Ch. 41[Myriad Coexistence] Still Offered Far Too Many Tricks
Plot and key events
- The Black-Robed Elder attacks Zhang Yuan with [Mirage Wind], a deadly divine ability that conjures a black, wind-made dragon.
- Zhang stands his ground. Through [Myriad Coexistence], he has silently switched Xiao Yuanjun’s attached ability from [Severing Past and Present, Leaving or Staying] to [Ninefold Harmonizing Qi]. Its protective, healing qi neutralizes the attack, leaving him unharmed.
- The Elder is baffled that Zhang seems to possess a fourth divine ability. Zhang then switches to [Fivefold Body-Rending Qi] and kills him, reducing his body to a skeleton.
- Zhang reflects that he cannot yet use the full power of [Fivefold Body-Rending Qi] because he has not mastered its underlying principles; the other attached abilities are limited mainly by his own cultivation realm.
- Chen Qinkuai, who had been unconscious, wakes and mistakes Zhang for an even more terrifying evil cultivator. He begs for his life and promises not to report what happened.
- Zhang tries to reassure him, but Chen remains too frightened to listen. Zhang adopts a cold, threatening tone to make him answer questions.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhang Yuan demonstrates cleverness and composure, testing his connection with Xiao Yuanjun to change abilities mid-fight. He is pragmatic rather than conventionally heroic: he helped Chen because it was easy, not because he would risk himself. When reassurance fails, he deliberately uses intimidation.
- The Black-Robed Elder is confident in his attack but becomes confused when Zhang survives, then dies before he can understand Zhang’s unexpected abilities.
- Chen Qinkuai reacts to appearances and fear rather than Zhang’s words. He sees the blood-red robe and the Elder’s remains and assumes Zhang is an evil immortal master. His terror turns a rescue into an awkward interrogation.
Significant themes
- Hidden power and misjudgment: The Elder cannot account for Zhang’s additional ability, while Chen mistakes his rescuer for a villain.
- Trust and tacit understanding: Zhang’s successful ability switch shows a reliable, indirect connection with Xiao Yuanjun.
- Power versus mastery: Possessing a divine ability does not mean Zhang can wield it at its full potential; understanding and cultivation matter.
- Appearance, morality, and survival: Zhang’s frightening appearance and calculated threats obscure his more ordinary motives, while his compassion remains limited by self-preservation.
