Zhang Yuan and Xiao Yuanjun. Grateful to Zhang for rescuing him in the past, he had once gathered ten Celestial People to help avenge Zhang, but arrived too late to find him.
- Wenshan leaves with the Ling Kingdom’s badly injured Crown Prince, giving Zhang and Cui Yuanxi time alone. Zhang clears away the corpses and relights the fire.
- Cui Yuanxi explains that her father rarely lets her leave home. She is traveling with Wenshan only because the war’s changing course has created an opportunity to gain experience. Although she has become a Celestial Person, her family’s restrictions have grown tighter.
- At the Cui Immortal Estate, the clan’s True Lords discuss their efforts to keep Yuanxi from pursuing Zhang. They believe that a powerful, unidentified person is especially interested in him, making it impossible for the Cui to compete openly.
- The True Lords also discuss Zhang’s supposed betrothal to the Eastern Bian Li Clan and the imminent merging of realms. With war spreading and powerful Celestial People emerging from seclusion, they expect a decisive struggle soon.
Character developments and interactions
- Cui Yuanxi is more mature after months of study and chess with her father, but remains eager to see Zhang. Her playful familiarity with him contrasts with her frustration at being confined.
- Zhang Yuan responds patiently to Yuanxi’s teasing and treats her warmly. His reunion with Wenshan confirms their mutual respect and gratitude.
- Cui Wenshan is openly supportive of Yuanxi’s interest in Zhang and hopes to create chances for them to become closer, unlike the clan’s cautious ancestors.
- Cui Yuanxi’s father and the True Lords are conflicted: they recognize her feelings but try to restrain her because of Zhang’s importance to someone far more powerful.
Significant themes
- Personal desire versus family control: Yuanxi’s affection and wish for independence clash with her family’s protective restrictions.
- Romance amid political maneuvering: Zhang’s relationships are entangled with clan ambitions, a rumored betrothal, and powerful outside interests.
